In recent years, online social networks and online news venues have become some of the main news and event-related information spreading mediums. Although using these mediums has facilitated the speed of accessing information, it also created a new phenomenon used for propaganda and disinformation: fake news. As fake news has detrimental consequences to society, new technologies need to be developed in order to stop their harmful effects. In this paper, we propose two Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) architectures with sentence transformers to solve two tasks: (1) a multi-class mono-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., mono-lingual task);and (2) a multi-class cross-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., cross-lingual task). For the mono-lingual task, we train and test a BiLSTM with BART sentence transformers model on an English dataset and obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.53 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.32. For the cross-lingual task, we train a BiLSTM with XLM sentence transformers model on an English dataset and test the model using transfer learning on a German dataset. For this task, we obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.28 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.19. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Quality assessment of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals holds significant importance in reducing the high-frequency false alarms in automated arrhythmia diagnosis. Existing quality assessment methods primarily rely on empirical threshold setting or the calculation of relevant statistical values to formulate decision rules. However, the thresholds set in this manner are typically based on experience and knowledge, resulting in decision rules that lack flexibility and struggle to adapt to changes in the dataset. To address this issue, many researchers have turned to deep learning algorithms for ECG signal quality assessment. Nevertheless, most existing deep learning methods usually require large-scale and labeled ECG data for training, whose acquiring is typically challenging. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient method for ECG signal quality assessment. First, we use a contrast learning framework to construct sample pairs through multilevel data augmentation. Second, a densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) is used to improve the model's ability of extracting local features in ECG signals, and a Squeeze-and-Excitation attention module is introduced to make the model pay more attention to critical features. Finally, the feature representation is learned by minimizing the contextual contrast loss to bring similar samples closer and push dissimilar samples farther away. In this way, we can utilize the contrastive learning framework to extract temporal representations from unlabeled data and transfer them to downstream ECG signal quality assessment tasks. Extensive experiments on the Physionet/CinC Challenge 2011 dataset demonstrate that our approach outperforms most existing quality assessment methods.

Inspired by human proteins that are synthesized from only 20 types of amino acids, the development of self-assembly methods that allow robots to be built simply by randomly stirring the parts has been explored for many years. The key challenges include how to synthesize parts in pieces into a three-dimensional functional structure in a practical time, and subsequently, achieve a controlled robotic motion, all with minimal human intervention. This study proposes a method of self-assembling a 3D robot by first self-assembling random parts into a 2D structure and then self-folding it into a 3D shape. Once self-folded, the robot, whose compositional parts contain magnets, becomes capable of performing basic tasks such as block-pushing upon an application of an external magnetic field. Self-assembly from parts into a two-dimensional structure was performed by repeatedly colliding the parts with each other, and combining them with complementary-shaped parts, like matching jigsaw puzzle pieces. Self-folding was performed by shrinking a heat-responsive film attached across the hinge of each assembly part in hot water, causing the entire 2D structure to self-fold. The experiment demonstrated a series of 13 parts self-assembling into the shape of a 3D beetle, then walking and pushing an object in 13 minutes. The self-assembly process is programmed (mechanically) to generate the same geometry even if the number of parts is greater than the necessary number for the structure, thus is capable of generating multiple structures simultaneously.

In the medical system, it is crucial to hold patient past health records to give the correct treatment to the patient and ensure the medical practitioner's physical health safety. The 'PatiCare' patient healthcare monitoring system is a promising alternative to the conventional method of checking the human body and checking the patient health record. Despite the ongoing investigation, an outbreak of a pan-demic disease called COVID-19 it creates a situation involving exposure to a danger to medical practitioners. In this paper, we implement a Patient Care Monitoring system called PatiCare to reduce viral diseases affection risk. We use IoT and WEB service for communication with users or patients and take his past health record and a doctor can check remotely to his patient. Our implemented prototype gathers biomedical and orientation information through sensors and re-serves it in a WEB Server. A doctor or a medical practitioner is able to assign medicine remotely and monitor patient instant health. © 2021 IEEE.

Handwritten signatures hold paramount importance in legal, financial, and administrative domains, necessitating the development of robust signature recognition tools for forensic applications. This paper introduces a handwritten signature recognition (HSR) model employing Parallel Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) tailored for forensic endeavors. Utilizing the parallel processing capabilities of CNN, our proposed approach adeptly analyzes and extracts discriminative features from handwritten signature images to facilitate precise recognition. In addition, we leverage several transfer learning techniques by parallelizing proven pre-trained CNNs. Extensive experimentation validates the efficacy of our approach on a standard dataset, demonstrating high accuracy and resilience in signature recognition tasks. The proposed approach exhibits substantial promise in augmenting forensic investigations by automating signature verification processes, thereby bolstering fraud detection efforts and upholding the integrity of legal documentation.

automatic or semi-automatic recognition of selected emotions using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms requires practical, fast and accurate implementation of the steps involved in acquiring the actual signals (e.g. speech, facial expression, posture and body movements), recording them in the form of an optimal feature vector/matrix, correctly interpreting the above data and reproducing and generalising this process within the ML system. Depending on the accuracy and speed required and the degree of its ‘invasiveness’ (e.g. by attaching sensors to the user’s body), single or multi-modal interpretations of biometric signals associated with different groups of emotions are possible. This group of studies, despite their relative non-invasiveness, requires the caution prescribed by the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act and RODO Act and the possibility of being replaced (if necessary) by alternatives. This article aims to analyse the opportunities and risks associated with this group of technologies, with a particular focus on directions for further development.

This study proposes methods that can be used to examine and interpret comments that users have made after watching videos on YouTube on a particular topic. YouTube tutorials are very popular among young people. They have become an important pillar in informal education, thus contributing to the rapid acquisition of skills and knowledge. Under these circumstances, we were interested in analysing the YouTube videos comments, knowing that the platform has a continuous increase in popularity, which is also due to the opportunities of sharing them. Since ChatGPT-themed YouTube videos have seen a significant surge in popularity since 2022, we were interested to analyse some videos that approach the topics of “ChatGPT, AI clone, AI robot and Deep Learning.”

We can obtain valuable information about the human brain using functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). This paper describes the theoretical basis associated with this neuroimaging method through a custom-made prototype of a single-channel fNIRS device. The optodes were soldered to a milled Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and enclosed in a 3D printed housing. Using this fNIRS device, we performed a preliminary study to measure emotional responses from participants. Our results suggest that fNIRS allows for accurate measurement of emotions evoked by positive and negative images.

Automated visual inspection of on- and off-shorewind turbines using aerial robots provides several benefits, namely, a safe working environment by circumventing the need for workers to be suspended high above the ground, reduced inspection time, preventive maintenance, and access to hard-to-reach areas. A novel nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework alongside a global wind turbine path planner is proposed to achieve distance-optimal coverage for wind turbine inspection. Unlike traditional MPC formulations, visual tracking NMPC (VT-NMPC) is designed to track an inspection surface, instead of a position and heading trajectory, thereby circumventing the need to provide an accurate predefined trajectory for the drone. An additional capability of the proposed VT-NMPC method is that by incorporating inspection requirements as visual tracking costs to minimize, it naturally achieves the inspection task successfully while respecting the physical constraints of the drone. Multiple simulation runs and real-world tests demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed automated inspection framework, which outperforms the traditional MPC designs, by providing full coverage of the target wind turbine blades as well as its robustness to changing wind conditions. The convergence of edge computing systems with Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology has shown considerable promise in enhancing real-time applications across various domains. This paper presents an innovative edge computing system design specifically tailored for pavement defect detection within the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADASs) domain. The system seamlessly integrates the AMD Xilinx AI platform into a customized circuit configuration, capitalizing on its capabilities. Utilizing cameras as input sensors to capture road scenes, the system employs a Deep Learning Processing Unit (DPU) to execute the YOLOv3 model, enabling the identification of three distinct types of pavement defects with high accuracy and efficiency. Following defect detection, the system efficiently transmits detailed information about the type and location of detected defects via the controller Area Network (CAN) interface. This integration of FPGA-based edge computing not only enhances the speed and accuracy of defect detection, but also facilitates real-time communication between the vehicle’s onboard controller and external systems. Moreover, the successful integration of the proposed system transforms ADAS into a sophisticated edge computing device, empowering the vehicle’s onboard controller to make informed decisions in real time. These decisions are aimed at enhancing the overall driving experience by improving safety and performance metrics. The synergy between edge computing and FPGA technology not only advances ADAS capabilities, but also paves the way for future innovations in automotive safety and assistance systems. © 2024 by the authors.
