This paper presents the performance analysis and the most significant design decisions taken to improve the runtime performance of a quality-diversity volume rendering framework, focusing on using parallel and distributed computing to optimize specific stages within the framework pipeline. After considering the benefits and trade-offs of several aspects like minimization of execution time, portability and hardware independence, we developed a hybrid CPU-GPU parallel computing model that increased the overall efficiency. Using this model, we achieved significant improvement in runtime speed for critical components of the framework compared to the sequential implementation. Additionally, this model can be applied in a wide range of scenarios, where the performance improvements provided by GPU processing can be complemented by CPU parallelization, with better runtime results.

This paper presents an algorithmic approach for segmenting news broadcasts produced by television stations. The proposed approach uses advanced signal processing techniques to extract and classify audio segments from Romanian TV news broadcasts. By using derivative of 1-dimensional Gaussian filter and binary classification models, this paper aims to automatically identify and classify news segments into categories such as studio news, field news, commercials and music breaks. The primary objective of this paper is to develop a segmentation methodology optimized for reduced computational memory and quick processing. By leveraging efficient computational techniques, the news segmentation can be performed in a timely manner without compromising accuracy. This optimization is crucial for real-time or near-real-time applications within TV networks, facilitating tasks such as content monitoring and analysis.

This paper presents a RISC-V extension, called RiscDaqExt designed for Digital Acquisition and control over 32 individually managed digital channels. Each channel can be configured as input or output, inputs can be negated or filtered before being recorded using specific masks and output channels source can be chosen between values given with a mask, result of a multi-signal operation on specified inputs or a PWM signal generated by the SigWavy extension. The extension is also capable of measuring PWMs frequencies and duty cycles. The extension is controlled using a dedicated ISA extension containing instructions for setting/getting configuration/values and for controlling the storing records of 32 signals values with 32-bit timestamps to an attached DDR3 memory or directly to hosting PC’s RAM via Ethernet. The proposed solution, embedded into the RISC-V CPU named RiscDaq manages to initiate an Ethernet transmission of digital records 9.78x times faster than a MicroBlaze microcontroller, although our SoC operates with a 4x lower frequency, and outputs the result of logical operation performed over maximum 31 digital channels, with a constant 20 ns propagation delay, 49.2x times faster than a Cortex-M7 clocked at a 6x times higher frequency.

Modern urban development depends on optimizing cognitive sensor communications in smart cities, which is the focus of this investigation. In the era of expanding sensor networks, efficient data transmission is paramount for the success of smart city initiatives. The current state of sensor communication faces challenges like suboptimal adaptability, inefficient energy usage, and limited fault detection. This study proposes a solution through the application of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), identifying these challenges as opportunities for improvement. The novelty lies in ANFIS's introduction as an intelligent and adaptive solution. Its ability to learn from sensor data, adapt to changing conditions, and optimize communication parameters sets it apart in enhancing cognitive sensor communication. The research methodology involves a systematic approach, encompassing data collection, pre-processing, and ANFIS model development. The model is rigorously trained, validated, and tested for real-world effectiveness. Integration into the smart city communication system is explored, emphasizing applications in context-aware communication, energy-efficient protocols, and fault detection. Performance is evaluated using metrics like accuracy, reliability, and efficiency, demonstrating the model's efficacy in addressing drawbacks and enhancing overall sensor communication in smart cities. The findings contribute to advancing intelligent systems for urban infrastructure and services. © 2024 IEEE.

"Artificial lung" is a device that simulates breathing process of occupants in a room. This allows you to safely test, e.g., the impact of HVAC systems on the spread of pathogens. The paper describes the concept of the device, its construction and performed tests. The project was implemented by students of two faculties: automatic control, Electronics and computer Science, and Energy and Environmental engineering. The inherent uncertainties in the dynamic and kinematic parameters of robot manipulators pose significant challenges for their control in task space. This paper introduces an innovative adaptive sliding mode control strategy, leveraging self-trained generalized neural networks to enhance the precision and robustness of robot manipulator control. The proposed framework called STGNN integrates deep neural networks for the real-time estimation and adjustment of dynamics’ and kinematics’ parameters. Key contributions of this work include the development of semi-supervised learning models for adaptive dynamics and kinematics estimation. By training the generalized neural network on different trajectories, the same models can be utilized to operate on a variety of tasks, significantly improving the robustness, scalability, and adaptability of the control system. The STGNN approach allows the models to leverage both labeled and unlabeled data, incorporating a self-training mechanism that enhances their ability to generalize and adapt to diverse operational scenarios. This capability is particularly beneficial for real-time applications, where the ability to learn and adapt on the fly is crucial. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the STGNN framework in controlling robot manipulators in operational space, showcasing its potential for real-world applications. The proposed method significantly advances the adaptability, accuracy, and efficiency of robot control systems, offering notable improvements over conventional approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

The AC-DC Energy Nodes (ADENs) concept offers a transformative approach to modernizing power grids, particularly in the context of supergrids. In recent years, the hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has attracted great attention in the field of earth observation. With the expansion of application scenarios and the continuous improvement of application requirements, new classes of HSI continue to emerge. In the face of open and dynamic application scenarios, the model is required to be able to continuously learn new categories based on maintaining existing category knowledge. Class incremental learning algorithms have received extensive attention as key solutions to the problem above. In this paper, we use a regularization-based incremental learning algorithm, elastic weight consolidation (EWC) for class incremental learning for HSI classification. After data preprocessing to reduce data dimensions, we select new classes for research on class incremental learning. We combine 3D-2D convolutional structures and residual blocks as the classification network and use real data playback mechanism to improve class recognition accuracy and realize class incremental recognition of HSI data. We demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm with extensive experiments based on three widely used hyperspectral datasets. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Pneumonia is one of the top causes of death in Romania and early detection of this disease improves the recovery chances and shortens the length of hospitalization. In this work, we develop a solution for automatic pneumonia detection based on convolutional neural networks. Four network models are investigated. They are trained on 4.163 images from a public dataset and tested on 530 images. The best results are obtained by one of the proposed models conducting to a sensitivity of 98.72%, an accuracy of 89.81%, and ROC 93.46%. Thus, this research proposes a lightweight screening tool that can help triaging the patients with pneumonia.

The inherent black-box nature of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) poses challenges in ensuring safety constraints. This paper, therefore, introduces a DRL reward design inspired by Lyapunov stability theory for safe robot navigation in the presence of obstacles. The navigation problem is formulated as a state-space control problem with close obstacle locations integrated into the state representation. To ensure safe obstacle avoidance, we introduce a novel reward-shaping strategy utilizing a Lyapunov function that discourages fast movement toward obstacles. Our numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the reward design strategy compared to baselines in achieving consistent superior learning with higher mission completion rates while maintaining speeds closer to a desired target speed. In addition, we show that our reward design enables a generally smaller choice for the discount factor for value-function-based DRL algorithms, which can lead to faster convergence. This is possible since the reward design merely penalizes the one-step decay of the Lyapunov function. Furthermore, policy training simulations employ an early episode termination method to constrain exploration and add more valuable samples to the DRL training replay memory. Finally, real-world experiments with a quadrotor validate the ability of our method to safely navigate around varying densities of obstacles. The proposed method consistently takes cautious maneuvers near obstacles by slowing down, achieving greater obstacle clearance compared to baseline, although with an increase in mission completion time.
