The transition of healthcare towards digitalization is closely related to the advancement of health-related technologies, including wearable sensors and edge computing. In this paper, we present VersaSens, a versatile and customizable platform concept and its real implementation as a tool to boost research in wearable sensors. The platform embodies the core attributes of the VersaSens concept: versatility, flexibility, and extendability across multiple aspects of hardware, software, and processing components. It features a modular design, consisting of sensor, processor, and co-processor modules, allowing for various configurations. To evaluate the efficiency of the platform, we tested three use cases: cough monitoring, heartbeat classification and epileptic seizure detection. In all cases, the results indicate that the platform effectively executes the applications, achieving low energy consumption. In particular, our findings indicates that the integration of a domain-specific edge-AI co-processor [i.e., HEEP ocrates (Machetti et al., 2024)] equipped with several hardware accelerators further improved the overall execution time and energy consumption of the system. These results demonstrate the potential of VersaSens to effectively support a diverse range of edge-AI applications and configurations, thereby providing a robust foundation for the research and development of novel smart wearable sensor systems.

Traditional cryptographic frameworks are seriously threatened by the quick development of quantum computing, especially those that depend on public-key cryptosystems like RSA and ECC. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) seeks to create cryptographic methods that are impervious to quantum computer assaults in order to overcome this difficulty. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which has selected and standardised quantum-resistant techniques like CRYSTALS-Kyber for key encapsulation and CRYSTALS-Dilithium for digital signatures, has sparked recent advancements in PQC. At the same time, the need for reliable PQC solutions has increased due to developments in quantum computing, such as IBM's improvements in qubit stability and Google's 'quantum supremacy' assertion. In order to protect data security in the post-quantum age, PQC regulations must be adopted globally, as highlighted by the intersection of these fields. Current developments in PQC standardisation and the changing state of quantum computing technology are highlighted in this paper. © 2025 IEEE.

Data centers, cloud and edge computing platforms are absorbing heavy AI-based workloads. This raises two concerns: how to reduce the networking overhead by host processors in order to focus only on AI-processing, and how to provide quantum resilient level protection for any connection running such workloads. In this paper, we will show case the concept of zero-tax data center, which is achieved through offloading of networking functions from the host to the network. In particular, the implementation of postquantum cryptography algorithms providing quantum resilient links and how the processing its complex processing is moved from host to network through the utilization of data-processing units.

Tower solar thermal power generation is a new type of low-carbon and environmentally friendly clean energy technology. In this paper, a single-objective optimization model is established with the maximum annual average thermal output per unit mirror area of the heliostat field as the objective function. By optimizing the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate, the annual average output thermal power can be maximized while meeting the rated power. The heliostat field is distributed in a circular shape. As the seasons change, the light intensity received by the heliostat field is uneven, so the optical efficiency of the heliostats is also different. We simplify the heliostat field into S area (area with higher optical efficiency) and W area (area with lower optical efficiency) based on the optical efficiency distribution of heliostats. At different locations, According to the heliostat width, heliostat height and heliostat coordinate generated by random functions, substituting these parameters into the efficiency model in this paper, and the random search algorithm is used to traverse the maximum annual output thermal power and the corresponding heliostat parameters. In the shadow occlusion loss model, we have grid to set up the heliostat and use the coordinate conversion to solve the shadow occlusion loss efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a passive methodology for detecting a class of stealthy intermittent integrity attacks in cyberphysical systems subject to process disturbances and measurement noise.A stealthy intermittent integrity attack strategy is first proposed by modifying a zero-dynamics attack *** stealthiness of the generated attacks is rigorously investigated under the condition that the adversary does not know precisely the system state *** order to help detect such attacks,a backward-in-time detection residual is proposed based on an equivalent quantity of the system state change,due to the attack,at a time prior to the attack occurrence time.A key characteristic of this residual is that its magnitude increases every time a new attack *** estimate this unknown residual,an optimal fixed-point smoother is proposed by minimizing a piece-wise linear quadratic cost function with a set of specifically designed weighting *** smoother design guarantees robustness with respect to process disturbances and measurement noise,and is also able to maintain sensitivity as time progresses to intermittent integrity attack by resetting the covariance matrix based on the weighting *** adaptive threshold is designed based on the estimated backward-in-time residual,and the attack detectability analysis is rigorously investigated to characterize quantitatively the class of attacks that can be detected by the proposed ***,a simulation example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed methodology.

In order to fully harness the potential of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) in soft robots, advanced control methods are needed. An important groundwork for this is the development of a control-oriented model that can adequately describe the underlying dynamics of a DEA. A common feature of existing models is that always custom-made DEAs were investigated. This makes the modelling process easier, as all specifications and the structure of the actuator are well known. In the case of a commercial actuator, however, only the information from the manufacturer is available and must be checked or completed during the modelling process. The aim of this paper is to explore how a commercial stacked silicone-based DEA can be modelled and how complex the model should be to properly replicate the features of the actuator. The static description has demonstrated the suitability of Hooke's law. In the case of dynamic description, it is shown that no viscoelastic model is needed for control-oriented modelling. However, if all features of the DEA are considered, the generalized Kelvin-Maxwell model with three Maxwell elements shows good results, stability and computational efficiency. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

This paper presents a new hybrid Quantum Machine Learning (QML) model composed of three elements: a classical computer in charge of the data preparation and interpretation;a Gate-based Quantum computer running the Variational Quantum Algorithm (VQA) representing the Quantum Neural Network (QNN);and an adiabatic Quantum computer where the optimization function is executed to find the best parameters for the VQA. As of the moment of this writing, the majority of QNNs are being trained using gradient-based classical optimizers having to deal with the barren-plateau effect [5]. Some gradient-free classical approaches such as Evolutionary Algorithms have also been proposed to overcome this effect [4]. However, to the knowledge of the authors, adiabatic quantum models have not been used to train VQAs. The paper compares the results of gradient-based classical algorithms against adiabatic optimizers showing the feasibility of integration for gate-based and adiabatic quantum computing models, opening the door to modern hybrid QML approaches for High Performance Computing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

In response to growing energy demands and concerns about climate change, microgrid clusters (MGCs) are gaining widespread attention. Their ability to integrate technologies for energy consumption, generation, and storage in AC, DC or a compound of both offer a high degree of flexibility and resiliency. This research introduces a new control strategy for an MGC composed of two MGs interconnected to a local grid via a point of common coupling. The first one is a DC MG comprising an ultracapacitor (UC), wind turbine (WT), DC loads and hydrogen system. The second is an AC MG with a battery bank, AC loads and photovoltaic (PV) generator. The control strategy employs local controllers for each device and distributed control via two control agents, coordinating the power distribution among the energy storage systems (ESSs) of the MGC. This system is tested and validated on a real-time experimental setup, using two Raspberry Pi microcontrollers and an OPAL-RT unit, under different working conditions. The results obtained in this work show that the control strategy implemented in the MGC works correctly.

Resilient source seeking with robot swarms

We present a solution for locating the source, or maximum, of an unknown scalar field using a swarm of mobile robots. Unlike relying on the traditional gradient information, the swarm determines an ascending direction to approach the source with arbitrary precision. The ascending direction is calculated from field strength measurements at the robot locations and their relative positions concerning the swarm centroid. Rather than focusing on individual robots, we focus the analysis on the density of robots per unit area to guarantee a more resilient swarm, i.e., the functionality remains even if individuals go missing or are misplaced during the mission. We reinforce the algorithm’s robustness by providing sufficient conditions for the swarm shape so that the ascending direction is almost parallel to the gradient. The swarm can respond to an unexpected environment by morphing its shape and exploiting the existence of multiple ascending directions. Finally, we validate our approach numerically with hundreds of robots. The fact that a large number of robots with a generic formation always calculate an ascending direction compensates for the potential loss of individuals. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
