Intertidal mudflats are among the most productive coastal ecosystems, largely because of the activity of the photosynthetic microbial community on the sediment surface, known as microphytobenthos (MPB). While the dynamics of MPB have been extensively studied in temperate estuaries, there is limited research in tropical estuaries. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of MPB in the Nicoya Gulf (Costa Rica), one of the world's most productive tropical estuaries, using Sentinel-2 images at 10 m spatial resolution from 2018 to 2022. We used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values ranging from 0 to 0.4 to monitor MPB cover and growth rates (µNDVI, days-1). Analysis of data using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) showed that up to 62% of the temporal variability in average MPB NDVI, peaking in late wet and early dry seasons (November-December), can be explained by years and months. The high temperatures and irradiance during the dry season (December to April) in the Nicoya estuary may inhibit MPB growth, contrasting with patterns observed in temperate estuaries. We observed higher MPB NDVI in the upper intertidal zone (mean sea level > 0.5 m) as usually occurs in temperate estuaries. This research highlights the importance of high-resolution satellite imagery for long-term monitoring of MPB dynamics in tropical tidal flats, crucial for accurate evaluation of global carbon cycling and ecosystem services. © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy approach for texture-based segmentation, where both the obtained regions and the texture features are fuzzy. This way, we have considered the imprecision related to the texture concept, as well as the imprecision associated with the boundaries between regions in the images. With regard to the texture descriptors, we propose to define them on the basis of the perceptual properties of texture. Since these properties are imprecise by nature, they are modelled by means of fuzzy sets defined on the domain of some of the most representative measures of each property. With regard to the segmentation technique, a fuzzy path-based segmentation is proposed. In this approach, fuzzy connectivity is used to measure the relationship between any pair of pixels. Thus, given a set of seed points, fuzzy regions are obtained on the basis of the connectivity between each seed point and the rest of pixels in the image. Finally, this proposal is applied to obtain fuzzy segmentations from real images.

Distributed formation control for manipulator end-effectors

We present three classes of distributed formation controllers for achieving and maintaining the 2D/3D formation shape of manipulator end-effectors to cope with different scenarios due to availability of modeling parameters. We firstly present a distributed formation controller for manipulators whose system parameters are perfectly known. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors and by adding damping terms at joints, which provides a clear physical interpretation of the proposed solution. Subsequently, we extend it to the case where manipulator kinematic and system parameters are not exactly known. An extra integrator and an adaptive estimator are introduced for gravitational compensation and stabilization, respectively. Simulation results with planar manipulators and with seven degree-of-freedom humanoid manipulator arms are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. This paper addresses the problem of end-effector formation control for manipulators that are subjected to external disturbances: input disturbance torques and disturbance forces at each end-effector. The disturbances are assumed to be non-vanishing and are superposition of finite number of sinusoidal and step signals. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors, by adding damping terms at joints, and by incorporating internal model-based dynamic compensators to counteract the effect of the disturbances;all of which presents a clear physical interpretation of the proposed approach. Comparative studies across species, such as primates in this work, reveal the shared structural or functional patterns that might be inherited from the common ancestors and the specific ones that might be related to individualized evolution strategies. Both the shared or specific patterns could help promote the understanding of mechanisms of brain structural and functional architectures and brain dynamics. Many previous studies can be found to report the comparative results on species pairs. However, very few studies were found to perform a comparison of large-scale connectomes across multiple species via a data-driven method. To this end, we construct brain connectomes for three primates, macaque, chimpanzee and human, by using Brodmann areas as graphic nodes and diffusion MRI derived white matter fibers to define edges and edge weights. On these connectomes, a novel dirty multi-task regression method is developed in the attempt to automatically identified the species-shared and -specific connections. The concordance of the findings via our method and previous reports demonstrate the effectiveness and the promise of this framework. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The accurate prediction of offshore wind speed is crucial for effective wind energy management. Deep learning models, utilizing large-scale wind speed time series, have emerged as a prominent approach for this task. However, the availability of wind history and other oceanic data are often capriciously incomplete, with intermittent gaps in the time series due to transmission difficulties or measurement device malfunctions. This presents a significant challenge for both data preparation and model training. In this paper, a self-supervised model, WindFix, is proposed for versatile imputation of offshore wind time series using meteorological features from both the self-spot and neighboring spots. The numerical results validated on wind dataset from Pacific Ocean show that the model can serve for various missing types with a mean squared error around 0.002 for the simplest continue-missing case. The comprehensive analysis also provided deep explanations on the different patterns occurring in various imputation types, attributing to the allocation of attention weights on features. © 2023, The Authors. Ground Control Stations (GCS) are essential tools to monitor and command real-world complex missions involving Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). As the number and types of UVs in the mission grows, implementing a robust and adaptable GCS, capable of simplifying and reducing operator' interactions and mental workloads, becomes an engineering challenge. To address it, this paper presents a new Adaptive-Real-Time (ART)-GCS that 1) allows to monitor and control a runtime changing number of heterogeneous UVs, 2) adapt its GUI to the mission requirements and operators workload to minimize their fatigue and stress, and 3) provide support to experiments with actual and simulated UVs. To show its benefits in real-world missions, this paper presents a field experiment where, for safety reasons, a simulated unmanned aerial vehicle has to find an oil-spill that must be enclosed by a containment boom dragged by two real unmanned surface vehicles.

The technological improvements of recent years made possible to give a boost to immersive technologies such as virtual or augmented reality. This impulse has lowered costs, making it possible for anyone to create content in 360 degrees. In education, this allows the student to be easily placed in contexts where otherwise a large number of resources would be needed. There are currently many applications for the creation of interactive activities, but few totally free and even less with the ability to integrate into different Learning Management Systems. It is difficult for teachers to implement interactive learning experiences and even more so to obtain detailed feedback from students. This article details the creation of an interactive learning and assessment activity, combining text, interactive videos and 360-degree scenes, capable of providing information on student interaction through an xAPI. This information will be collected in a Learning Record Store that can be taken as a data source by Learning and Content Management Systems, opening the opportunity to apply learning analytics techniques. As an example, we used a tool for creating a serious game that serves to prepare a laboratory practice of the subject Local Networks, providing a fast, intuitive and useful way to apply the methodology Flip-Game Engineering and Technology (Flip-GET) developed by researchers of the University of Cadiz. © 2019 IEEE.

The control of polymer waste recycling process is an important modern problem. A partial solution to the problem can be got by using coextrusion technology. As a result of its application with respect to polymer waste, we can get a multilayer qualitative product, containing waste and safe for usage. Because of economic causes, the problem of using this technology is the correct preparation of secondary coextrusion composition based on the requirements to the quality of the obtained product. The scientific paper presents the mathematical control model of secondary polymer composition preparation. The developed model allows carrying out an operational control of composition components consumption, determining and correcting the consumption of the most expensive astringent component in order to guarantee the required quality of the product. The mathematical model is the basis for construction of intellectual automated systems for controlling polymer waste recycling process by coextrusion technology. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
