The aim of this research is to develop a specialized system for collecting and storing CNC machines data considering the possibilities of innovative technologies of OPC UA protocol, in this work an OPC UA information model was proposed and realized in OPC UA server which reflects the logical structure of a CNC machine. This research will present a collecting data method from the digital shadow of CNC system where a complete set of parameters hierarchically structured and transmit the whole set of these parameters through the OPC UA server to production data collection cloud for performing subsequent analyzing, forecasting the state of technological equipment and performing simulation procedures.

The process of developing a PLC program for controlling the electromechanical units of modern machine tools with computer numerical control (CNC) has been formalized. The architecture of a two-computer CNC system with an integrated SoftPLC is given and the specifics of using the touch operator panel and virtual machine panel are considered. A set of libraries developed in the FBD (Functional Block Diagram) language for controlling the electrical automation units of a turning machine is proposed. An example of controlling the electric automation of a training lathe via the high-speed EtherCAT field bus using relatively inexpensive third-party solutions for servo drives and I/O modules that provide the required accuracy and speed is given.

There is a justified need for a cross-platform implementation of an OPC UA server for a CNC system. The available open-source libraries that implement the OPC UA stack have been analyzed, and a solution based on open62541 has been selected. An architectural model for the interaction between the OPC UA server and the CNC system core has been proposed. In addition to the traditional mechanism for obtaining current data values from the CNC system core, the OPC UA server implements a mechanism for working with historical data and a mechanism for controlling the CNC system by sending commands through a control channel via a callback method. Class diagrams illustrating the implementation of these mechanisms have been provided. An OPC UA client has been developed in C# programming language for testing the cross-platform OPC UA server of the CNC system.

Purpose: Virtual reality (VR) technology invaded various domains including architecture practice and education. Despite its high applications in architecture design education, VR has a high potential to be used in architectural history courses as well. This paper aims to examine the effect of using VR technology on the students’ learning abilities of history of architecture. Design/methodology/approach: The experimental approach was used. Two experiments were designed by creating virtual environments for two selected architectural examples from the Modern architecture course. The participants who were students of Modern architecture class had to complete two questionnaires, one for each example. The first one was based on Bloom’s taxonomy, and the other was prepared to test the participants’ analytical and critical skills. Besides, participants had to fill out satisfaction and ease-of-use survey on a five-step Likert scale. Findings: Participants in the VR condition achieved better grades in knowledge gain compared to those in the traditional conditions. Their analytical and critical thinking skills were improved in the VR conditions. Gender has a significant impact on analytical and critical thinking skills. Participants recorded a high level of satisfaction;however, male students were more satisfied than female students who reported concerns about the weight of the used tools and nausea symptoms. Research limitations/implications: This study informs architecture education and provides insights into the potentials of using advanced technology in architectural history education. Teaching the various history of architecture courses will be improved, shifted toward a more student-centered curriculum, and may acquire more excitement and conscious curiosity.
