Gives a simple and comprehensive review of anti-windup, bumpless and conditioned transfer techniques in the framework of the PID controller. We show that the most suitable anti-windup strategy for usual applications is the conditioning technique, using the notion of the realizable reference. The exception is the case in which the input limitations are too restrictive. In this case, we propose the anti-windup method with a free parameter tuned to obtain a compromise between the incremental algorithm and the conditioning technique. We also introduce the new notion of conditioned transfer, and we it to be a more suitable solution than bumpless transfer. All the discussions are supported by simulations.

Our experiences from continuing education on the field of industrial process control show that the control engineering courses for an industrial staff are much more interesting and more useful when they are practically oriented. That was one of the reasons to build a process laboratory that consists of a pilot chemical plant highly equipped with industrial sensors and actuators, different industrial controllers and monitored by a computercontrol system. A process laboratory serves a number of purposes: development and application, research, training and education. The technological process equipment is fully supplied with industrial control elements so the great number of different real-life experiments can be performed. Modern control equipment assures that a variety of contemporary control techniques and metodologies (feed-forward control, single and multiloop feedback control, advanced control, etc.) can be tested and implemented. The paper describes in detail the configuration of the process laboratory, its control system and the software tools used during the educational process.

The paper presents results of research with the new predictive autopilot structure (PIP+D) with gain scheduling. The autopilot is tested and compared with conventional PID autopilot for a mariner class ship. The autopilot parameters are changed with the speed of the ship using the gain scheduling technique. Results obtained during the research show that the proposed autopilot structure is to be recommended if improved performance is of prime interest, when the velocity of the ship is changing. The analysis is based on the simulation of a mariner class ship as a nonlinear system, with the steering servo system taken as a nonlinear model. Results of the simulation are included.

In order to avoid exhaustive optimizations in the process of the extraction of fuzzy rules from data, we have developed a method for automated generation of fuzzy rules based on the techniques of machine learning. The idea behind it is to approximate fuzzy sets with crisp sets and afterwards to apply inductive learning over crisp sets. Experiments which indicate the properties of the method are presented and guidelines for its optimal usage are given. Finally, the method has been applied to the model of a real process.

It will be shown that the most suitable anti-windup strategy for usual applications is the conditioning technique. Autonomous systems of electric power supply consisted of one common primary source of electric power supply and a set of multiple modular switched-controlled secondary sources of electric power supply (DC-to-DC power converters) are considered. The interconnection of the processes in secondary sources through the common primary source increases the dimension of the switched-control problem and leads to extra nonlinear (bilinear) effects. The problem of the stabilization of the voltage transformed by the multiple modular switched-controlled secondary sources of electric supply is formulated and solved in sliding modes. The robust decoupled linear desired behavior of the stabilization errors of the transformed voltage is guaranteed in local sliding modes. In order not to overload some of the basic DC-to-DC power converters within each multiple modular secondary source of electric power supply the differences between the currents consumed by these basic converters are set to zero in sliding modes.

Utilities are required to provide reliable power to customers. In the design stages, utilities need to plan ahead for anticipated future load growth under different possible scenarios. Their decisions and designs can affect the gain or loss of millions of dollars for their companies as well as customer satisfaction and future economic growth in their territory. This paper proposes and describes the general methodology to use fuzzy logic to fuse the available information for spatial load forecasting. The proposed scheme can provide distribution planners other alternatives to aggregate their information for spatial load forecasting.

In batch pulp cooking the heating steam is used only in some phases of the technological procedure. This causes large variations in steam now-rate and imposes high dynamic load at the steam generation plant. In the paper,a system for smooth steam consumption control is presented. It is based on three multiloop microprocessor-based controllers. The designed control structure is simple enough to be implemented as a stand-alone small-sized control system. Also, it provides a low-cost solution by eliminating the need to measure the steam now-rate on each digester. After the installation a reduction of 70% in steam now-rate variance was measured.

The robust stability and performance of a binary distillation column model is analysed using a minimal state space representation. The uncertainty modelling of the column is resulted in an LFT form with a four element diagonal block structure taking into account the dependence between the steady state gains. Robust analysis of the distillation column dynamics is performed and compared using µ - and l 1 -analysis tools. The magnitude of possible overshoots is determined by l 1 -test for robust performance and the dependence of this magnitude on the dominant time constant (i.e. the purity of the separation) is investigated. Futhermore the effect of the mi certainties in the time constants and the singular values on the robust performance is also analysed using l 1 -test. It has been found that the uncertainty in the time constants affects dominantly the robust performance of the open-loop system, i.e. the magnitude of possible overshoots.
