In this work, a practical event-based framework for multivariable processes is introduced. The developed control algorithm is based on a Generalized Predictive control (GPC) algorithm suitable for MIMO systems. The most important advantage of the proposed control scheme is the adaptability of control actions to process disturbances and process interactions. Moreover, event-based approach allows prioritizing selected control variables, paying more attention to important variables (often related to security or costs) while neglecting non-critical ones. This is possible through adjusting the sensor deadband value, making feasible a tradeoff between control effort and control performance. Using this approach, it is possible to keep less relevant variables within the established limits, focusing the control system attention on those critical for process operation. The analyzed event-based control technique for multivariable systems is tested through a simulation study and considering an industrial stirred tank reactor process. The obtained results show several benefits regarding event-based control application, keeping all properties of event-based approach as well as model predictive control ones.

For traffic maneuvers of multiple vehicles on highways we build an abstract spatial and a concrete dynamic model. In the spatial model we show the safety (collision freedom) of lane-change maneuvers. By linking the spatial and dynamic model via suitable refinements of the spatial atoms to distance measures, the safety carries over to the concrete model.

The Connected Revolution has reached the automotive industry and the Internet penetrates into the modern vehicles. Formerly acquiring data from a vehicle was the tool of Fleet Management Systems handling commercial vehicles. In the recent years connectivity began to appear in the passenger vehicles also. The first features were infotainment and navigation, having low security needs remaining far from the vehicular networks. Then telematics and remote control, such as keyless entry appeared and created a new security threat in the vehicle. The paper shows how the connected feature changes the vehicle and also presents vulnerabilities of each element to show the importance of cautious system security design.

In recent years, robots have started to become more commonplace in our lives, from factory floors to museums, festivals and shows. They have started to change how we work and play. With an increase in the population of the elderly, they have also been started to be used for caregiving services, and hence many countries have been investing in the robot development. The advancements in robotics and wireless communications has led to the emergence of autonomous caregiving robot teams which cooperate to accomplish a set of tasks assigned by human operators. Although wireless communications and devices are flexible and convenient, they are vulnerable to many risks compared to traditional wired networks. Since robots with wireless communication capability transmit all data types, including sensory, coordination, and control, through radio frequencies, they are open to intruders and attackers unless protected and their openness may lead to many security issues such as data theft, passive listening, and service interruption. In this paper, a secure web-based communication framework is proposed to address potential security threats due to wireless communication in robot-robot and human-robot interaction. The proposed framework is simple and practical, and can be used by caregiving robot teams in the exchange of sensory data as well as coordination and control data.

Characteristic modeling and the adaptive control design based on it have attracted increasing attention from the research community due to their many successful practical applications that have been reported. This paper presents a Matlab simulation platform that has been developed to facilitate the study of characteristic model based adaptive control systems. The simulation platform consists of two interweaving components: for a given continuous-time linear time-invariant plant, represented by a transfer function, and a specified sampling period, the simulation platform calculates a discretized model of the plant, and the corresponding characteristic model, and with a specified set of initial conditions of the characteristic model and its coefficients, along with the specified duration of simulation and reference input, the simulation platform will adaptively tune the coefficients of the characteristic model and calculate the outputs of the plant and the characteristic model. All the data needed for the simulation will be entered through a graphic user interface, which also plots the evolution of the outputs of the plant and the characteristic model as well as the evolution of the coefficients of the characteristic model. The simulation results can also be saved for off line plotting and analysis through the graphic user interface.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) when combined with various energy harvesting solutions managing to prolong the overall lifetime of the system and enhanced capabilities of the communication protocols used by modern sensor nodes are efficiently used in are efficiently used in Smart Grid (SG), an evolutionary system for the modernization of existing power grids. However, wireless communication technology brings various types of security threats. In this study, firstly the use of WSNs for SG applications is presented. Second, the security related issues and challenges as well as the security threats are presented. In addition, proposed security mechanisms for WSN-based SG applications are discussed. Finally, an easy- to-implement and simple attack detection framework to prevent attacks directed to sink and gateway nodes with web interfaces is proposed and its efficiency is proved using a case study.
