A new family of windows——convolution windows and their applications

A new family of windows is constructed by convolutions via a few rectangular windows with same time width and is thus referred to as convolution windows. The expressions of the second-order up to the eighth-order convolution windows in both the time and frequency domains are derived. Their applications in high accuracy harmonic analysis of periodic signals are investigated. Comparisons between the proposed windows and some known windows with the same width shows that, when the synchronous deviation of data sampling is slight, the proposed ones have the least effect of spectral leakage. Therefore, the new windows are well suited for high accuracy harmonic analysis and parameter estimation for periodic signals. The error analysis and computer simulations show that the estimation errors, corresponding to frequency, amplitude and phase of every harmonic component of a signal, are proportional to the pth power of the relative frequency deviation in case of the pth-order convolution window is applied to windowing signal of approximately p cycles. By introducing real time adjustment in sampling interval, the proposed algorithm can adaptively trace signal frequency and lead to less sampling synchronous deviation. The proposed approach has the advantages of easy implementation and high measure precision and can be used in harmonic analysis of quasi-periodic signals whose fundamental frequency drifts slowly with time.

We discuss the problem of finding the shortest paths from a fixed origin to all nodes on a network not necessarily acyclic, with each arc length represented as positive fuzzy quantity with finite support. At first, we show that the only existing paper on this problem, Klein's algorithm, in some cases lead to a dominated path in the sense of extension principle and then we introduce a new algorithm for the problem. The proposed algorithm is on the basis of the multiple labeling methods of Hansen and Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm.

CAD tools have become more and more important for integrated circuit (IC) design since a complicated system can be designed into a single chip, called system-on-a-chip (SOC), in which physical design tool is an essential and critical part. We try to consider the via minimization problem as early as possible in physical design. We propose a routing method focusing on minimizing vias while considering mutability and wire-length constraint. That is, in the global routing phase, we minimize the number of bends, which is closely related to the number of vias. Previous work only dealt with very small nets, but our algorithm is general for the nets with any size. Experimental results show that our algorithm can greatly reduce the count of bends for various sizes of nets while meeting the constraints of congestion and wire-length.

Constructing new, complex models is often done by reusing parts of existing models, typically by applying a sequence of segmentation, alignment and composition operations. Segmentation, either manual or automatic, is rarely adequate for this task, since it is applied to each model independently, leaving it to the user to trim the models and determine where to connect them. In this paper we propose a new composition tool. Our tool obtains as input two models, aligned either manually or automatically, and a small set of constraints indicating which portions of the two models should be preserved in the final output. It then automatically negotiates the best location to connect the models, trimming and stitching them as required to produce a seamless result. We offer a method based on the graph theoretic minimal cut as a means of implementing this new tool. We describe a system intended for both expert and novice users, allowing easy and flexible control over the composition result. In addition, we show our method to be well suited for a variety of model processing applications such as model repair, hole filling, and piecewise rigid deformations.

A system is presented for automatic classification of the atmosphere in motion pictures scenes. This classification is based solely on the extraction of approximate illumination information from single frames. By using well defined film grammar rules regarding scene lighting, it generates high level semantic descriptors for frames and scenes. These illumination descriptors could be further combined with other descriptors like motion and sound, to generate a complete automatic semantic analysis system of video media.

We present a method for space-time completion of large space-time "holes" in video sequences of complex dynamic scenes. The missing portions are filled-in by sampling spatio-temporal patches from the available parts of the video, while enforcing global spatio-temporal consistency between all patches in and around the hole. This is obtained by posing the task of video completion and synthesis as a global optimization problem with a well-defined objective function. The consistent completion of static scene parts simultaneously with dynamic behaviors leads to realistic looking video sequences. Space-time video completion is useful for a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to: (i) Sophisticated video removal (of undesired static or dynamic objects) by completing the appropriate static or dynamic background information, (ii) Correction of missing/corrupted video frames in old movies, and (iii) Synthesis of new video frames to add a visual story, modify it, or generate a new one. Some examples of these are shown in the paper.

Silhouettes contain rich information about the shape of objects that can be used for recognition and classification. We present a novel approach that allows us to reliably compute many useful properties of a silhouette. Our approach assigns for every internal point of the silhouette a value reflecting the mean time required for a random walk beginning at the point to hit the boundaries. This function can be computed by solving Poisson's equation, with the silhouette contours providing boundary conditions. We show how this function can be used to reliably extract various shape properties including part structure and rough skeleton, local orientation and aspect ratio of different parts, and convex and concave sections of the boundaries. In addition to this we discuss properties of the solution and show how to efficiently compute this solution using multi-grid algorithms. We demonstrate the utility of the extracted properties by using them for shape classification.

This paper focuses on some robust control ideas applied to congestion control problems in high-performance network systems. Thus, we shall focus on the asymptotic stability of two nonlinear continuous-time fluid approximation models including constant or time-varying delays in their systems' representation. The key idea of our approach is represented by an uncertainty interpretation of the delays, combined with the construction of appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional for performing the stability analysis.
