The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) applications necessitates the demand for efficient IoT middleware platforms, especially Context Management Platforms (CMPs) for accessing real-time contextual information. Current IoT middleware evaluation methods lack accessibility, posing a significant challenge for standardized performance analysis of CMPs. This paper introduces a novel scenario-based context query generation approach for assessing the data retrieval performance of a CMP. The proposed approach enables scene creation using either IoT data or real-world images, employing both data-driven and image-driven scene generation methods. This paper presents the challenges, limitations, and applicability of each approach in scene generation through a qualitative evaluation. The scenes are transformed into scene graphs, enabling inference to identify situations. Both approaches generate queries reflecting dynamic real-world situations, allowing for random query loads to evaluate CMPs fairly. This paper validates the proposed approach using real-world IoT datasets and camera images with a focus on bicycle riding safety use cases. The evaluation provides insights into the contextual completeness of scene graph representations crucial for accurately capturing real-world situations. The proposed approach generates queries of varying complexity, with the only difference being the underlying mechanism of scenario generation, providing a streamlined and user-friendly method for evaluating the data retrieval performance of CMPs. © 2024 IEEE.

Lassa fever is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever with high fatality rate. Precise and prompt diagnosis and successful treatment of this disease is very important in the control and prevention of the spread as unrestricted spread can easily erupt into an epidemic. An insightful decision support system can help make quick and more exact findings on this disease. In this paper, an intelligent model is proposed for predicting Lassa fever is proposed. The Lassa fever dataset was extracted from the clinical records of patients from a known Specialist Teaching Hospital in Southern Nigeria. The relevant feature variables were identified and encoded in a manner appropriate for use in algorithmic analysis. The support vector classifier was used to develop a characterization model for the disease. Assessment and evaluation were based on exactness, accuracy, and affectability. Findings showed that the proposed system could improve and encourage quick decision-making as it utilizes real historical data to effectively characterize Lassa fever spread as well as promote the timely treatment and management of patients. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Twitter (now X) has been gaining popularity with each passing day since its inception in 2006. People have been using Twitter as an instant repository to collect data and gain insight into folks' minds on trending issues. Although Twitter allows access to its data through streaming and rest APIs, extracting the required data is difficult. The data (tweet) returned by Twitter is in json format, having at least 26 fields. Each field is bundled in the dictionary form data structure. tweet metadata such as tweet 'likes' and 'retweets' increase the volume and complexity of a tweet, making data extraction in a cleaner format more difficult. This work aims to develop an effective two-step tweet extractor (Xtractor: an online-offline keyword-based Twitter data extractor). In the first step, Xtractor collects publicly available topical tweets using keywords, hashtags, or their list on the fly, parses all the tweet fields, and filters them to retain potential field contents without additional payload. The second step of the Xtractor evicts partially matching tweets using the regular expression method to acquire the targeted domain-specific tweets. Using the proposed two-step Twitter data extraction method, datasets concerning the people of Pakistan have been collected, which can be leveraged to get insight for decision-making, specially in the context of sentiment analysis. We found this method efficient, capacitive, and productive. © 2024 IEEE.

Personalized Federated Learning (pFL) is among the most popular tasks in distributed deep learning, which compensates for mutual knowledge and enables device-specific model personalization. However, the effectiveness of pFL is severely impeded by challenges on fairness and significant communication overhead, where devices holding essential samples have to devote extensive resources for model training. To address these issues, we introduce the Fair and Communication-Efficient Personalized Federated Learning (FCE-PFL) framework, which harmonizes performance and device fairness while maintaining communication costs. Based on the Dempster-Shafer Theory, FCE-PFL employs assistance and contribution metrics to quantify the auxiliary information a client receives and provides. Then FCE-PFL balances and adjusts the involvement of devices in each training iteration, so as to facilitate fair training by constraining the maximum resource consumption per device and reduce the overall communication overhead. Our framework has been proven to be superior to existing methods in accuracy through rigorous experiments on the CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 datasets, demonstrating its potential as a fair and efficient pFL solution. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Broadcasting is an information dissemination primitive where a message is passed from one node (called originator) to all other nodes in the network. With the increasing interest in interconnection networks, an extensive amount of research was dedicated to broadcasting. Two main research goals of this area are finding inexpensive network structures that maintain efficient broadcasting and finding the broadcast time for well-known and widely used network topologies. In the scope of this paper, we will mainly focus on determining the broadcast time and the optimal broadcasting scheme for graphs. Determination of the broadcast time of a node x in an arbitrary network G is known to be NP-hard. Polynomial time solutions are known only for a few classes of networks. There also exist various heuristic and approximation algorithms for different network topologies. In this paper, we will consider networks that can be represented as k-path graphs. We will present a polynomial time 2-approximation algorithm for the broadcast time problem in k-path graphs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

In IoT systems managing multiple devices simultaneously, errors in system controllers often undermine intended operations. Formal verification offers a method to assess system reliability. Colored Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (CGSPN), a formal language, facilitate correctness checks of such systems. This study proposes a verification approach by translating a C++-based system controller of a self-service machine into a CGSPN models and validating it using the Snoopy Tool. Mapping techniques employed to transform components in the controller into CGSPN models are provided. Results demonstrate the method's efficacy in verifying system safety properties, simulating system events, and enabling quantitative verification. © 2024 IEEE.

The global elderly population is increasing rapidly, leading to a rise in chronic illnesses and co-existing conditions, which in turn results in higher healthcare expenses. Accidental falls are among the leading causes of injury-related deaths in elderly individuals. This study aims to create a real-time monitoring system using vital signs to foresee a future fall in older adults by identifying abnormalities through continuous monitoring. The proposed fall prediction technique, employing the Fuzzy-based Fall Prediction Algorithm, utilizes Fuzzy rules to learn and execute tasks. The obtained results are then classified according to different levels of predicted risk indicators. The developed model is tested using data from older adults sourced from a public repository and compared with the results of the theoretical evaluation. The simulated outcomes demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves 96% accuracy, 93.75% sensitivity, and 100% specificity. Utilizing these advancements in the proposed heterogeneous technology allows for the early prediction of falls in the elderly and can potentially save lives. © 2024 IEEE.

Early and accurate detection of anomalous events on the freeway, such as accidents, can improve emergency response and clearance. However, existing delays and mistakes from manual crash reporting records make it a difficult problem to solve. Current large-scale freeway traffic datasets are not designed for anomaly detection and ignore these challenges. In this paper, we introduce the first large-scale lane-level freeway traffic dataset for anomaly detection. Our dataset consists of a month of weekday radar detection sensor data collected in 4 lanes along an 18-mile stretch of Interstate 24 heading toward Nashville, TN, comprising over 3.7 million sensor measurements. We also collect official crash reports from the Tennessee department of Transportation Traffic Management Center and manually label all other potential anomalies in the dataset. To show the potential for our dataset to be used in future machine learning and traffic research, we benchmark numerous deep learning anomaly detection models on our dataset. We find that unsupervised graph neural network autoencoders are a promising solution for this problem and that ignoring spatial relationships leads to decreased performance. We demonstrate that our methods can reduce reporting delays by over 10 minutes on average while detecting 75% of crashes. The development of the next generation of cellular networks, 5G-Advanced and 6G (5G-A/6G), offers higher speeds, sub-millisecond latency, and providing wider coverage, which are key to meeting the requirements of new and demanding applications. As such, there are several challenges in managing and leveraging this opportunity to ensure that channel conditions do not impact the application due to mobility and obstructions. 5G introduces the use of millimeter wave (mmWave), and the commercial deployment of this technology brings to light the issues related to propagation and mobility in high-frequency bands, and their impact on applications has begun to be studied by exploring the response of the congestion control algorithms (CCAs) in representative scenarios. However, the highly variable channel conditions in mmWave require that they be defined as fluctuating bandwidth scenarios. It is necessary to determine how the transport layer can take advantage of the maximum available capacity and not affect the applications, and whether the network promises are fulfilled. This work aims to design and evaluate a CCA capable of efficiently adapting to the fluctuating bandwidth of extreme condition scenarios of 5G-A/6G mobile networks and to compare it with the state-of-the-art algorithms. As a first result, a set of simulation-based evaluation using 5GLENA was discussed. A combination of CCAs and different radio link control (RLC) buffer sizes allows us to highlight the importance of defining appropriate metrics and including convergence times as part of the evaluation performance of the algorithms. Algorithms such as HighSpeed and New Reno are among the slowest to converge, while BBR is the fastest. The analysis and characterization of the algorithms will allow us to define the requirements for designing an Machine Learning (ML) based algorithm with optimal performance and better convergence times. © 2024 IEEE.
