Consider the two related problems of sensor selection and sensor fusion. In the first, given a set of sensors, one wishes to identify a subset of the sensors, which while small in size, captures the essence of the data gathered by the sensors. In the second, one wishes to construct a fused sensor, which utilizes the data from the sensors (possibly after discarding dependent ones) in order to create a single sensor which is more reliable than each of the individual ones. In this work, we rigorously define the dependence among sensors in terms of joint empirical measures and incremental parsing. We show that these measures adhere to a polymatroid structure, which in turn facilitates the application of efficient algorithms for sensor selection. We suggest both a random and a greedy algorithm for sensor selection. Given an independent set, we then turn to the fusion problem, and suggest a novel variant of the exponential weighting algorithm. In the suggested algorithm, one competes against an augmented set of sensors, which allows it to converge to the best fused sensor in a family of sensors, without having any prior data on the sensors' performance. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a novel one-class classification method to improve the correct proportion by adding new outliers. General speaking, it is difficult to improve the correct proportion of the one-class classification because of few data. How to distinguish the target objects correctly from unknown samples becomes one of the most important problems. The support vector data description (SVDD) is a method proposed to solve the problem of one-class classification. It models a hypersphere around the target set, and by the introduction of kernel functions, more flexible descriptions are obtained. In SVDD, the width parameter and the penalty parameter have to be given beforehand by the user. To automatically optimize the values for these parameters, the error on both the target and outlier data has to be estimated. Because no outlier examples are available, we propose a max-min range method for generating artificial outliers in this paper. By generating artificial outliers around the target set, the accuracy of classifiers will improve. At the last, we use four benchmark data sets: Iris, Wine, Balance-scale, and Ionosphere data base to validate the approach in this research indeed has better classification result. © 2012 IEEE.

Dangerous goods transportation (DGT) is a relevant safety and security issue that has been treated in many papers in the last decades. Considering the significant damages that a DGT accident can cause, a DGT routing strategy is to avoid the worst case accident scenario, following a risk-averse behaviour. Game-theory is very useful in this context. Taking into account a DGT flow on a road network and the technologies for vehicle/infrastructure communication which are nowadays available, the overall context can be modelled as a system of systems, where a team of road segments concurs to find an optimal strategy to minimise the maximum risk on the territory. Two problems related to DGT are presented and preliminary formulations, at operational and at real-time level, are described. A solving method based on linear matrix inequalities is shown and first results are shown. © 2012 IEEE.

Intravenous (IV) therapy has been included as an integral part of nurse's professional practice. Although it is an effective curing technique, it has some complications. Air embolism is one of such complications which may cause death of patients in some cases. In this paper, we have proposed an efficient, economic and reliable air embolism protecting system to save precious lives in case of air bubble insertion. The proposed system monitors the IV tube and when an air bubble even in fraction of millimeter gets introduced into the tube, detects it, indicates emergency and blocks the fluid flow to protect entrance of the air bubble into the human body. The proposed system has been evaluated on various IV solutions;results are very promising as the accuracy is more than or equal to 99% in every case thus supporting the implementation of the solution. Therefore, the system can be used for any type of IV solution. © 2012 IEEE.

Nowadays, one of the most important research lines on smart power grids and microgrids is related to the evaluation of how such active infrastructures can increase energy efficiency, minimize greenhouse gases emissions and contribute to a deeper penetration of renewable energy sources. To investigate this issue, several test-bed facilities/demonstrators have been designed and are now running or under construction all over the world in order to perform experimental research and testing. Among them, it is important to cite the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM) developed by the University of Genoa at Savona Campus facilities. The present paper describes the SPM structure and proposes a general method to estimate its economic and environmental benefits connected with the use of renewable energy sources and cogeneration plants;in particular, the attention is focused on the SPM running costs, the CO2 emissions and the primary energy use. The calculation method is explained in details, referring to the winter configuration of the SPM trigeneration system. © 2012 IEEE.

With the rapid growth of wireless technologies and increasing number of mobile digital devices, mobility has been an important element on the Internet. NEMO Basic Support, designed by the Internet engineering Task Force (IETF) to provide network mobility, is not efficient to offer low latency handoff in the case of nested mobile networks because it produces a long transfer delay and excessively large packet sizes due to non-optimal routes and multiple encapsulations. This paper presents a route optimization scenario for nested mobile network using hierarchical structure with Binding Update Tree (BUT). This scheme should reduce packet overhead, handoff latency, packet transmission delay, and achieve optimal routing. © 2012 IEEE.

Cooperative communications have been recommended to exploit the inherent spatial diversity gains in multiuser wireless systems without the need of multiple transceivers at each node. This is achieved when wireless nodes help to each other to send multiple independent transmission paths to the destination. The advantage of cooperation can be exploited significantly by allocating the power of the system optimally. Thus, in this paper we first derive the approximate symbol error rate (SER) for multi-node cooperative networks employing decode-and-forward (DF) protocol with a maximum ratio combining (MRC) at the receiving terminals in Racian fading channels. Using the approximated SER expression, optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme under different line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios is investigated. Numerical and simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance improvement due to OPA of the cooperative networks.

Some results related to electro-mechanical characterization in frequency and temperature of PVDF piezoelectric films are reported. A rheological model of creep and recovery of the response of these samples following to a step in load or temperature is suggested. This work is intended as the first step for the electro-mechanical design of innovative integrated transduction systems for tactile sensors in robotic applications. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The peer-reviewed articles and textual data are main source of data in biology. Text mining is solution to extract information from textual data sources that are usually in bulky quantities, messy and disorganized. Dealing with this situation needs to deploy innovative methods and techniques. In this paper, we identify the current heavily used methods for biomedical text mining, their capabilities and developments, some proposed solution and how to evaluate performance. Biomedical specific challenges in text mining context have been studied with respect to proposed answers and then main future trends based on current needs and requirements have been discussed.

An innovative way of object shape representation using Density Histogram of Feature Points (DHFP) is introduced and used in this paper. We have named this method Enhanced Density Histogram of Feature Points (EDHFP). We use silhouette images where the image region ξ consists of only those pixels that correspond to points on the object and have a value one (1) indicating "on" pixels. We count the number of "on" pixels in rectangle boundaries around a centroid, in the event that there are no "on" pixels in a rectangle boundary then the value is zero. The similarity level indicator is introduced to form part of vector a representation of the object shape. This method of image representation shows improved retrieval rate when compared to Density Histogram of Feature Points (DHFP) representation method. This method is capable of grouping object shapes with high probability of being similar using the similarity level indicator before calculation of similarity distance. Analytic analysis is done to justify our method, experiments are conducted and we compared our results with the object shape representation by DHFP to prove EDHFP's robustness. © 2012 IEEE.
