Future satellite networks are expected to have thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites orbiting Earth at very high speeds. User equipment (UE) communicating directly with LEO satellites will experience frequent handovers. Managing the handover process is complicated due to the high frequency of handovers and the availability of multiple LEO satellites as handover targets. In addition, as the status of the communication link between a UE and an LEO satellite varies in accordance with the visibility period of the satellite, initiating handovers at the right time will significantly affect the quality of service (QoS) of the communication provided. To address this problem, this work proposes a graph-based customizable handover framework that considers both the handover timing and target while selecting a handover sequence that maintains QoS. A time-based graph is designed where the vertices represent the satellites' instances over a certain period of time and the edges' weights are the customizable handover criteria (i.e., data rate and delay in this work). The appropriate sequence and timing of handovers that fulfill the required QoS are obtained by finding the shortest path in the graph. Discussion and simulations, which were conducted on the Starlink Phase I constellation, show the low complexity and performance advantages of the proposed handover framework. © 2022 IEEE.

We propose a novel Machine Learning (ML) method to jointly learn the filtering, the quantization scheme, and the decoder, for an uplink Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) with limited backhaul capacity. The proposed ML model employs a linear filter at each Remote Radio-Head (RRH), a uniform quantizer with non homogeneous bitwidth for each RRH output, and a decoder at the cloud. We formulate the learning problem aiming at correctly decoding the symbols sent while respecting a bit-budget constraint. We propose a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) architecture and describe mathematically each of its layers. Numerical results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms well known benchmarks, especially for small capacity backhauls.

With the advances of quantum computing the security of existing cryptographic frameworks is increasingly at risk. Accordingly, in the present study, we investigate the integration of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms into Hyperledger Fabric, a blockchain framework, to safeguard it against emerging quantum threats. To this end, a modified Cryptogen tool was developed to generate X.509 certificates with both classical and post-quantum cryptographic keys. Furthermore, using tools like Hyperledger Caliper and Prometheus for empirical analysis, we demonstrate that this hybrid approach effectively strengthens security without affecting system performance. These results not only improve the security of Hyperledger Fabric, but also offer a practical guide for adding post-quantum cryptography to blockchain technologies. © 2019 IEEE.

This article explores the emerging field of in-memory computing, which has the potential to significantly improve energy efficiency in many signal processing and machine learning applications. In-memory computing systems are impacted by various sources of noise and perturbations that can affect their computation accuracy. Therefore, this article aims to identify the key challenges to be addressed from an information-theoretic point of view in this area. It first identifies relevant computation structures and noise models from the literature of hardware implementation, and then reviews existing works in information theory and error-correction for in-memory computing. Finally, it identifies key open avenues for establishing information-theoretic foundations of in-memory computing systems, and for providing insightful design rules leading to highly energy-efficient computing systems. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper introduces an Access Gate Function (AGF) that has been implemented using the P4 language and evaluates its performance when running on a Tofino switch. Through the process of translating specifications from the Broadband Forum (BBF) for Fixed Mobile Convergence in the 5G Core into a P4 code and by conducting data plane simulations on software switch models, we provide evidence that the AGF solution conforms to industry standards and exhibits efficient and scalable performance characteristics. Subsequently, we assess the prototype’s implementation on a Tofino switch, analyzing its capabilities and limitations. The reported results demonstrate that the programmable P4 Tofino switch efficiently handles a significant number of sessions, further reinforcing the potential and practicality of the proposed solution for industrial deployment in fixed-mobile convergence scenarios.

Defragmentation-aware multilayer route and spectrum assignment in elastic optical network

Integrating Optical Transport Networks (OTNs) into multilayer Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) enhances data transmission efficiency but introduces significant challenges in routing and spectrum allocation, particularly when Ethernet connections are encapsulated within OTN payloads. To address these challenges, we develop an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model tailored for dynamic traffic scenarios to optimize Route and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) in multilayer EONs under OTN constraints. Recognizing the scalability limitations of the ILP model, we propose a novel heuristic algorithm based on a Collapsed Auxiliary Graph (CAG) that abstracts the multilayer network into a single layer. We employ a label-setting approach to solve the constrained shortest path problem on the CAG. This method effectively prevents spectrum interference and controlling latency along demand paths. It also enables fine-tuning of CAG edge weights to implement various traffic engineering policies. Simulation results demonstrate that our heuristic effectively reduces the blocking ratio and improves spectrum utilization while balancing network efficiency and minimizing OTN switching usage. Our findings provide valuable insights into the impact of individual layer configurations on overall network performance, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach in optimizing multilayer EONs with OTN integration. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Considered to be Canada's groundbreaking technological achievement in the field of robotics and its greatest contribution to space, Canadarm and Canadarm2 have made their mark on both the Canadian and international scene. As the upcoming Canadarm3 reaches the culmination of its design phase for the Lunar Gateway, an opportunity to review the evolution of this robotic technology over its combined 53 years of service arises. Furthermore, the practical impacts of each Canadarm generation will be explored, regarding the safe and sustainable use of space, the commercialization of the space industry, and technological progress in the medical field, in nuclear power plant robotics and in remote explosives disarming robots. This paper will embark on a comprehensive literature review, complemented by interviews conducted with key contributors to the Canadarms' missions as well as Canadian astronauts. This methodological approach aims to provide an accurate outline of the technical, operational, and collaborative complexities that have underpinned the development and deployment of this technology. By comparing the technical specifications of each Canadarm generation in the context of their respective space program, namely Space Shuttle, ISS and Gateway, technological advancements will be highlighted from an engineering and operations standpoint. The conducted interviews with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and MacDonald Dettwiler And Associates (MDA) will also help illustrate the obstacles faced throughout the implementation of these programs. Foreseeing the next step in Canada's role in space exploration, this study will also examine Canadarm3's upcoming crucial contribution in missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Thermal Analysis of System in Package Considering Boundary Conditions for Long-Term Reliability Studies

This paper proposes an integrated Foster-based thermal network for a System in Package (SiP) that models thermal interaction between package layers to predict the transient temperature of junctions and interlayer compression in SiP. The critical factors contributing to impedance mismatch are detailed to ensure modeling accuracy. Important factors include the boundary conditions and the interface layer of the thermal material. With the help of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and data curve fitting, thermal parameters are derived and expressed as a function of boundary conditions. The proposed modeling method is demonstrated with 3D heterogeneous System in Package models implemented in Simulink for long-term temperature predictions. Predicted junction and interlayer temperatures show good accuracy, confirmed by reported results obtained by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The importance of considering the boundary conditions and the materials used in the various interfaces is shown through simulation results. Neglecting one of these key factors, the predicted temperature differs by as much as 14.5 °C in the reported results. The proposed thermal network is consistent with FEA, while computing much faster and producing results that differ by no more than 0.5 °C, unlike previously reported models. Authors

Delay-Doppler Domain Pulse Design for OTFS-NOMA

We address the challenge of developing an orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS)-based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where each user is modulated using orthogonal pulses in the delay-Doppler domain. Building upon the concept of the sufficient (bi)orthogonality train-pulse [1], we extend this idea by introducing Hermite functions, known for their orthogonality properties. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed Hermite functions outperform the traditional OTFS-NOMA schemes, including power-domain (PDM) NOMA and code-domain (CDM) NOMA, in terms of bit error rate (BER) over a high-mobility channel. The algorithm’s complexity is minimal, primarily involving the demodulation of OTFS. The spectrum efficiency of Hermite-based OTFS-NOMA is K times that of OTFS-CDM-NOMA scheme, where K is the spreading length of the NOMA waveform. © 2024, CC BY.

Background: The correlation between anodization conditions and the ageing effect on TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) surface has been widely studied in different media and conditions (physiological solu-tions, mechanical stresses in water, etc.) for the prediction of their behaviour over a long period of time. In the present study, the synthesized TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) from Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which were left unattended and exposed to environmental conditions (i.e., humidity and ambient temperature) for more than 4 years, were investigated to underline any important alteration/changes and ageing effects, on the surface morphology, the surface composition, and the electrochemical behaviour. The nanotubes were made in 2018 by anodization in different potentials (20V, 40V, 50V, and 60V) for different times (30 min, 60 min, 90 min, 150 min and 180 min) in an Ethylene Glycol solution for other purposes. Methods: For the surface morphology characterisation, electronic microscopy (SEM) was performed to depict any tendency with anodization conditions: potential and time. The comparison study between the obtained results and the SEM pictures taken on similar samples made and characterized under the same conditions in 2018, reveals a noticeable alteration in the morphology and a change in the TNT’s external diameter. Surface composition was checked using energy dispersive spectrometry (EDXS). The EDXS spectra analysis was realised to investigate the storage time impact on structure surface stability. A drastic decrease in the amount of oxygen was noticed on all of the surfaces where wettability measurements by contact angle were performed to confirm the latter. The verification of the hydrophobicity of TNT surfaces attested that all aged samples are hydrophobic in concordance with EDXS analysis and X-ray photoe-lectron spectroscopy (XPS).
