Advanced human activity recognition on wearables with multi-scale sparse attention

Maintaining a regular daily activity routine is essential for overall health and well-being. Wearable sensors offer a convenient way to track daily activities, but accurately identifying a wide range of activities remains a challenge for existing methods. These methods relied heavily on feature selection approaches in CNNs, which were not only tedious but also struggled to accurately identify activities with similar patterns and, also fails to find the long-range dependencies. The introduction of transformers in CNNs addresses these limitations, enabling more efficient and precise recognition of activities even when patterns are similar. In this paper, a novel Human activity recognition model that combines CNN with a Residual Transformer Network (RTN) is proposed. This model incorporates two key improvements: a sparse attention technique applied at multiple scales to capture complex spatial patterns, and an adaptive fusion. Sparse attention allows the model to concentrate on the most critical parts of the spectrogram at different scales and directions. This approach aids the model in distinguishing between activities with similar overall patterns by capturing subtle differences. Additionally, it enhances the model’s ability to recognize long-range dependencies. An adaptive fusion technique is introduced to combine features from CNN and RTN, with a dynamic scoring function optimally weighting each feature stream. This ensures balanced contributions from spatial patterns and temporal dependencies for accurate activity classification. Experiments conducted on the HARTH, HU-HAR, and HuGaDB datasets demonstrate impressive results with higher accuracies of 94.82%, 98.94%, and 96.33%, respectively. Advanced deep learning models based on neutrosophic logic for the analysis of brain tumor medical images

The categorization of medical photographs poses considerable difficulties owing to noise, uncertainty, and ambiguous information. Conventional deep learning models frequently encounter difficulties in addressing this issue, resulting in diminished diagnostic precision, particularly in the context of low-quality or ambiguous situations. This work presents a hybrid methodology that combines Neutrosophic Set (NS) theory with deep learning models to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) picture classification in uncertain settings. NS theory delineates three domains: True (T), Indeterminate (I) and False (F) to address picture uncertainty and noise, hence enhancing deep learning models' capacity to analyze complex, ambiguous visual data. To assess the methodology, four advanced deep learning models MobileNet, VGG16, DenseNet121 and InceptionV3 were employed, and their efficacy was analyzed on brain tumor medical image datasets. The findings demonstrate that models trained on NS-transformed data, especially DenseNet and inception, produce enhanced results relative to those trained on the original data, attaining notably higher accuracy, precision, and recall. This illustrates that integrating NS theory into deep learning models markedly improves their capacity to categorize uncertain and noisy MRI pictures, offering a reliable method for enhancing diagnostic accuracy in medical imaging. © 2025, University of New Mexico. Evolutionary optimization of Yagi–Uda antenna design using grey wolf optimizer

Meta-heuristic optimization algorithms have become widely used due to their outstanding features, such as gradient-free mechanisms, high flexibility, and great potential for avoiding local optimal solutions. This research explored the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) to find the ideal configuration for a six-element Yagi–Uda antenna. The GWO algorithm adjusted the lengths of the antenna wires and the spacings between them. The goal was to maximize the antenna’s ability to transmit signals (throughput gain). Optimal antenna selection relies on various parameters, including gain, bandwidth, impedance matching, frequency, side-lobe levels, etc. The optimization of a six-element Yagi–Uda antenna presents a challenging engineering design problem due to its multimodal and nonlinear nature. Achieving optimal performance hinges on the intricate interplay between the lengths of the constituent elements and the spacing configurations. To this end, a multiobjective function was adopted to design this antenna. The performance of several meta-heuristic algorithms, including genetic algorithms, biogeography-based optimization, simulated annealing, and grey wolf optimizer, was compared. The GWO-based approach has performed better than its competitors. This optimized antenna design based on GWO reported a gain of 14.21 decibel. Therefore, the GWO-based method optimizes antennas that can be further investigated for other antenna design problems. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Optimizing therapy and rehabilitation for Parkinson's disease (PD) requires early identification and precise evaluation of the illness's course. However, there is disagreement about the best way to use gait analysis to categorize the severity of motor symptoms and identify early-stage Parkinson's disease. The precision of machine learning (ML) models in identifying early and intermediate stages of Parkinson's disease was assessed in this study. Six ML models are used in this study for the prediction of PD. Different metrics are used to evaluate ML models such as accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and AUC score. Then we propose a multi-criteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) to evaluate the ML models and select the best one. Two MCDM methods are used such as CRITIC method to compute the criteria weights and the TOPSIS method to rank the alternatives. These methods are used under the bipolar neutrosophic sets (BNSs) to deal with uncertainty information. The results show the support vector machine is the best ML model for the prediction of PD. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

MCI-GAN: a novel GAN with identity blocks inspired by menstrual cycle behavior for missing pixel imputation

This paper presents MCI-GAN, a novel menstrual cycle imputation (MCI) and generative adversarial network (GAN) framework designed to address the challenge of missing pixel imputation in medical images. Inspired by the intelligent behavior of the endometrial lining during the menstrual cycle, our method introduces four key innovations. First, we propose a novel metaheuristic algorithm that assigns weights to surround pixels based on menstrual cycle behavior, ensuring that the imputed pixels maintain structural integrity and coherence with their neighbors, thus preserving overall image quality. Second, to enhance the learning capability of the GAN, identity blocks are integrated into the network architecture, improving the network’s ability to capture complex spatial relationships and leading to more accurate and consistent imputation of missing pixels. Third, we introduce an adaptive loss function that dynamically adjusts the penalty for pixel discrepancies based on local image context, allowing the model to focus on areas where accurate imputation is most critical and thereby enhancing overall image fidelity. Fourth, the framework incorporates a multi-scale feature extraction mechanism, enabling the GAN to process and combine information at various levels of detail, ensuring that both fine-grained textures and larger structural patterns are accurately captured during the imputation process. The efficacy of MCI-GAN is demonstrated across three diverse medical imaging datasets: mammograms, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and skin lesion images. Our results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms existing approaches in terms of accuracy and structural coherence, offering a robust solution for missing pixel imputation in medical imaging. © The Author(s) 2025.

The high mobility of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to their usage in various computer vision applications, notably in intelligent traffic surveillance, where it enhances productivity and simplifies the process. Yet, there are still several challenges that must be resolved to automate these systems. One significant challenge is the accurate extraction of vehicle foregrounds in complex traffic scenarios. As a result, this article proposes a novel vehicle detection and tracking system for autonomous vehicle surveillance, which employs Fuzzy C-mean clustering to segment the aerial images. After segmentation, we employed the YOLOv4 deep learning algorithm, which is efficient in detecting small-sized objects in vehicle detection. Furthermore, an ID assignment and recovery algorithm based on Speed-Up Robust Feature (SURF) is used for multi-vehicle tracking across image frames. Vehicles are determined by counting in each image to estimate the traffic density at different time intervals. Finally, these vehicles were tracked using DeepSORT, which combines the Kalman filter with deep learning to produce accurate results. Furthermore, to understand the traffic flow direction, the path trajectories of each tracked vehicle is projected. Our proposed model demonstrates a noteworthy vehicle detection and tracking rate during experimental validation, attaining precision scores of 0.82 and 0.80 over UAVDT and KIT-AIS datasets for vehicle detection. For vehicle tracking, the precision is 0.87 over the UAVDT dataset and 0.83 for the KIT-AIS dataset. © 2025 Qureshi et al.

Malware detection is one of the critical tasks of cybersecurity, especially considering the growing popularity of mobile devices. The integrity and security of mobile ecosystems rely on the capacity to identify malware quickly and precisely, as security hacks against these devices become increasingly frequent. Due to the requirement for massive volumes of data aggregation, traditional centralized machine learning (ML) techniques for malware detection face challenges with data sharing, computational complexity, and privacy. This research addresses these challenges by proposing a novel model, called "CNN-Fed", which is based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with Federated Learning (Fed). The main goal of this work is to create a global classifier for Android malware detection that is highly accurate and does not require centralised data aggregation. Using four benchmark datasets—Drebin, Malgenome, Kronodroid, and Tuandromd—the CNN-Fed model is trained across many clients in a federated setting under the suggested architecture. Then we use multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology to evaluate the number of clients and number of rounds. We use two MCDM methods such as Entropy methodology to compute the criteria weights and the CoCoSo methodology to rank the alternatives. We use the interval-valued neutrosophic sets (IVNSs) to deal with uncertainty and vague information. We use five criteria such as accuracy, F1-score, precision, recall, and FP and six of alternatives refer to the number of clients and number of rounds. The results show the best alternative has a larger number of clients and rounds. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.
