Ontologies have become the de-facto modeling tool of choice, employed in a variety of applications and prominently in the Semantic Web. Nevertheless, ontology construction remains a daunting task. Ontological bootstrapping, which aims at automatically generating concepts and their relations in a given domain, is a promising technique for ontology construction. Bootstrapping an ontology based on a set of predefined textual sources, such as Web services, must address the problem of multiple concepts that are largely unrelated. This paper exploits the advantage that Web services usually consist of both WSDL and free text descriptors. The WSDL descriptor is evaluated using two methods, namely Term Frequency/Inverse Document Frequency (TF/IDF) and Web context *** propose an ontology bootstrapping process that integrates the results of both methods and validates the concepts using the free text descriptors, thereby offering a more accurate definition of ontologies.
Several semantic based user profile approaches have been introduced in the literature to learn the users' interests for personalized search. However, many of them are ill-suited to cope with a domain of informatio...

To realize the vision of the semantic web it is essential to be able to exchange formal modeled knowledge between applications and humans without loss of meaning. In this paper, we focus on questions relating to meaning, interpretation and subject identity in modern semantic web languages. Based on the semiotic triangle we show that topics as well as RDF resources are symbols, representing concepts and not referents as the common term "subject" would indicate. A subject can not be represented as a single entity, but rather as a complex and evolving system of different concepts. Based on this insight we explain how the resulting plurality and uncertainness of the interpretation of symbols can be handled using semantic mappings. By defining transformation rules, the exchange and integration of knowledge from different semantic models becomes possible. Concluding we define recommendations and design guidelines for a semantic mapping management system, which is needed to support users and applications in creating, reusing, managing and applying such semantic mappings.

In this paper, we present a variety of methods to evaluate a multi-model information retrieval system. The evaluation methods are divided into three steps: (1) evaluating a metadata driven search engine, (2) evaluating a personalized cluster-based semantic search engine, and (3) evaluating a dual representation of the semantic user profile for personalized Web search in an evolving domain. The first part of this paper presents an overview of the most popular information retrieval models and their evaluation methods. The second part is dedicated to the specific evaluation methods that we used to evaluate each model of our platform. This platform is already being used by online students at WKU. As of 2006 the "HyperManyMedia" search engine has been ranked number 24 on "The Ultimate Guide to Using Open Courseware 1" (between Cambridge University and Harvard Business).
