Understanding the behavior of a structure and its components in the preliminary design phase is important since decisions made at this time can have a significant influence on the quality of the final design. It can also potentially reduce the number of alternative solutions and avoid costly design revisions. However, there are few tools available for modeling of a structure and performing qualitative analysis and interpretation of a conceptual design. We describe a framework QStruc for qualitative structural analysis which combines first principles in structural engineering and experimental knowledge of structural behavior. The purpose of QStruc is to generate refined qualitative models and to infer the qualitative response of a given preliminary structure. The results are expressed by qualitative deflected shape, moments and reactions. The proposed qualitative analysis strategy is a “greedy” depth-first algorithm that tries to expand the response of behavior as much as possible from known parameter values. This strategy makes use of a causal ordering mechanism, qualitative calculus and Quantity Lattice (R. Simmons, “Commonsense arithmetic reasoning” in Proceedings of the AAAI86 , pp. 118–124, Morgan Kaufmann, San Mateo, California, 1986) to reason about partial ordering among physical parameters.

Variable influence duration (VID) join is a novel spatio-temporal join operation between a set T of trajectories and a set P of spatial points. Here, trajectories are traveling histories of moving objects (e.g., travelers), and spatial points are points of interest (POIs, e.g., restaurants). VID join returns all pairs of (τs, p) if τs is spatially close to p for a long period of time, where τs is a segment of trajectory τ ∈ T and p ∈ P. Each returned (τs, p) implies that the moving object associated with τs stayed at p (e.g., having dinner at a restaurant). Such information is useful in many aspects, such as targeted advertising, social security, and social activity analysis. The concepts of influence and influence duration are introduced to measure the spatial closeness between τ and p, and the time spanned, respectively. Compared to the conventional spatio-temporal join, the VID join is more challenging since the join condition varies for different POIs, and the additional temporal requirement cannot be indexed effectively. To process the VID join e?ciently, three algorithms are developed and several optimization techniques are applied, including spatial duplication reuse and time duration based pruning. The performance of the developed algorithms is verified by extensive experiments on real spatial data.

The current study presents an innovative integrated multi-generation system tailored for residential communities based on a novel cascade heat integration configuration. The proposed system is designed for scalability, making it adaptable for various residential communities, from small housing complexes to larger urban developments. Its modular architecture allows flexible integration with existing infrastructure, enabling widespread deployment in diverse geographic and economic conditions. Utilizing a real-time machine learning framework, the system dynamically optimizes energy distribution and operational efficiency, making it feasible for large-scale implementation while maintaining economic viability and environmental benefits. Hence, a real-time machine learning framework is implemented to optimize key operational parameters dynamically, ensuring efficient fuel utilization, energy distribution, and load balancing across the system. The ML model continuously processes sensor data to adjust SOFC current density, GT pressure ratio, and ORC steam pressure, maximizing exergy efficiency while minimizing operational costs and CO 2 emissions. Additionally, it enhances system reliability through predictive maintenance and demand-based power allocation, enabling a more adaptive and cost-effective multi-generation process. Noteworthy outcomes highlight an exergy efficiency improvement from 48 % to 60 % and a power output increase from 6.1 MW to 11.6 MW. Additionally, the levelized cost of electricity is notably reduced from 8 to 3 cents/kWh. The system also provides extra benefits by generating freshwater and hydrogen, addressing various societal challenges.
