In visual-based Reinforcement Learning (RL), agents often struggle to generalize well to environmental variations in the state space that were not observed during training. The variations can arise in both task-irrelevant features, such as background noise, and task-relevant features, such as robot configurations, that are related to the optimal decisions. To achieve generalization in both situations, agents are required to accurately understand the impact of changed features on the decisions, i.e., establishing the true associations between changed features and decisions in the policy model. However, due to the inherent correlations among features in the state space, the associations between features and decisions become entangled, making it difficult for the policy to distinguish them. To this end, we propose Saliency-Guided Features Decorrelation (SGFD) to eliminate these correlations through sample reweighting. Concretely, SGFD consists of two core techniques: Random Fourier Functions (RFF) and the saliency map. RFF is utilized to estimate the complex non-linear correlations in high-dimensional images, while the saliency map is designed to identify the changed features. Under the guidance of the saliency map, SGFD employs sample reweighting to minimize the estimated correlations related to changed features, thereby achieving decorrelation in visual RL tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that SGFD can generalize well on a wide range of test environments and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in handling both task-irrelevant variations and task-relevant variations. Block-Structured Optimization for Subgraph Detection in Interdependent Networks

We propose a generalized framework for block-structured nonconvex optimization, which can be applied to structured subgraph detection in interdependent networks, such as multi-layer networks, temporal networks, networks of networks, and many others. Specifically, we design an effective, efficient, and parallelizable projection algorithm, namely Graph Block-structured Gradient Projection (GBGP), to optimize a general non-linear function subject to graph-structured constraints. We prove that our algorithm: 1) runs in nearly-linear time on the network size;2) enjoys a theoretical approximation guarantee. Moreover, we demonstrate how our framework can be applied to two very practical applications and conduct comprehensive experiments to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm. A Bayesian Optimization approach for calibrating large-scale activity-based transport models

The use of Agent-Based and Activity-Based modeling in transportation is rising due to the capability of addressing complex applications such as disruptive trends (e.g., remote working and automation) or the design and assessment of disaggregated management strategies. Still, the broad adoption of large-scale disaggregate models is not materializing due to the inherently high complexity and computational needs. Activity-based models focused on behavioral theory, for example, may involve hundreds of parameters that need to be calibrated to match the detailed socio-economical characteristics of the population for any case study. This paper tackles this issue by proposing a novel Bayesian Optimization approach incorporating a surrogate model in the form of an improved Random Forest, designed to automate the calibration process of the behavioral parameters. The proposed method is tested on a case study for the city of Tallinn, Estonia, where the model to be calibrated consists of 477 behavioral parameters, using the SimMobility MT software. Satisfactory performance is achieved in the major indicators defined for the calibration process: the error for the overall number of trips is equal to 4% and the average error in the OD matrix is 15.92 vehicles per day. © 2023, CC BY.

Supervised methods on 3D medical image segmentation need large amounts of annotated data, but annotating is time-consuming. Also, existing 3D segmentation methods capture more global structural information but overlook local detailed features, which negatively impacts the segmentation of small tissues. In this paper, we propose a novel weakly-supervised 2D-3D Feature Co-Embedding Network (2D-3D CoENet) that includes 2D and 3D encoding layers, simultaneously extracting 2D local detailed and 3D global structural features. To reduce annotation costs, we use fewer labeled slices as ground truth and pseudo-labels are generated by 2D-3D CoENet for other slices. Additionally, multi-view learning is introduced to capture more 2D local detailed information, and a Multi-view Semantic Consistency loss (MSC loss) is proposed to constrain features from multiple perspectives. To further enhance the local detailed texture features, we propose an Edge Enhancement Module (EEM) in the 3D segmentation network to enhance the edge detail features. Our experimental results on the SKI10 dataset and OAI ZIB dataset demonstrate that our method outperforms the SOTA weakly-supervised segmentation methods. Moreover, our approach achieves results that are comparable to the fully-supervised upper bound results.

Object Level Depth Reconstruction for Category Level 6D Object Pose Estimation From Monocular RGB Image

Recently, RGBD-based category-level 6D object pose estimation has achieved promising improvement in performance, however, the requirement of depth information prohibits broader applications. In order to relieve this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach named Object Level Depth reconstruction Network (OLD-Net) taking only RGB images as input for category-level 6D object pose estimation. We propose to directly predict object-level depth from a monocular RGB image by deforming the category-level shape prior into object-level depth and the canonical NOCS representation. Two novel modules named Normalized Global Position Hints (NGPH) and Shape-aware Decoupled Depth Reconstruction (SDDR) module are introduced to learn high fidelity object-level depth and delicate shape representations. At last, the 6D object pose is solved by aligning the predicted canonical representation with the back-projected object-level depth. Extensive experiments on the challenging CAMERA25 and REAL275 datasets indicate that our model, though simple, achieves state-of-the-art performance. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Consistency label-activated region generating network for weakly supervised medical image segmentation

The current methods of auto-segmenting medical images are limited due to insufficient and ambiguous pathonmorphological labeling. In clinical practice, rough classification labels (such as disease or normal) are more commonly used than precise segmentation masks. However, there is still much to be explored regarding utilizing these weak clinical labels to accurately determine the lesion mask and guide medical image segmentation. In this paper, we proposed a weakly supervised medical image segmentation model to directly generate the lesion mask through a class activation map (CAM) guided cycle-consistency label-activated region transferring network. Cycle-consistency enforces that the mappings between the two domains should be reversible, which ensures that the original image can be reconstructed from the translated image. We developed a complementary branches fusion module to address the issue of blurry boundaries in CAM-guided segmentation. The complementary branch preserves the original semantic information of the non-lesion region and perfectly fuses the transferred feature of the lesion region with a complementary mask-constrained fake image generation process to clear the boundary of the lesion and non-lesion regions. This module allows the class transformation to focus solely on the label-activated region, resulting in more explicit segmentation. This model can accurately identify different region of medical images at the pixel-level while preserving the overall semantic structure semantion. It organizes disease labels and corresponding regions during image synthesis. Our method utilizes a joint discrimination strategy that significantly enhances the precision of the produced lesion mask. Extensive experiments of the proposed method on BraTs, ISIC and COVID-19 datasets demonstrate superior performance over existing state-of-the-art methods. Split Moves for Monte-Carlo Tree Search

In many games, moves consist of several decisions made by the player. These decisions can be viewed as separate moves, which is already a common practice in multi-action games for efficiency reasons. Such division of a player move into a sequence of simpler / lower level moves is called splitting. So far, split moves have been applied only in forementioned straightforward cases, and furthermore, there was almost no study revealing its impact on agents’ playing strength. Taking the knowledge-free perspective, we aim to answer how to effectively use split moves within Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) and what is the practical impact of split design on agents’ strength. This paper proposes a generalization of MCTS that works with arbitrarily split moves. We design several variations of the algorithm and try to measure the impact of split moves separately on efficiency, quality of MCTS, simulations, and action-based heuristics. The tests are carried out on a set of board games and performed using the Regular Boardgames General Game Playing formalism, where split strategies of different granularity can be automatically derived based on an abstract description of the game. The results give an overview of the behavior of agents using split design in different ways. Since the mechanism of action of drug molecules in the human body is difficult to reproduce in the in vitro environment, it becomes difficult to reveal the causes of the activity cliff phenomenon of drug molecules. We found out the AC of small molecules has been extensively investigated but limited knowledge is accumulated about the AC phenomenon in peptides with canonical amino acids. Understanding the mechanism of AC in canonical amino acids might help understand the one in drug molecules. This study introduces a quantitative definition and benchmarking framework AMPCliff for the AC phenomenon in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) composed by canonical amino acids. A comprehensive analysis of the existing AMP dataset reveals a significant prevalence of AC within AMPs. AMPCliff quantifies the activities of AMPs by the MIC, and defines 0.9 as the minimum threshold for the normalized BLOSUM62 similarity score between a pair of aligned peptides with at least two-fold MIC changes. This study establishes a benchmark dataset of paired AMPs in Staphylococcus aureus from the publicly available AMP dataset GRAMPA, and conducts a rigorous procedure to evaluate various AMP AC prediction models, including nine machine learning, four deep learning algorithms, four masked language models, and four generative language models. Our analysis reveals that these models are capable of detecting AMP AC events and the pre-trained protein language model ESM2 demonstrates superior performance across the evaluations. The predictive performance of AMP activity cliffs remains to be further improved, considering that ESM2 with 33 layers only achieves the Spearman correlation coefficient 0.4669 for the regression task of the MIC values on the benchmark dataset. The insurance sector is an immense data-driven enterprise with no produced product to develop and market. The data created in such an industry would be financial, risk, customer, producer, and actuarial data. Data acquired by such sectors from prior decades was structured data complemented by information on the goods and the policyholders. However, a vast volume of unstructured/semi-structured data is now available, which is still not investigated. Further to this, the insurer will still be ignorant to utilize the data fruitfully. Healthcare delivery and funding have been obscured throughout the last century by life insurance issues, although there are major similarities between the two. Research finds the optimum places for organizations that require unstructured and structured data for their success. Applied analytics will enhance the usage of insurance sector data. Additionally, insurance-industry big data analytics are examined with adoption methods of big data such as educating, Exploring, Engaging, and Executing. This article addresses the data transformation techniques used in the Insurance Industry and highlights all the models of the data adoption and transformation mechanisms that assist the Insurance Industry to develop better and enhanced data analysis and prediction. Using "Big Data Analytics" necessitates a fundamental rethinking of the current structure of health care services. Aside from examining how this new era of sophisticated and enhanced data management is benefiting the insurance industry, we'll also analyze the different consequences, characteristics, and use cases that lead to new technologies and ultimately contribute to economic success, which we'll cover in this study.
