This paper describes a proposal to develop a Tourism Recommendation System based in Users and Points-of-Interest (POI) functionality/accessibility levels. The focus is to evaluate if user’s physical and psychological functionality levels can perform an important role in recommendation results accuracy. This work also aims to show the importance of POI classification (accessibility levels are related with each POI ability to receive tourists with certain levels of physical and psychological issues), through the definition of a different model regarding their accessibility and other characteristics. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

It’s Time to Consider ‘Time’ when Evaluating Recommender-System Algorithms [Proposal]

In this position paper, we question the current practice of calculating evaluation metrics for recommender systems as single numbers (e.g. precision p=.28 or mean absolute error MAE = 1.21). We argue that single numbers express only average effectiveness over usually a rather long period (e.g. a year or even longer). This practice provides only a vague and static view of the data. We propose that recommender-system researchers should instead calculate metrics for time-series such as weeks or months, and plot the results in e.g. a line chart. This way, results show how algorithms’ effectiveness develops over time, and hence the results allow drawing more meaningful conclusions about how an algorithm will perform in the future. In this paper, we explain our reasoning, provide an example to illustrate our reasoning and present suggestions for what the community should do next. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper presents a Web-based Decision Support System (Web-DSS) that was designed and developed to support and provide suggestions on the procedures taking place between a port and a dry port, which have to collaborate, work concurrently and optimize their joint operation. The system operates at the highest hierarchical level supervising a number of different components dealing with three different time scale horizons so as to provide assistance at operational, tactical and strategic level. The Web-based DSS coordinates and integrates the subsystems operating at lower levels and it interfaces with all the involved actors: customers, suppliers, relevant authorities so as to receive all the necessary information to come up with “optimal” suggestions and decisions. In this paper, the overall architecture is presented and the individual modules are described.

The number of word embedding models is growing every year. Most of them are based on the co-occurrence information of words and their contexts. However, it is still an open question what is the best definition of context. We provide a systematical investigation of 4 different syntactic context types and context representations for learning word embeddings. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to evaluate their effectiveness on 6 extrinsic and intrinsic tasks. We hope that this paper, along with the published code, would be helpful for choosing the best context type and representation for a given task. © 2017 Association for Computational Linguistics.

A science department on the campus of the University of Illinois has received numerous national awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The secret to their success? For nearly two decades, they have collaboratively used evidence-based instructional practices (EBIP) in their introductory level courses. Despite these successes and efforts to spread their EBIP, no other departments followed this department's lead. Then, suddenly six years ago, many instructors from other departments began adopting EBIP in their classrooms. This article asks what was the catalyst for this change? Why had previous attempts at institutional change failed? The authors answer these questions by analyzing their efforts to transform the teaching practices in large-enrollment science and engineering introductory courses on their campus.

How China Deals with Big Data

On September 5, 2015, the State Council of Chinese Government, China’s cabinet formally announced its Action Framework for Promoting Big Data (***, 2015). This is the milestone for China to catch up the global wave of big data. Since 2012 big data became a hot issue for scientific communities as well as the governments of many countries (Lazer et al. in science 343:1203–1205, 2014;Einav et al. in science 345:715, 2014;Cate in science 346:818, 2014;Khoury and Ioannidis in science 346:1054–1055, 2014). At the 2013 G8 Summit, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, U.S.A. and United Kingdom agreed on an "open government plan" (***/government/publications/open-data-charter/g8-open-data-charter-and-technical-annex, 2013). China’s framework, however, mainly emphasizes the integration of all trans-departmental data and establishes a number of government-driven national big data platforms so as to provide big data services to research, public and enterprises. The framework not only demonstrates a strong commitment of the Chinese government on big data, but also covers a wide range of governmental branches, enterprises and institutions far more than that of other countries. In addition, the framework shows an interpretation of big data that differs from other countries. Summary Being the second-largest country in the Middle East, Iran has a long history of civilisation during which several dynasties have been overthrown and established and health-related structures have been reorganised. Iran has had the replacement of traditional practices with modern medical treatments, emergence of multiple pioneer scientists and physicians with great contributions to the advancement of science, environmental and ecological changes in addition to large-scale natural disasters, epidemics of multiple communicable diseases, and the shift towards non-communicable diseases in recent decades. Given the lessons learnt from political instabilities in the past centuries and the approaches undertaken to overcome health challenges at the time, Iran has emerged as it is today. Iran is now a country with a population exceeding 80 million, mainly inhabiting urban regions, and has an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, malignancies, mental disorders, substance abuse, and road injuries.
