Effects of digitization/mobilization and emotional design of textbooks on emotion, various cognitive load and cognitive performance

The study aimed to examine how emotional design and digitalization/mobilization of textbooks influence students’ emotion, cognitive load, and cognitive performance. Research samples were 147 undergraduate students enrolling in the “Introduction to Internet” course at a university. They were randomly divided into three groups: 51 students in the control group using traditional paper textbooks;49 students in the experimental group I using e-textbooks with emotional design;47 students in the experimental group II consisted using e-textbooks without emotional design. The MANCOVA was adopted to analyze gathered data. The results revealed learners’ positive emotion was significantly higher when using e-textbooks with emotional design than when using paper textbooks. Three types of cognitive load was significantly better when using e-textbooks with emotional design than when using e-textbooks without emotional design and paper textbooks. Cognitive efficiency was significantly better when using two types of e-textbooks (with and without emotional design) than when using paper textbooks. In a word, “emotional design and digitalization/mobilization” of textbooks (i.e. e-textbooks with emotional design) would significantly improve positive emotion;emotional design would significantly decrease intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load when using e-textbooks, and significantly increase germane cognitive load;digitalization/mobilization of textbooks (i.e. e-textbooks) significantly improved cognitive efficiency. What the study learned was that learners might firstly adopt e-textbooks with emotional design, and those without emotional design secondly, and paper textbooks rank last;viz., digitalized/mobilized textbooks (namely e-textbooks) were better than paper textbooks. This study aims to explore how e-textbooks with emotional design affect students' emotion, cognitive load and learning achievement. There were 147 freshman students in total: the experimental group I, II and control group consisted of 49, 47 and 51 students, using e-textbooks with emotional design, without emotional design and traditional paper textbooks. The results reveal the following: Students' emotion after using e-textbooks with emotional design is more positive than those using e-textbooks without emotional design and paper textbooks. Students' cognitive load after using e-textbooks with emotional design is significantly lower than those using etextbooks without emotional design. Students' learning achievement after using two types of e-textbooks is better than after using paper textbooks. Comparing all types of textbooks altogether, emotion has a significantly positive correlation with learning achievement, and both emotion and learnng achievement are significantly and negatively correlated with cognitive load. For the three types of textbooks, the relationship between emotion and learning achievement all becomes not significantly correlated. For two types of e-textbooks, cognitive load and learning achievement become not significantly correlated, disturbed by the digitalization of textbooks. Instructors are suggested to firstly adopt e-textbooks with emotional design, those without emotional design secondly, and paper textbooks rank last. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of different combined annotations with first and second languages for verbal annotations and pictures and animation for visual annotations. It was administered on PDAs to further confirm whether the results are in agreement with those implemented on the desktop. According to the assigned annotation type, four classes of 121 senior high school freshmen in central Taiwan read 4 passages, each of which had 5 target English verbs, annotated in the following ways: L1 definition-plus-graphics, L1 definition-plus-animation, L2 definition-plus- graphics, and L2 definition-plus-animation. These participants took an immediate posttest after reading each and a delayed parallel posttest one month after the experiment. Two-way ANOVA analyses indicated no significant differences between the definition languages but significant differences between the visual aids, with animation more effective;besides, no interaction effects were observed. The findings of definition languages were in line with the previous studies', and this study offered evidence from younger adults and lower proficient English learners. The performance for animation over pictures supported the argument that dynamic animation is designed to illustrate concepts of changes and processes such as English verbs. Directions for future research and suggestions for language practitioners are also discussed.

This study integrated Chinese, Geography, and computer science courses, with teachers from those disciplines collaborating to prepare their courses. The study employed mobile devices in the learning activities, used the situated learning strategy, and involved the students in real-life investigation in the interdisciplinary literacy curriculum. The students observed, learning in the real-life environment, and utilized mobile technologies to support their data collection and information searching. The students made connections between the knowledge in the textbook and the real-life situation in the literacy-based learning activities. After they came back to the classroom, they used the data and photos they had collected to design the virtual reality of the environment they had visited in order to recall and reflect on the activity. This study primarily explored the learning effectiveness of Chinese, and found that the students made significant progress. However, from the investigation of motivation, it was found that the students did not prefer to practicing writing based on the virtual reality situation in comparison with the real-life situation. © 2018 Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education..All Rights Reserved.

This paper presents a novel architecture utilizing blockchain technology to enhance educational systems. A method is proposed that empowers non-fungible tokens by updating their metadata through an API layer, making blockchain technology more accessible to K-12 students. Leveraging Google Blockly, a visual programming language, the aim is to engage students in computational thinking and foster their understanding of blockchain concepts. The approach promotes student engagement, facilitates the comprehension of digital ownership and value, and develops essential skills for the digital age. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the steps taken by human resource (HR) managers at India’s Yes Bank to enhance employee retention and to create an environment conducive to growth. Design/methodology/approach Information gathered from semi-structured interviews has been presented. Findings This paper reveals how Yes Bank has transformed its working environment through innovative HR practices. Practical implications The approach adopted by an emerging Indian bank to address various HR issues has been detailed, and it is shown how the bank responded to changes and challenges in the internal and external environments. Social implications This paper explains that Indian banks are about to come under increasing competitive pressure, as limits on foreign direct investment are relaxed. Originality/value This paper provides plenty to interest practicing managers, researchers and students in HR management, organizational behavior and industrial relations.

From the perspective of pedagogy, this study aims to recognize the influence of students' learning motivations and computer self-efficacy when learning through online platforms, with learning achievement as the criterion for future instruction and related studies. By literature review, this study probes into related learning theories and actual operations as the base of research development, and elaborates on the students' differences of learning achievements according to questionnaire and learning performance. The results show that: 1. Learning motivation positively influences computer self-efficacy. 2. Learning motivation positively influences learning effectiveness. 3. Computer self-efficacy positively influences learning effectiveness. 4. Computer self-efficacy reveals mediating effects between learning motivation and learning effectiveness. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Purpose: This paper explores how Educational Big Data Analytics can enhance student learning. It investigates the role of active learning in improving students’ data analysis skills and critical thinking. By actively engaging students in data analysis assessments, the aim is to equip them with the skills to navigate the data-rich educational landscape. Methods: The study uses a teaching strategy that combines structured and unstructured data analysis using Python tools and ChatGPT APIs. It presents five assignments, each highlighting data analysis skills and encouraging critical thinking. Results: The paper offers insights into how the teaching strategy effectively enhances students’ data analysis and critical thinking skills. It investigates the specific impact of active learning on students’ engagement with educational data. The study reveals that all students can complete a comprehensive project, integrating the skills they have learned in the five assignments related to educational big data while incorporating the educational implications from their respective disciplines. Conclusion: The key lies in instructors being able to design individual assignments that link practical experiences, enabling each teaching session’s effectiveness to accumulate in students’ personal experiences and practical skills, ultimately empowering them with the abilities necessary to work effectively with Educational Big Data Analytics. The findings of this study make a valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation about enhancing the educational experience for students in this data-rich era. © The Author(s) 2024.

Enterprises must use human resource management to create the difference in the fierce competition of today’s business environment. Employees are an enterprise’s most important assets, and it is important for administrators to grasp the psychology of their staff. Modern technology provided by mobile instant messaging (IM) has created a communication revolution, creating a culture of "texting rather than talking" through the use of smart phone mobile applications, such as WhatsApp, Line, and WeChat. Therefore, it is important for researchers to consider the influence of IM on work relationships and communication. This study explores the relationships between organizational trust, organizational justice, and organizational spirituality in the context of IM communication. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze questionnaire data, showing that organizational spirituality predicted organizational trust and organizational justice. The findings suggested that organizations should utilize the benefits of IM, create an organizational justice strategy, offer better human resource management, and create an environment in which employees’ organizational spirituality can be enhanced. © 2019, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
