In the context of the maintenance of urban and extra-urban road infrastructures, the need to support Public Administrations in the selection of technological solutions able to, on one hand, pursue compliance with i) environmental issue, ii) urban planning and iii) protection of cultural and landscape heritage regulations, and, on the other hand, to be financially sustainable, is relevant. The aim of the present research concerns the definition of a methodological approach for the assessment of the parametric costs of innovative technological solutions, by taking into account their differentials compared to the traditional ones, i.e. the solutions generally applied in the considered contexts. With reference to twenty roads located into the city of Rome (Italy), assumed as case studies, the parametric costs for the traditional solutions and the innovative ones have been built, by evaluating all the working expenses that occur for their realization. Fragility curves of a gravity load designed r.c. hospital building: a case study

The awareness of the vulnerability of strategic structures such as hospitals is of primary importance as local governments have the necessity of a global overview of the seismic performance of these facilities, to decide how to best allocate funds for restorations. From this point of view, the fragility curves of a building represent a powerful tool that allows to assess the probability of exceeding a damage threshold (or a limit state). Such information is useful for the assessment of the structure, and for investigating the possibility to maintain functions during and immediately after earthquakes. In this paper the case study of an hospital facility is presented. The structure was analysed and verified by means of non-linear static analyses (Pushover) and incremental non-linear dynamic analyses (IDA). Furthermore, the fragility curves for four different damage levels (null, slight, moderate and severe) and two different seismic intensity measures were obtained.

The preservation, the safeguard and the valorization of the existing architectural heritage requires the development of theoretical and experimental approaches that can effectively identify any damage of the structures that could lead to their collapse. In the case of masonry constructions, the methodology becomes complex both due to the uncertainties deriving from the mechanical behavior of the masonry material, and due to the necessity to use contactless experimental approaches, which do not lead to the damage of the structure and can also be performed during the service life phase. In this article, we propose a damage identification method for masonry arches and vaults, based on the analysis of the dynamic tests results. In particular, our approach is able to identify the collapse mechanism of masonry curved structures in terms of position of hinges and depths of cracks. The case study consists of a clay-brick masonry arch subjected to an eccentric load on extrados. The experimental values of frequencies were used to calibrate a numerical model of the undamaged arch. A comparison between numerical and experimental frequencies values related to damaged and undamaged configuration was allowed to develop an effective approach to identify the collapse mechanism of arch.

The paper introduces a new lime plaster composition, with a Super Bio-Polymeric Adsorbent (SABP), for interior applications to improve hygrothermal and acoustic comfort. Alginate SABP is added to a conventional lime plaster to improve hygroscopic and acoustic performance. The hygrothermal and acoustic properties of the modified plaster are compared with the ones of the original plaster with a preliminary moisture uptake test, the evaluation of the sorption isotherm, the moisture buffering value (MBV), and the acoustic absorption. The results show a significant increase in the equilibrium moisture contents and the MBV (from 0.7 to 6.2 g/(m2 ...%RH)). At the same time, the sound absorption coefficient is slightly improved, increasing 0.1-0.2 at frequencies higher than 500 Hz compared to the reference conventional lime plaster. The paper describes the material characterization: the sorption isotherm and the MBV are obtained using a dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) analyzer. Ozone has been linked to both acute and chronic health effects, and with the ongoing trend of global warming, the associated health risks are expected to increase. Our study focuses on investigating the spatial variations of ozone in typical rowhouses in one of the most ozone-polluted cities in the United States, using experimentally validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Our results indicate that houses facing south-east and southwest have significantly higher mean ozone concentrations, with higher concentrations observed on upper floors. We also found that indoor ozone exposure at 1.0m height could pose a significant risk to children’s health. © 2023 *** rights reserved.

The authors thank the discusser for the attention and interests on our previous work, entitled "Seismic damage analysis due to near-fault multipulse ground motion" (referred to as the original paper/work in the following text). To demonstrate the increased seismic demands required by multipulse ground motions compared to non- and single-pulse ground motions, three cases were illustrated in the original work, including frame structures, a soil slope and a concrete dam. The discusser, Dr *** Hariri-Ardebili, raised concerns on the seismic response of the dam, together with the optimal intensity measure of ground motions. Specifically, four subissues are involved, including effectiveness of the numerical model of dam, the damage index for dam, the selection strategy for input ground motions, and the ground motion intensity measures. Detailed responses to these issues are provided. In short, the main conclusion in the original paper that the multipulse ground motions potentially cause more severe damage compared to non- and single-pulse ground motions is reliable. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The preservation and seismic risk mitigation of unreinforced masonry heritage remains a hot topic in structural research. Poor tensile strength, low ductility, irregular texture and lack of transverse connections are among the main causes of the high vulnerability and fragile behavior of historic masonry structures under seismic loading. Aiming to increase the resilience of the built environment to exceptional and unpredicted events, from past three decades the research community has been focusing its attention on investigating the best and durable retrofitting solutions to improve the structural capacity of masonry artefacts. Among the different techniques proposed in the technical literature, the Textile-Reinforced Mortar (TRM) is gaining a growing consensus. TRM composites are a combination of inorganic matrices and high-strength fibers. Thanks to its characteristics of vapor permeability, heat resistance, easy workability and compatibility with many substrate materials, TRM is currently recognized as the most appropriate reinforcement for historic masonry. Nevertheless, many uncertainties still arise about its mechanical behavior due to the complex interactions among its components (fiber and matrix) as well as between the TRM and the substrate to which it is applied. The present study aims to investigate from a numerical viewpoint the TRM three-dimensional behavior and, particularly, the key mechanical parameters necessary for the correct simulation and prediction of its response. This is achieved by replicating a wide multi-scale experimental campaign making use of 3D continuum numerical micro models where each component, including interfaces, is represented separately. The numerical simulation of the tests, carried out by employing consistent parameters throughout the modeling scales, brought to light novel knowledge concerning the minimum number of experiments needed to properly model the behavior of TRM composites. © The Author(s), under exclusive license t

An advanced BPNN/RVEA coupled control strategy for novel immersed liquid cooling battery thermal management system

This study introduces a novel distributed-inlet circulatory immersion liquid cooling (DIC-IC) battery thermal management system (BTMS), optimised using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), backpropagation neural networks (BPNN), and the reference vector-guided evolutionary algorithm (RVEA). The BPNN model accurately predicted maximum temperature Tmax, temperature difference ΔTmax, and input power. Multi-objective optimisation (MOO) achieved a 24 % reduction in Tmax to 30.13 °C and a 70 % reduction in ΔTmax to 3.58 °C with power consumption of only 0.7 m3/s3, significantly reducing energy usage by up to 95 % compared to initial designs. Dynamic cooling strategies, including static, equilibrium, and boost modes, were proposed to address various operational conditions. The boost mode reduced Tmax and ΔTmax by an additional 5.9 % and 4.3 % respectively under 5C discharge, demonstrating superior thermal safety. These findings provide a practical framework for efficient and low-energy BTMSs that enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries in high-power density and high-temperature applications. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The research concerns the redevelopment of school building assets topic and intends to apply an evaluation methodological approach for the optimal allocation of available financial resources. In the current context characterized by the need to properly use the public funding by avoiding to waste the given precious opportunity and to start effective urban interventions, in the present analysis the implementation of an methodology aimed to determine the project solution capable of minimizing the existing gap between the final cost and the spending budget set for the intervention is carried out. The case study is related to the city of Rome and, in particular, regard 111 energy retrofit projects of school buildings located in the 15 municipalities included in the context of the Italian capital. The application of the method allows to compare the estimated total costs with the preliminarily set monetary limit and to identify the categories of work "to be modified" in order to be under budget and to maintain an adequate quality and performance standard of the different project components. In particular, for each work category of the considered initiatives a very low value differential between the already estimated costs and the optimal costs is determined. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
