It is well known that the passive strategies applying in traditional buildings respond satisfactory to climatic requirements and succeed to provide maximum indoor comfort with minimum energy *** this point of view,it is interesting to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of the vernacular strategies to improve the environmental performance of the building's envelope under desert climate *** research tries to address this issue and was undertaken in southern Algeria where a very hot and arid climate *** effect of some selected passive cooling strategies on enhancing the building's envelope climate performance was *** strategies are inspired from the local vernacular architecture,and they are expected to provide satisfactory indoor thermal comfort for users and to reduce the energy cooling demand from residential *** field and computational investigations,two existing residential buildings were tested:a typical residential unit and a contemporary vernacular(neo-vernacular)*** the latter,climate responsive strategies inspired from vernacular architecture were applied.A comparison based on site measurements was carried out on the two selected buildings which differ from their envelope design properties and components.

Fundamental Study on Alkali-Activated Slag System with Sodium Carbonate or Calcium Hydroxide

Cement as a building material, has high fluidity, compressive strength, and durability, but carbon dioxide emissions during cement production are a major problem. As one of the countermeasures, alkali-activated cement using blast furnace slag powder with alkaline stimulants is considered to be a very promising solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but there is a lack of information about the fundamental properties of alkali-activated materials. This study presents an experimental investigation of the fundamental properties of an alkali-activated slag system with sodium carbonate (NC) and calcium hydroxide (CH). The effects of calcium sulfo-aluminate (CSA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) on the properties of blast furnace slag (BFS) based alkali-activated mixture were also investigated. In the experiments, fundamental characteristics including compressive strength, drying shrinkage, and water penetration tests of mortar were evaluated. Porosity, pH, and ignition loss were measured to verify the effectiveness of the materials. The experimental investigation revealed that the compressive strength was increased with the increasing replacement rates of NC in the BFS mortar, and in the case of water to BFS ratio of 0.45 with sodium carbonation addition contents 10 wt.%, the compressive strength for 28 days of curing reaches more than 50 MPa. Low water to BFS ratio and higher addition ratio of NC had a positive effect on the compressive strength development of mortar. Incorporating NC into BFS would affect the decrease in porosity and increase in ignition loss, leading to higher compressive strength. There was a negligible change to the compressive strength, porosity, pH, and ignition loss of BFS samples made with CH, thus, the addition rates of CH to BFS have no or little significant effect on the fundamental properties of alkali-activated cement. The simulation work presented in this work deals with the generation of acoustic effects with various available software tools. Generally, Audacity software is used for generation of different sound events such as simple tone, chirp, pink noise, white noise, etc. This software can be further utilized for performing acoustic related experiments on human. In this work, software-based test rig is created for performing listening test for analysis of the sound perception by various subjects. This listening test aims to rate the quality of a set of signals produced by source separation systems. This work helped in analysing that how perception of sound is affected. Software based test rig is created for performing listening test for analysis of the sound perception by various subjects. The purpose of this listening evaluation is to assess the level of a collection of signals generated by source separation systems. Source separation seeks to isolate a target source’s signal from a mashup of many sound sources. Effects of mask wearing duration and relative humidity on thermal perception in the summer outdoor built environment

During the pandemic,face masks are one of the most significant self-protection necessities,but they also cause heat *** using the ERA5(ECMWF Reanalysis 5th Generation)database and the local weather bureau data,the effect of mask wearing on outdoor thermal sensation has been investigated by a survey conducted in the hot summer and cold winter region of eastern China in the summer of *** show that wearing a face mask for a longer period result in a higher level of discomfort,and the primary source of discomfort is hot and stuffy *** effect of relative humidity is crucial for mask wearers in warm-biased thermal environments,as mean thermal sensation vote(TSV)peaks when environmental relative humidity reaches the range of 70%to 80%and decreases after this range due to the evaporation within the microclimate created by a face ***,prolonged mask wearing increases participants’hot feelings,especially in warm ***,participants wearing face masks for less than 30 min feel hot at a physiological equivalent temperature(PET)value of 34.4℃,but those who wear them for over 60 min express hot feelings even at a PET value of 24.7℃.The participants who wear a face mask while walking slowly outdoors have similar thermal sensations to those who do not wear a mask,but are in a higher activity *** findings demonstrate that mask wearing has a crucial impact on outdoor thermal comfort assessment in a warm-biased outdoor thermal environment.

The relentless progression of digitalisation permeates every sector, including maritime and transport industries. This study explores the digitalisation landscape expected to evolve over the next decade, with a particular focus on its impact on ports. Employing a combination of Delphi and Roadmapping analyses, it seeks to identify the most probable, impactful, and desirable scenarios. The findings give insight on two principal aspects: they identify the digitalisation trends most related and impactful to future ports, and they provide guidance on which technologies to prioritise, also providing their phased implementation to achieve specific scenarios over time. The research is structured around three alternative scenarios: efficiency-driven, security-oriented, and green-centric, each with distinct implications for port development and management. © 2025 The Authors

The aim of this research is to characterize parts from innovative hybrid printing method for obtaining dense metal components using affordable fused filament fabrication (FFF). The introduction of Desktop Metal technology in 2015 really attracts an increase in industrial interest in the FFF printing of highly metal-filled filament. Even though FFF is a well-known process, there are not many studies on how to optimize the printing parameters for these feedstocks. The effects of the printing setting on producing high-quality green parts and enhancing the mechanical properties of the finished 17-4 PH metallic parts are investigated in this work. The influence of four printing profiles provided by a BASF plugin for Ultimaker Cura slicing software, obtained by combining different printing parameters is investigated. The ASTM E8 tensile test is used to determine the mechanical characteristics of the finished metal components. To identify differences in morphology, optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations are made on both sections of green and sintered samples. The effect of printing parameters on shrinkage and density are also taken into consideration. The findings demonstrate the importance of optimizing the printing of the green parts in order to produce full metal components that are both strong and dense. © 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

The road vertical design is one of the more complicated problems in the rural reconstruction of villages and towns. In order to make a construction drawing effectively and quickly, the algorithm and a calculation program of the directed graph were used to solve this problem. After analyzing the geometric model, slope direction and elevation limit of the road network, the algorithm is designed by depth first approach and elevation limit analysis. The algorithm was designed of gradually adjust elevation in step searches, and the design validity is verified by breadth first search. Compared with the traditional manual calculation design adjustment, it greatly improves the design efficiency. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Lighting system in commercial and residential buildings constitutes a major source of the world energy consumption. Optimizing energy efficiency through lighting management requires an optimal control strategy in order to balance daylighting requirements while maintaining visual comfort in illuminated spaces. This paper introduces an intelligent control approach for lighting and shading system by optimizing operation modes and balancing between them while providing constant illuminance with a maximum visual comfort. In a real-lab environment, a prototype for lighting and shading system was tested and implemented, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for operation and management. AI techniques are integrated to enable a smart coordination between lighting and shading systems in order to maintain the required light level. To validate the proposed approach, experiments were carried out, and the results demonstrated the solution's effectiveness by maintaining the ideal level of lighting with efficient consumption. In fact, the proposed control is capable of optimizing energy consumption by more than 45% compared to a normal lighting operation while maintaining occupants' visual comfort within a suitable illuminance. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper presents an initial reflection on the possibility of adopting Suh’s Axiomatic Design (AD) as a framework to integrate and coordinate the different methods used by the architecture engineering and Construction (AEC) industry to evidence-base decision-making for sustainability. A taxonomy for aggregating the different methods used by the AEC industry is proposed so they can be inserted into the AD framework and used to support and formulate evidence-based design decisions in a way that is systematic, informed and, among other things, traceable so true records of the design process can be retrieved. The taxonomy is based on the new EN ISO standards and the literature on design research and decision-making. It organizes the discussion about the feasibility of having AD as a facilitator for integrated building design and operation in the AEC industry. Three potential issues are identified from this proposition, which call for further research and academic debate in the AEC and AD communities, laying the conditions for fruitful future interactions between them. On the one hand, the paper proposes that the AEC community can consider AD as a catalyzer to promote integrated design for sustainability. On the other hand, it pushes AD to be adapted to accommodate the needs of a fragmented design industry which often produces one-off design solutions. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
