The use of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is a promising solution in the confinement of RC columns. Based on an experimental campaign on 15 short cylindrical RC columns, this work aims to get a better understanding about the performance of basalt textile in the confinement of short RC columns by comparing basalt and carbon TRC. Furthermore, the impact of mixing short steel fibers in the TRC concrete matrix (F/TRC) is investigated. The test results show that columns confined with basalt textile and carbon textile are, in terms of strength and, to some extent, post-elastic behaviour, comparable. Basalt textile seems to be a valid alternative to carbon, without significant loss of performance, and it provides less environmental impact. Columns reinforced with F/TRC show that adding 2.5 Vol.-% of short steel fibers has a beneficial effect in the confinement. © 2022, fib. The International Federation for Structural Concrete. The digitization and geometric knowledge of the historical built heritage is currently based on point cloud, that rarely or only partially is used as digital twin for structural analysis. The present work deals with historical artefacts survey, with particular reference to masonry structures, aimed to their structural analysis and assessment. In detail, the study proposes a methodology capable of employing semi-directly the original data obtained from the 3D digital survey for the generation of a Finite Element Model (FEM), used for structural analysis of masonry *** methodology described presents a reliable workflow with twofold purpose: the improvement of the transformation process of the point cloud in solid and subsequently obtain a high-quality and detailed model for structural *** the application of the methodology to a case study, the method consistency was assessed, regarding the smoothness of the whole procedure and the dynamic characterization of the Finite Element Model. The main improvement in respect with similar or our previous workflows is obtained by the introduction of the retopology in data processing, allowing the transformation of the raw data into a solid model with optimal balancing between Level of Detail (LOD) and computational weight. Another significant aspect of the optimized process is undoubtedly the possibility of faithfully respecting the semantics of the structure, leading to the discretization of the model into different parts depending on the materials. This work may represent an excellent reference for the study of masonry artefacts belonging to the existing historical heritage, starting from surveys and with the purpose to structural and seismic evaluations, in the general framework of knowledge-based preservation of heritage. © 2021 International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences - ISPRS Archives. This special issue compiles 20 contributions, covering a wide range of latest achievements on dynamical modeling, data-driven algorithms, response predictions, multiple practical applications, and inverse problems. Data science plays a crucial role, helping us constructing more accurate dynamical models that capture and reflect the true dynamical changes of a system. At the same time, data science is also a powerful tool for deriving exact solutions of a system. By integrating it with deep learning algorithms, we are able to effectively predict the system responses and successfully apply this in several applications, such as airfoil flutter, arm musculoskeletal system, financial market, and epidemiology. In addition, inverse problems also occupy a pivotal position. Faced with the existing rich data, how to use data to identify the parameters of the model is still a challenging topic worthy of our continued attention and in-depth exploration.

Confinement of existing RC columns by means of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is a technology developed in recent times. When using TRC as a mean of confinement, basalt textile fabrics are of particular interest due to their mechanical properties combined with low environmental impact. Furthermore, research performed by the Authors shows that the concrete matrix admixed with short dispersed fibres significantly improves the performance of TRC strengthening solutions in general. The addition of short dispersed steel fibres in the concrete matrix leads to a new material called Fibre/Textile Reinforced Concrete (F/TRC). Through an experimental campaign, an investigation about the influence on the confinement of the following two variables was conducted: the material of the textile fabric (basalt and carbon), and the presence of short dispersed steel fibres admixed to the concrete matrix. A total of 15 short cylindrical RC columns were tested under uniaxial compression. The results show that the performances of basalt and carbon textiles used for confinement are comparable, both in terms of strength and, to some extent, of post-elastic behaviour, highlighting the possibility of using basalt as an alternative to carbon without significant performance losses and combined with reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, F/TRC solutions outperformed traditional TRC, showing the beneficial effect of the short dispersed steel fibres to the performance of the strengthened specimens. © Fédération Internationale du Béton – International Federation for Structural Concrete.

Heritage buildings require special attention because of their unique architectural style. Due to the lack of rating systems designed for heritage buildings, this paper presents an assessment tool that considers specific characteristics of heritage buildings. The utilized rating systems worldwide are identified, studied and compared to test their advantages and limitations. As such, a group of attributes is identified to evaluate the current sustainability ratings including site and ecology, material waste reduction, indoor environmental quality, etc. Analytical Hierarchy Process is utilized for interpreting the weights of the attributes. The comparative analysis is carried out using an integrated paradigm that comprises four multi-criteria decision making techniques namely, grey relational analysis, complex proportional assessment, technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution and multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis. Average ranking algorithm is then adopted for the sake of establishing a holistic evaluation of the sustainability rating tools. Results demonstrated that German Sustainable Building Council accomplished the highest ranking while green globe and greenship Indonesia provided the lowest ranking. It was also inferred that these systems failed to deal with heritage buildings. Therefore, it is recommended to develop a system designed specifically for heritage buildings by adjusting related rating systems. It is expected also that the developed model will enable the user to map the main deficiencies in the current sustainability rating systems, which paves way for more comprehensive and efficient rating sustainability heritage rating systems. © 2023, Canadian Society for Civil engineering.

The paper introduces the assessment model of effectiveness of surrogate model for predicting indoor air temperature in buildings using a range of machine learning techniques and optimized data sampling algorithms, with the primary objectives of enhancing prediction accuracy. The main aim is to improve the forecasting accuracy. Among the evaluated models, the SVM demonstrates the highest error rates, as evidenced by its higher mean square error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) values. A negative R2 value also indicates that the SVM model is performing poorly, unable to capture the underlying patterns in the data effectively. In contrast, linear regression performs significantly better, with lower error rates and an R2 value of 0.871, explaining 87.1% of the variance in the data and indicating a strong linear relationship. Gradient Boosting demonstrates excellent performance, with low error rates and a high R2 value of 0.992, which almost completely covers the variance of the data and provides highly accurate predictions. AdaBoost surpasses all other models by achieving the lowest errors. With an R2 value of 0.998, it accounts for 99.8% of the data's variance, making it the most precise model for this dataset. Overall, AdaBoost exhibits the highest accuracy with the smallest error rates and the highest R2 value, with Gradient Boosting coming in second. © 2024 The Authors.

Asymmetric sway panel design for noise reduction by modal radiation efficiency tunning approach

Built-up panels are widely employed for noise reduction, with their effectiveness primarily dependent on transverse vibrations, as corroborated by numerous studies. Transverse vibrations occur perpendicular to the panel's surface and are known for their substantial sound radiation. This study introduces a novel technique for tuning modal radiation efficiency, designed to diminish sound radiation from a sway panel comprised of two vertical and one horizontal segment. Notably, when the primary vibration direction of a panel is parallel to its surface (i.e., sway vibration), both the level of transverse vibrations and the corresponding sound radiation efficiency are significantly reduced. A theoretical model was developed to investigate the interplay between transverse and longitudinal vibrations across adjacent components, shedding light on the sound radiation reduction mechanism. The sway structure exhibited a 43.5 % reduction in maximum transverse displacement compared to a simply supported beam, while the maximum longitudinal displacement was adjusted to align with the transverse displacement levels. Moreover, sway modes, in comparison to simply supported beams, demonstrate reduced radiation efficiency due to their dipole-like sound radiation patterns. Consequently, the maximum sound pressure level of the sway structure was lowered by 7 dB compared to that of the simply supported beam. This model also enables the creation of two sway modes with closely spaced frequencies through precise modifications of lengths and thicknesses, highlighting the significance of asymmetric geometry. Furthermore, comparisons of the proposed model with finite element methods and experimental results confirm a strong concordance, validating the effectiveness of the sway structure in achieving reduced sound radiation. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Quality issues related to the design and construction stage of a project in the Indian construction industry

Purpose: Quality in the construction industry is an important issue yet ignored during the initial stages of the life cycle of a project, that is, the design and construction stage. The contribution of stakeholders, especially the architects is generally suspended though it has huge significance in terms of cost and time related to quality. This research endeavors to examine the issues related to the design and construction stages of the project from architects' purview, to understand the relative importance of these issues in the Indian construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: The study of qualitative data conducted formed a basis for online quantitative data collection that was further analyzed with the help of cross-tabulation and multiple correspondence analysis methods. Findings: The study concludes that the budget of a project is a corresponding factor related to quality concern for architects. The study also established that the quality issues corresponding to high budgets are closely related to the construction stage and are identified as preparation of checklist, and bidding process of hiring the contractor on the lowest bid. Research limitations/implications: The study is limited to analyzing the perspective of architects;however, other stakeholders of the construction industry may represent a different opinion. Practical implications: This research emphasizes the importance of the client's role, and need for integration and coordination among stakeholders in the construction industry for effective quality control and management.
