This paper presents a novel, low cost technique based on implications to identify untestable bridging faults in sequential circuits. Sequential symbolic simulation is first performed, as a preprocessing step, to identify nets which are uncontrollable to a specific logic value. Then, an implication-based analysis is carried out for each fault to determine if a particular fault is testable or not. We also use information about the untestable stuck-at faults to filter out some bridges early in the analysis process. The application of our technique to ISCAS '89 sequential benchmark circuits and a few industrial circuits showed that a large number of untestable bridges could be identified at a low cost, both in terms of memory and execution time.

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is a relatively new development that has found extensive use in areas such as social sciences, economics, biology, ecology etc. Can ABMS be effectively used in finding answers to complex construction systems? Our focus is to provide some answers to this question. Initial experimentation is conducted to understand the advantages of using ABMS either in isolation or in combination with traditional simulation methodologies. We provide a summary of this experimentation, conclusions and sets the agenda for future research in this area.

The potential application of tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) for suppressing wind-induced vibration of long span bridges is explored in this *** installing the TLCD in the bridge deck,a mathematical model for the bridge-TLCD system is *** governing equations of the system are developed by considering all three displacement components of the deck in vertical, lateral, and torsional vibrations,in which the interactions between the bridge deck, the TLCD,the aeroelastic forces, and the aerodynamic forces are fully *** buffeting and flutter analyses are carried *** buffeting analysis is performed through random vibration approach, and a critical flutter condition is identified from flutter analysis.A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the control effectiveness of the damper and it is shown that the TLCD can be an effective device for suppressing wind-induced vibration of long span bridges, either for reducing the buffeting response or increasing the critical flutter wind velocity of the bridge.

This paper proposes novel algorithms for computing test patterns for transition faults in combinational circuits and fully scanned sequential circuits. The algorithms are based on the principle that s@ vectors can be effectively used to construct good quality transition test sets. Several algorithms are discussed. Experimental results obtained using the new algorithms show that there is a 20% reduction in test set size, test data volume and test application time compared to a state-of-the-art native transition test ATPG tool, without any reduction in fault coverage. Other benefits of our approach, viz. productivity improvement, constraint handling and design data compression are highlighted.

In high power inverters and power-factor-correction rectifiers hard switching techniques produce high switching losses, high power dissipation in capacitors and severe conductive EMI. Soft-switching techniques may reduce these problems; in particular zero-current transition techniques are attractive in high power converters, where the minority-carrier devices, such as IGBTs, are the power switches. The aim of this paper is to show theoretical expressions for designing of auxiliary circuit and variable timing control scheme in applications where zero-current transition techniques are used. In order to prove the theoretical approach, extensive analysis is first achieved on the basis of simulation results and then validated on the basis of experimental tests.

Considering video transmission over an ATM network for a video on demand system, we propose a server of quality (SoQ) that has the main function of fitting the video transmission rate to the available network bandwidth. The SoQ uses a "backpropagation" neural network to fit the MPEG quantization coefficients in a nonlinear way. Here are shown the SoQ specification and the results obtained from its main module implementation.

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.
