Over the past few decades, Nigeria has made strides in combating corruption through anti-corruption laws and dedicated institutions. Despite these efforts, concerns persist about the misuse of accepted practices to undermine these laws, particularly in the construction industry. This study examines the impact of bribery on the Nigerian construction sector and the conflicts between social norms and anti-corruption measures. The study reveals an artificial gap between bribery laws and social norms, exploited by individuals with questionable motives to legitimise their actions. Societal expectations often view bribery as necessary for establishing legitimate and socially approved connections. While the cultural practice of gift-giving can enhance performance and efficiency, its association with bribery hinders effectiveness and creates challenges for public procurement officers. Overall, the study highlights the need for a nuanced understanding of cultural practices in anti-corruption efforts and suggests that aligning legal frameworks with social norms is crucial for the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures in Nigeria's construction industry. © Association of Researchers in Construction Management

Under loading and environmental actions, infrastructures undergo continuous aging and deterioration of the constituent materials during their service lifespan. In-situ monitoring the aging and deterioration at material level of infrastructures can provide effective protection and maintenance prior to serious failure, thus enhancing their safety and lifespan as well as resilience. Therefore, self-sensing performance of materials is an important paradigm for updating infrastructures with intelligent digital insights. Concrete, the most widely used engineering material for infrastructure construction, inherently lacks self-sensing property. The incorporation of functional fillers can form a conductive sensory "neural" system inside concrete, thus empowering concrete with the capability to sense stress (or force), strain (or deformation), and damage (e.g., cracking, fatigue) in itself, and also improving (or maintaining) its mechanical properties and durability. The emergence of intrinsic self-sensing concrete has laid a material foundation for realizing in-situ monitoring, contributing to the development of intelligent and resilient infrastructures. This review concisely introduces the significant research progress of research on the composition and preparation, measurement and characterization, performance and control, mechanism and model, and application of intrinsic self-sensing concrete in civil and transportation infrastructures, as well as current challenges and roadmap for its future development. © 2024 The Authors

Toughening mechanisms of fiber-reinforced composites: A micromechanical heterogeneous peridynamic model

Exploring strategies for toughening the fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) is of significant interest for boosting their high-performance applications. A novel micromechanical peridynamic (PD) model incorporating five types of non-local interactions was proposed to unravel the toughening mechanisms for laminated composite materials. This PD model was validated by three examples including the prediction of off-axis modulus of laminates, the cracking of center-cracked laminates and the compact tension test. Diverse experiment-consistent crack patterns were captured. The effects of the mechanical properties of fibers, matrix, their interface and the interlayer interface on the force–displacement curves obtained from compact tension tests were systematically studied. It was found that the major load carrier is the fiber, follow by the fiber–matrix interface, the interlayer interface and the matrix. Results show that the stiffening and strengthening of fiber–matrix interface and interlayer interface can greatly enhance the fracture toughness of the composites. This toughening is resulted from a synergetic improvement of load bearing capacity in the interlayer bonds, fiber–matrix bonds, the fiber bonds and matrix bonds. To leverage this synergetic effect, interface and interlayer enhancement strategies, e.g., brick–mortar structure and the Bouligand structure appeared in biological materials, are highly recommended for designing FRCs with improved toughness. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Traditional heritage architecture is renowned for its unique characteristics, which are shaped by local climatic, social, and construction requirements, as well as specific architectural styles that contribute to a sense of identity and place. Preserving the aesthetic and cognitive values inherent in traditional styles poses a significant challenge compared to other tangible assets. However, the digitization of built heritage offers a proactive approach to conservation. In this regard, the management of heritage building information through Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a crucial role in preventive conservation. The utilization of multi-dimensional digital information models, known as Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM), is one such approach. This study aims to explore the application of HBIM in representing built heritage, focusing specifically on the research gap pertaining to the need for an effective and integrated methodology for modeling information related to heritage urban facades. The objective is to generate parametric models within the framework of HBIM information management, thereby contributing to preventive preservation mechanisms. The methodology employed in this study consists of two main parts. Firstly, information is derived by analyzing the structural characteristics of heritage facades using Shape Grammar. Secondly, the acquired information is utilized to develop a comprehensive library of HBIM for heritage architectural elements. The results of this study demonstrate the proposed methodology's effectiveness in determining heritage urban facades' morphological, mathematical, relational, and Euclidean characteristics. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Experimental Investigation on the Compressive Strength Of Rammed Earth Panels

The use of raw earth in the construction field returns to be of great relevance today, although this building material is one of the oldest. This is due to the need to minimize environmental impacts and the continuous use of building materials based on natural resources. Therefore, it is essential to return to the development of traditional and alternative construction materials and techniques, capable of providing comparable performance in terms of structural properties and durability in the construction field. Rammed earth is an example for various uses, from the construction of load-bearing walls to the use for plasters and *** following article illustrates the use of a determinate raw earth with straw fibers made with local materials from "Altamura" (Italy) to build load-bearing wall panels in rammed earth. The mixture was poured and mechanically constipated inside steel formworks. After curing, axial compression tests were carried out on the panels;the data was later implemented through numerical finite element *** results of the tests showed a fragile mechanical behavior of the material and relatively good tensile and compressive strength values in the context of earth materials. The validation of the model took place through an iterative process that led to the identification of the most suitable conditions to describe this complex *** technique used allows to produce standard products and to overcome the problems of not homogeneity related to manual compaction. © 2022, The Authors. In recent decades, the diffusion of wind farms on the Italian territory has been increasing. This tendency has encouraged the development of techniques for the damage identifying of wind turbines during the operation phase. In this research, we propose a damage identification approach of the of wind turbines based on the results of radar interferometry tests. In particular, we have carried out Ambient Vibration Testing (AVT) of the wind turbine located in the Apulian region and we have identified the modal properties of the wind turbine and of the single blade by means of the radar interferometric technique using three different radar acquisitions. Starting from the experimental results, we have developed numerical simulation models in case of the damage absence and in case of the presence of different damage scenarios to verify the radar interferometer ability to detect the damage (first level of damage detection [1]) and to locate the damage (second level of damage detection [1]). The obtained results are quite promising and encourage further studies on this topic.

Systematic approach to sustainable urban development: reviewing challenges of informal settlements and peri-urban growth in sub-Sahara Africa

This paper systematically reviews scholarly literature on informal settlements in peri-urban areas, with a focus on the interplay of socio-economic, environmental, governance, and built environment factors contributing to their emergence and persistence. Drawing on 10 studies across predominantly sub-Saharan African contexts, the review analyses core variables, methodological designs, theoretical frameworks, and geographical patterns. Findings reveal that socio-economic exclusion, weak institutional coordination, and dual land governance systems significantly drive informality. Customary and religious institutions often mediate land access and conflict resolution, compensating for gaps in statutory urban planning systems. Environmental risks such as poor sanitation, contaminated water sources, and inadequate waste management remain under-addressed. Notably, the review identifies a critical gap in existing research: the limited application of architectural, spatial planning, and design-based strategies for upgrading and integrating informal settlements into the formal urban fabric. Although incremental upgrading has been proposed as a viable intervention, few studies offer context-sensitive, design-led frameworks for implementation. This study calls for interdisciplinary, solution-oriented approaches that blend policy, governance, and architectural insights to ensure inclusive, sustainable urban development. Recommendations emphasise participatory upgrading, improved service delivery, and legal recognition of informal settlements. The findings are relevant for policymakers, planners, designers, and researchers committed to addressing urban informality in sub-Sahara Africa and beyond. © 2025 The Author(s). A novel volume of fluid ghost-cell immersed boundary method for free surface flow interacting with structures

This paper presents a novel volume of fluid ghost-cell immersed boundary (IB) method for two-phase free surface flow interacting with structures. To circumvent the disturbance occurring around the intersection area of the IB and free surface when using the interpolation method for variable reconstruction, the fluid-structure interaction is firstly considered with the orthogonal IB by mimicking the imposition of boundary conditions in the body-conformal grid method. Treatments are subsequently performed to account for the non-orthogonal effect in accurately simulating the FSI, including the newly proposed flux-scaling and IB velocity re-evaluation methods. Further, a variable smoothing process and a flux correction method are adapted to handle moving boundary cases. Based on OpenFOAM, a two-phase flow solver has been developed. Both stationary and moving immersed boundary cases are used for validations. The numerical results reasonably agree with the corresponding laboratory data and other numerical simulation results, demonstrating the disturbance being effectively depressed and the solver’s accuracy in capturing fluid-structure interactions involving free surface flow. The face gear transmission system offers advantages such as high interchangeability, strong load capacity, and effective power distribution, making it suitable for defense applications. The machining accuracy of the face gear grinding machine tool is significantly affected by the geometric and thermal errors, leading to a reduced geometric precision of the machined face gear. The real-time performance and robustness of the geometric and thermal error compensation system are the key to realize the thermal error control. So far, the real-time performance of compensation system is weak, and the robustness is poor. To address the above challenges, the effect of the temperature changes on positioning accuracy is studied. Then the thermal error prediction model is established based on the error mechanism for the linear axis of face gear grinding machine tool. Finally, the digital twin-driven thermal error control system is developed. The thermal error model is embedded into the digital twin-driven geometric and thermal error control system to realize the thermal error compensation of linear axis for face gear grinding machine tool. With the implementation of the digital twin-driven thermal error control system, the left tooth surface error decreased from 21.8 μm to 5.9 μm, and the right tooth surface error decreased from 22.9 μm to 5.7 μm, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2025 The Author(s).
