Potentials for adopting sustainable mixed-income housing in African cities: a bibliometric and systematic review

This paper offers an overview of mixed-income housing in African cities, emphasising its importance, challenges, and potential solutions. As urbanisation increases, mixed-income housing becomes crucial for addressing housing inequality, fostering social inclusion, and promoting sustainable urban development. However, its application in African contexts is under-researched. Through bibliometric analysis and systematic review, the study utilised VOSviewer to examine existing research, identifying publication trends, dominant themes, emerging trends, and mapping out research gaps of mixed-income housing in the African context. The study highlights geographical biases and calls for diverse research settings to understand mixed-income housing complexities across different African cities. The emerging trends further underscore the need for tailored policies, community integration, sustainable financing, and long-term impact assessments. However, gaps remain in understanding environmental sustainability, economic impacts, and community dynamics in mixed-income housing. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research, advocating interdisciplinary collaboration and mixed-method approaches to formulate a comprehensive strategic framework. Addressing these gaps can guide evidence-based policies to promote inclusive, sustainable mixed-income housing in African cities, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering resilient urban futures. © 2024 The Author(s). The construction sector plays a crucial role in Malaysia's socio-economic growth, as high-rise building construction projects contribute approximately 4.7% to 7.2% of the national GDP annually. Despite their importance, project delays continue to present a significant challenge, frequently caused by subpar workmanship, a shortage of labour, ineffective site management, financial limitations, and adverse weather conditions. To capture a diverse range of perspectives from construction professionals, the study used a substantial sample size during data collection, thus bolstering the credibility and applicability of its findings. A carefully designed questionnaire, informed by insights from an initial study, was employed to conduct the survey. The questionnaire consisted of 43 delay factors commonly found in the research literature and seven additional factors from the initial pilot survey. Participants assessed the importance of each delay factor by utilising a 5-point Likert scale ranging from "not significant" to "extremely significant. " The aim was to determine the order and significance of factors causing delays in construction endeavours. Significant findings suggest that a lack of staff, financial challenges, insufficient planning, client approval delays, material scarcity, and ineffective site management primarily cause delays. The challenges have a notable effect on stakeholders, resulting in delays, monetary setbacks, and, in some cases, project rejection. The study emphasises the capability of combining Construction Drone Technology (CDT) with Building Information Modelling (BIM) to address these delays efficiently. The integration significantly improves real-time monitoring, logistics planning efficiency, minimisation of material wastage, and fosters better communication among project teams. In this study, the use of FRP-reinforced UHS-ECC/UHPC as permanent formwork for marine concrete structures was proposed. The mechanical performance of beams with FRP-reinforced permanent formwork were investigated through four-point bending test and beams with same experimental design were prepared to ensure the accuracy of test data. For beams with FRP-reinforced UHS-ECC permanent formwork, it was found that multiple cracking of UHS-ECC facilitate the stress transfer between the formwork layer and the concrete substrate. For beams with FRP-reinforced UHPC permanent formwork, the crack localization occurred in the UHPC layer caused deformation incompatibility at nearby interface, which contributed to reduced stiffness, load capacity and ductility compared with beams with FRP-reinforced UHS-ECC permanent formwork. It was also demonstrated that beams using a 120 mm groove spacing as surface treatment were capable of providing sufficient bond between UHS-ECC and concrete. An analytical investigation was conducted to predict the yield loads and ultimate loads of test specimens, and the prediction error was acceptable. In general, the stiffnesses, yield loads and ultimate loads of beams with FRP-reinforced UHS-ECC/UHPC permanent formwork were comparable to those of control beams, and thus demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed surface preparation method. © 2024, The Authors. A viable approach to obtain mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus and hardness, is testing on a nanoindentation device. Such an experimental procedure can, however, be time-consuming and expensive. Finite element analysis (FEA) can be employed to minimize the number of required measurements, i.e., to obtain numerically the load vs. indentation depth curves for varying input parameters, hence extracting the resulting elasto-plastic material properties. A methodological approach is used in this work to correlate the responses obtained via FEA to nanoindentation experimental data. A (100)-oriented single crystal silicon wafer is used as a testing sample. Numerical simulations are performed by employing a bilinear elasto-plastic material model. A sensitivity analysis of the characteristic parameters of the material model is then conducted on the numerically obtained load vs. displacement curves. The proposed methodology enables replicating the experimental curves with estimated errors lower than 1 % and 15 % for Young’s modulus and hardness, respectively. The performed analyses allow establishing also that, when evaluating numerically hardness, the tip radius and shape significantly affect the accuracy of the results, especially for lower indentation depths. © 2021 Proceedings of the 21st International Conference of the European Society for Precision engineering and Nanotechnology, EUSPEN 2021. Low-frequency ultrasounds, ozone, and combined ultrasounds and ozone processes (called sonozone) were applied in wastewater (WW) disinfection to investigate specific microbial targets inactivation. Urban WW was spiked with Salmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and Pseudomonas spp., and treated for different experimental times. The single ultrasonic application resulted to be not adequate to reach a relevant microbial load reduction at all the considered experimental conditions. The employment of ozone alone, at the concentration of 1.46 mg/L, gave instead remarkable removal rates, being able to reach a 4-Log reduction in 162 s (Pseudomonas spp.), 54 s (Enterococcus spp.), 54 s (E. coli) and 144 s (S. Enteritidis) treatment times respectively. The sonozone treatment at the laboratory scale revealed an increment in the removal effectiveness compared to the single ozone application. An energy and cost-effectiveness assessment was carried out from the perspective of process optimization and economic feasibility. Combined sonozone application resulted in a powerful solution for WW disinfection. Remarkable energy reduction would derive from the utilization of short ultrasound pre-treatments, with peaks of 65% energy saving connected to a maximum decrease of 12.0 €/m3 when sonozone was applied as a substitute for the only ozone treatment. © 2023, The Authors. Prediction of Complex Strain Fields in Concrete Using a Deep Learning Approach

Stress-strain analysis is pivotal in high-performance concrete composite design, which has traditionally relied on experiments and numerical simulations. However, these approaches are inefficient due to the astronomical number of possible combinations. This paper thus proposes a high-efficient surrogate model utilizing generative deep learning (DL) for complex strain field prediction to address this research topic. A dataset containing 2000 samples with randomly distributed geometries and corresponding strain fields is built as ground truth. A DL model is constructed, trained, and validated to capture the intricate geometry-strain relationships within the dataset. The predictions to material properties demonstrate astonishing accuracies of 0.54% MAPE in strain fields and of 0.96 R2 in deformability ranking. Furthermore, the proposed approach offers remarkable adaptability and extensibility to varied geometries and failure modes, supported by real-world tests. This method significantly enhances the efficiency of evaluating concrete physical properties by leveraging the geometry for direct strain field analysis. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Strength and Microstructure Characterization of Hybrid Fiber-Reinforcement on Ultra-High-Performance Mortar Containing Wollastonite Microfibers and Cellulose Nanofibers

This paper presents the effect of incorporating wollastonite microfibers and cellulose nanofibers on mechanical properties and microstructure of ultra-high-performance mortar (UHPM). Cellulose nanofibers of 0.005%, 0.015%, and 0.030% are combined with 4.8% wollastonite microfiber by weight of binder, which is consisted of 10% silica fume and 90% cement. Compressive and flexural strengths of the UHPM specimens are measured at 7 days. The microstructure is characterized in terms of SEM/EDX, XRD, FTIR, and nanoindentation. The results show the effectiveness of the fiber hybridization in enhancing the compressive and flexural strength of ultra-high-performance mortar with the improvement in flexural toughness and fracture energy by as much as 10% than control mortar. Moreover, hybrid fiber-reinforcement based on the microstructural analysis provided more synergic effect and uniform distribution of the fibers, thus developing an efficient micro crack bridging mechanism as well as resulting in enhanced toughening properties and an increased load carrying capacity. Additionally, the combination of wollastonite microfibers and cellulose nanofibers promoted the hydration reaction products and contributed a denser matrix between the fibers and cement matrix, resulting in an increase of the microstructure and interface area between the fibers and cement matrix. Nano indentation analysis also confirmed the increase of UHD C-S-H from 65% to 84% and lower percentage of anhydrous phase in ultra-high-performance matrix after combining wollastonite microfibers and cellulose nanofibers. © 2023, The Authors. In this paper a comprehensive review and analysis on fast charging methods for Li-Ion batteries is reported and assessment of their impact on battery performance addressed. Existing literature proposed and compared several pulse charging strategies, e.g., Positive Pulse Charging (PPC) and Sinusoidal Ripple Current (SRC), with the standard Constant Current Constant Voltage (CCCV) approach, asserting superior outcomes in term charging time, lifetime, and temperature rising. However, it is crucial to highlight that the Electric Vehicles (EVs) typically charge up to 80% to 90% State of Charge (SoC), leading to irrelevant contribution of the CV phase in terms of SoC but heavily contributing to the full charging time, therefore biasing the comparison. A comparative analysis of PPC, SRC against both Constant Current (CC) and CCCV charging methods based on past literatures data and tests is reported here, aiming at highlighting that PC does not significantly impact charging time as compared to CC charging. However, the advantages of PC, including extended battery lifetime, reduced capacity fade, and efficient charging, making it a promising option for the future e-mobility applications. Our evaluation considers several crucial parameters, namely charging time, temperature rise, lifetime, capacity fade, energy efficiency and charge efficiency. Additionally, we considered the practical implementation of pulsed charging strategies with respect to standard ones, considering the challenges and constraints in an actual battery charger. By addressing the feasibility and limitations, our research aims to provide valuable insights for the potential integration of pulsed charging into commercial EV charging infrastructure.
