Despite a substantial body of research—evidenced by our analysis of 2,628 peer-reviewed papers—global building floorspace data remain fragmented, inconsistent, and methodologically diverse. The lack of high-quality and openly accessible datasets poses major challenges to accurately assessing building carbon neutrality. This review focuses on global building floorspace, especially its nexus with energy and emissions. The key research areas include energy modeling, emissions analysis, building retrofits, and life cycle assessments. Each measurement approach—top-down, bottom-up, and hybrid—has its own limitations: top-down methods provide broad estimates but low accuracy, whereas bottom-up approaches are more precise but data intensive. Our simulations reveal a surge in floorspace growth across emerging economies—most notably in India, Indonesia, and Africa—with India’s per capita floorspace projected to triple by 2070. We emphasize the need for a high-resolution global floorspace imagery database to compare energy efficiency, track decarbonization progress, and assess renovation impacts while promoting building sufficiency and accelerating the transition to net-zero building systems. © 2025, CC BY.

Asymmetric sway panel design for noise reduction by modal radiation efficiency tunning approach

Built-up panels are widely employed for noise reduction, with their effectiveness primarily dependent on transverse vibrations, as corroborated by numerous studies. Transverse vibrations occur perpendicular to the panel's surface and are known for their substantial sound radiation. This study introduces a novel technique for tuning modal radiation efficiency, designed to diminish sound radiation from a sway panel comprised of two vertical and one horizontal segment. Notably, when the primary vibration direction of a panel is parallel to its surface (i.e., sway vibration), both the level of transverse vibrations and the corresponding sound radiation efficiency are significantly reduced. A theoretical model was developed to investigate the interplay between transverse and longitudinal vibrations across adjacent components, shedding light on the sound radiation reduction mechanism. The sway structure exhibited a 43.5 % reduction in maximum transverse displacement compared to a simply supported beam, while the maximum longitudinal displacement was adjusted to align with the transverse displacement levels. Moreover, sway modes, in comparison to simply supported beams, demonstrate reduced radiation efficiency due to their dipole-like sound radiation patterns. Consequently, the maximum sound pressure level of the sway structure was lowered by 7 dB compared to that of the simply supported beam. This model also enables the creation of two sway modes with closely spaced frequencies through precise modifications of lengths and thicknesses, highlighting the significance of asymmetric geometry. Furthermore, comparisons of the proposed model with finite element methods and experimental results confirm a strong concordance, validating the effectiveness of the sway structure in achieving reduced sound radiation. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Comparing Critical Safety Communication Factors Among Local and Ethnic Minority Construction Workers

While construction sites feature an increasingly multinational or multicultural workforce, safety communication emerges as a central challenge for safety management, presenting diverse implications for construction workers. It becomes evident that there is no one-size-fits-all safety communication approach among different ethnic groups in the construction industry. This study seeks to address the existing ambiguity surrounding the disparities in perceptions of safety communication factors (SCFs) between local workers and migrant or ethnic minority (EM) workers. The study employs a questionnaire survey conducted targeting both local and EM construction workers on multicultural construction sites. A total of 202 and 134 valid questionnaires were collected from local and EM workers, respectively. Through an investigation and comparison of critical SCFs among different ethnic groups on multicultural construction sites, the study reveals substantial discord. The correlations between local workers and their EM counterparts expose significant disagreements, highlighting noteworthy distinctions in the rankings of SCFs. Notably, the study identifies significant differences between the two groups—local and EM workers—for 23 out of the 36 SCFs examined, emphasizing the need for targeted approaches in addressing safety communication challenges in diverse construction environments. The findings can inform the development of tailored safety communication strategies on multicultural construction sites. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Air pollution and climate change arouse consistent attention of international community. Shipping industry, being one of the most important transport methods, carries more than 80% of the total international trade and has been recognized as a potential source of air pollutant mitigation. In order to reduce emissions of marine traffic, especially in the area of coastal waters, regulations about the quality of marine fuel have been carried out, and the maximum sulphur content allowed for marine fuel becomes increasingly stringent as time goes by. In order to comply with the regulations, shipping has to take various measures, including adopting electric power from shore while berthing. Shore-side electricity, also called cold ironing, refers to the use of electricity from shore side while berthing at the port instead of auxiliary engine. In recent years, shore power has been adopted in an increasing number of ports;in China, most ports are able to provide shore power for ships while berthing. For ships with shore power facilities, the price of shore-side electricity is an element that can influence their choice of port to visit. It is an incentive for ports to lower the power price. This paper tends to investigate what is the best price to maximize the port’s total benefit in the competition with other ports in the same group. Urban redevelopment and decarbonization challenges. An overview from the real estate market perspective

In the light of the recent intentions of the European Union, the issue of decarbonisation has become critically important in the building sector. The coherence between the attention of policy makers towards the issues of decarbonisation and urban regeneration and the higher academic interest can be linked to the current needs of sustainability and the climate objectives . The present review aims to provide a general framework of the state of knowledge on the broad topic, focusing on the investigation of the interrelationships existing between energy retrofit interventions, urban redevelopment and the consequent dynamics of the real estate market. The study has been developed as a systematic analysis of the existing literature on the topic in order to point out the main explored aspects, the geographical contexts, the investigated market segments and the most used methodological approaches. Specifically, 167 papers have been analyzed, whose 44 % investigates the relationship between energy retrofit and real estate market, 39 % explores the link between the urban regeneration and property sector and 17 % points out the effects of dynamics of the real estate market on urban transformation interventions. To summarize some of the most significant data regarding the estimated sample, approximately 75 % of the articles has been published after 2016, around 50 % focuses on the European context, more than half of the papers addresses the residential sector and the majority of the contributions (approximately 70 %) consists of scientific Journal articles. In particular, approximately 50 % explicitly indicates the increase in real estate value resulting from the implementation of an energy retrofit/urban redevelopment intervention. Descending from the above, the review provides a valuable reference to address the subjects involved in building and urban renewal operations towards profitable and effective choices.

Air pollution is an issue that has been widespread concern in all sectors of society. The pollutants, including toxic gases, greenhouse gases, and particulate matters, have permeated every aspect of our daily life and have a negative impact on human health, agriculture, industry, and climate change. Found by hard and thorough search, the human activities account for the majority and the transport sector is one of the most challenging areas, when it comes to abatement of local air pollution. Marine traffic, which covers over 80% of international trade, is mainly powered by cheap fuel oil with high impurities, so it will affect the social welfare of the coastal areas. Various measures that can be adopted to alleviate the problem to customize suitable regulations through research of the emission from shipping should be conducted. Also, the emission evaluation is critical to measure the efficiency of the regulation. Therefore, following the main steps of Ship Traffic Emissions Assessment Model, we summarize an activity-based framework of shipping emission evaluation that takes advantage of data from automatic identification system. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Analyzing road network subsidence and sinkholes is crucial for ensuring urban traffic and people's safety. InSAR technique is a non-contact measurement technique with high spatiotemporal resolution, wide monitoring range, and unaffected by road conditions, which is of great significance for the analysis of deformation hazards of man-made linear infrastructures, such as road networks and high-speed railways. In this study, we adopt 44 Sentinel-1A images from January 2022 to July 2023 to study the deformation of the road network in Longgang District, Shenzhen, China based on PS-InSAR. The road deformation is further analyzed associated with sinkhole information from field investigation. The results show that the deformation rate of the road network is between -38.3 mm/year and 16.9 mm/year, and the correlation coefficient between the top burial depth of the sinkholes and the maximum deformation rate is 0.58.

Red fruit peel is an attractive target for pineapple *** pineapple accessions with distinct red coloration patterns exist;however,the precise molecular mechanism accounting for these differences remains unknown,which hinders the pineapple breeding process from combining high fruit quality with red *** this study,we characterized a transcription factor,AcMYB266,which is preferentially expressed in pineapple peel and positively regulates anthocyanin *** pineapple,Arabidopsis,and tobacco plants overexpressing AcMYB266 exhibited significant anthocyanin ***,transient silencing of this gene led to decreased anthocyanin accumulation in pineapple red ***-depth analysis indicated that variations of AcMYB266 sequences in the promoter instead of the protein-coding region seem to contribute to different red coloration patterns in peels of three representative pineapple *** addition,we found that AcMYB266 was located in a cluster of four MYB genes exclusive to and conserved in Ananas *** this cluster,each was proved to regulate anthocyanin synthesis in different pineapple tissues,illustrating an interesting case of gene subfunctionalization after tandem *** summary,we have characterized AcMYB266as a key regulator of pineapple red fruit peel and identified an MYB cluster whose members were subfunctionalized to specifically regulate the red coloration of different pineapple *** present study will assist in establishing a theoretical mechanism for pineapple breeding for red fruit peel and provide an interesting case for the investigation of gene subfunctionalization in plants.
