On the truth of integral and differential constitutive forms in strain-driven nonlocal theories with bi-Helmholtz kernels for nanobeam analysis

Considering various strain-driven nonlocal theories that apply bi-Helmholtz kernels, prior studies pointed out the ill-posedness of differential forms (DFs). However, a perplexing question persists regarding the clear demonstration of true consistencies of integral forms (IFs). In addition, the role of constitutive boundary conditions (CBCs) in IFs is not well understood. To address these problems, we re-visit the existence of CBCs and evaluate the consistencies of both DFs and IFs. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive analysis for Eringen's nonlocal theory, Eringen's local/nonlocal theory, nonlocal strain-gradient theory, mixture nonlocal strain-gradient theory and local/nonlocal strain-gradient theory with bi-Helmholtz kernels. Our findings indicate that both IFs and DFs in strain-driven pure and mixed nonlocal theories are indeed ill-posed due to overabundance of boundary conditions. Conversely, IFs and DFs in strain-driven local/nonlocal theories, where classical and higher-order terms in IFs are represented in mixed local/nonlocal forms, are well-posed. Furthermore, for well-posed systems, CBCs can be directly derived from IFs and are essential for both IFs and DFs, being explicit in DFs but implicit in IFs. The presence of CBCs is closely tied to IFs and kernels, but is unrelated to DFs. Result verification is provided through illustrative examples of nanobeam analysis. The research presented here is the first attempt to provide theoretical proofs to illustrate the true consistencies of strain-driven nonlocal theories from both differential and integral perspectives to bridge the theoretical gap. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Adaptive thermal comfort refers to the ability that the occupants of a building have to accustom themselves to specific thermal conditions. The notion of human thermal comfort (HTC) is therefore introduced and defined by a simple mathematical equation. In the evaluation process of actual buildings and in the design of new ones, adaptive HTC equations translate into a substantial reduction in energy consumption and maintenance costs to the buildings. Specialised databases provide adaptive HTC equations that are regarded as standard over large geographical areas. However, in particular climate regions, new adaptive HTC equations have to be established. This paper aims to find an HTC equation specific to the Romanian climate (Köppen climate type D – temperate continental climate). In order to achieve that, a field survey was conducted between 2013 and 2014 in several naturally ventilated buildings (two university buildings from Bucharest, a passive office building and a residential house). The input data consist of questionnaire surveys as well as measurements of comfort parameters.

Feature selection plays a critical role in the application of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems. Many methods have been used to solve the feature selection problem, but they model it as a single-objective problem, considering only classification accuracy or number of features. To close this critical gap, we improve the squirrel search algorithm by combining it with the grid method, and propose a Multi-Objective Squirrel Search Algorithm (MOSSA) to solve the feature selection problem in BCI. We conduct experiments on three publicly available motion imagery datasets, and the experimental results reveal the best classification results of the method on dataset 1. The average classification accuracy of dataset 2 is 96.71%, with the number of selected features reduced to 18 on average. The highest classification accuracy of dataset 3 is 83.57% on the training set and 82.86% on the test set. In addition, we compare MOSSA with other algorithms and the results show the superiority of our proposed method in solving the feature selection problem. Finally, we combine MOSSA with an online application of BCI, where subjects visualise controlling the robot to perform the corresponding actions by the left and right hand movements. The average recognition rate of the three subjects is approximately 70%. The solution(s) to issues of electric power availability is a great concern in many places in both underdeveloped and developing countries. A solution to this problem is proposed in the use of the Solar Chimney (SC). In this study the potentials of using the Solar Chimney is analysed as a means of improving the power problem and providing ventilation at the same time in building in Nigeria. The Solar chimney (SC) being a natural flow device that uses solar irradiation to cause buoyancy in flowing air by means of the addition of heat, thereby converting the solar thermal energy of the sun into kinetic energy in the flowing air. The SC had been developed for the purpose of ventilation for over two millennia now, while the SC has also been developed in recent time for power generation. In this study computational analysis was carried out using the ANSYS Fluent CFD package together with a statistical package “Design Expert” to carryout sensitivity analysis to determining the potentials of the SC system for buildings. A 2 3 factorial experiment was simulated and analysed on a 4 m × 4 m × 4 m room. Results revealed by the simulated factorial experiments that the effect of interactions of parametric factors of the SC, chimney height, width and Solar heat flux, were of great importance. The power output from the SC is about 25 W/m 2 , with a channel velocity of 1.5 m/s. The room temperature was maintained as its initial value of 300 K, with an increase in room average velocity to about 1.5 m/s.

Sungai Pinyuh is the largest market in Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan. This area placed between 3 main roads (Pontianak-Mempawah-Bengkayang). It is very strategic as trade and service transit line. From these benefits, there were several negative influences that could reduce the quality of urban environment from lacking of road planning. The purpose of this study is to provide concepts and guidelines for solving various degradation in physical and environmental quality problems, due to uncontrolled development. The research method is qualitative approach with descriptive research reviewing the literature relating to the concept of urban elements to apply to the case. The method focuses on problem-solving by elaborating with the Street Design Guidelines and urban elements. The result are 2 principles, namely integrated corridor and urban green corridor. Both of these concepts are elaborated with the Street Design Guidelines and urban elements by Hamid Shirvani. This principles direct to: 1)composing the rules and spatial planning details, 2)as an operational form to control spatial use, 3)formulating recommendations for building mass and environment system along with main road corridor as the basis for development control guidelines and a sustainable development framework. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Enhancing Mechanical Properties and Global Cooling Potential of Stretchable Daytime Radiative Coolers

Advancements in radiative cooling technology have shown significant progress in recent years. However, the limited mechanical properties of most radiative coolers greatly hinder the practical applications, particularly in the context of human cooling fabrics. In this study, we present the fabrication of facile and stretchable radiative coolers with exceptional cooling performance by utilizing the design of porous radiative coolers as guidelines for developing promising elastomer (SEBS) coolers. Subsequently, we employ a simple electrospinning method to fabricate these coolers, resulting in impressive solar reflectivity (~96.1%) and infrared emissivity (over 95%). During the summer, these coolers demonstrate a maximum temperature drop of ~9.6 K. Additionally, the SEBS coolers exhibit superior hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, with a high strain capacity exceeding 700% and a stress toleration of over 30 MPa, highlighting their potential for application in automobile textiles and cooling fabrics. Furthermore, we evaluate the radiative cooling performance of SEBS coolers using global-scale modeling revealing their significant cooling potential cross various regions worldwide. © 2023, The Authors. Surpassing the two large emission sectors of transportation and industry, the building sector accounted for 34% and 37% of global energy consumption and carbon emissions in 2021, respectively. The building sector, the final piece to be addressed in the transition to net-zero carbon emissions, requires a comprehensive, multisectoral strategy for reducing emissions. Until now, the absence of data on global building floorspace has impeded the measurement of building carbon intensity (carbon emissions per floorspace) and the identification of ways to achieve carbon neutrality for buildings. For this study, we develop a global building stock model (GLOBUS) to fill that data gap. Our study’s primary contribution lies in providing a dataset of global building stock turnover using scenarios that incorporate various levels of building renovation. By unifying the evaluation indicators, the dataset empowers building science researchers to perform comparative analyses based on floorspace. Specifically, the building stock dataset establishes a reference for measuring carbon emission intensity and decarbonization intensity of buildings within different countries. Further, we emphasize the sufficiency of existing buildings by incorporating building renovation into the model. Renovation can minimize the need to expand the building stock, thereby bolstering decarbonization of the building sector. © 2024, CC BY.

Phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of wild potato Solanum bulbocastanum enhance growth of modern potato varieties

Wild potato species harbor a distinctive rhizosphere microbiome relative to their modern counterparts, thus providing a competitive advantage for acquiring phosphorus (P) in their native habitats. Despite this, the effects of transferring phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), recruited from wild potatoes rhizosphere, on modern potato varieties’ performance has not been investigated. Here, it was hypothesized that PSB isolated from wild potatoes could enhance plant growth and solubilization of various P forms when co-inoculated with commercial potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). To test this hypothesis, three bacteria Enterobacter cloacae, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes were isolated from the rhizosphere of the wild potato Solanum bulbocastanum grown under greenhouse conditions and characterized for their P-solubilizing activities. It was found that both individual bacterial species and the consortium of the three bacteria, dissolved organic (i.e., phytin) and inorganic P (i.e., calcium phosphate) in vitro. The bacterial consortium increased dissolved P by 36-fold for calcium phosphate and sixfold for phytin compared to a sterile control and surpassed the effect of each individual PSB strain. To further evaluate the effect of the PSB consortium on plant growth and P use efficiency, the bacteria were co-inoculated on a commercial potato cultivar and amended separately with phytin, calcium phosphate, commercial P fertilizer, or a combination of the three P sources. The results showed an overall increase in total dry biomass and shoot P content in treatments co-inoculated with PSB. Our findings indicate that PSB isolated from wild potatoes and inoculated with modern potato varieties have the potential to enhance yield and nutrient uptake.

Data efficient reinforcement learning and adaptive optimal perimeter control of network traffic dynamics

Existing data-driven and feedback traffic control strategies do not consider the heterogeneity of real-time data measurements. Besides, traditional reinforcement learning (RL) methods for traffic control usually converge slowly for lacking data efficiency. Moreover, conventional optimal perimeter control schemes require exact knowledge of the system dynamics and thus would be fragile to endogenous uncertainties. To handle these challenges, this work proposes an integral reinforcement learning (IRL) based approach to learning the macroscopic traffic dynamics for adaptive optimal perimeter control. This work makes the following primary contributions to the transportation literature: (a) A continuous-time control is developed with discrete gain updates to adapt to the discrete-time sensor data. Different from the conventional RL approaches, the reinforcement interval of the proposed IRL method can be varying with respect to the real-time resolution of data measurements. Approximate optimization methods are carried out to address the curse of dimensionality of the optimal control problem with consideration of the resolution of data measurement. (b) To reduce the sampling complexity and use the available data more efficiently, the experience replay (ER) technique is introduced to the IRL algorithm. (c) The proposed method relaxes the requirement on model calibration in a "model-free" manner that enables robustness against modeling uncertainty and enhances the real-time performance via a data-driven RL algorithm. (d) The convergence of the IRL-based algorithms and the stability of the controlled traffic dynamics are proven via the Lyapunov theory. The optimal control law is parameterized and then approximated by neural networks (NN), which moderates the computational complexity.
