Simple conditions based on generalisations of the Routh-Hurwitz and Mikhailov criteria that ensure the absence of polynomial roots in an RHP sector straddling the positive real semi-axis (S-stability) are presented. In particular, it is shown that S-stability is ensured if the phase variation of a suitable power of the original nth-degree characteristic polynomial is equal to nπ/2, which implies that the zeros of the real and imaginary parts of this power must satisfy an interlacing property similar to the interlacing property satisfied by Hurwitz polynomials according to the classic Hermite-Biehler theorem. The condition can be checked by means of Sturm sequences. Examples show how the proposed methods operate.

Occupational health management in construction industry is becoming more and more *** means of risk identification and factor correlation, this paper studies various factors affecting occupational health management in construction enterprises, and ranks the importance of these factors. This is conducive to the construction enterprises to clarify the important and secondary factors affecting occupational health management, know which aspects can effectively improve the level of occupational safety management, so as to take targeted measures to make up for the shortcomings, improve the efficiency of occupational safety management, and ensure the occupational health and safety of construction personnel.

Numerical simulations on explosion of leaked liquefied petroleum gas in a garage

An explosion while repairing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) taxis in a garage located at the ground level of an old residential building constructed in Hong Kong was reported in 2015. Part of the building structures was damaged with the owners staying inside killed. The cause of explosion is still under investigation, but the explosion source can be due to leaking of LPG fuel or flammable clean refrigerants with LPG. A taxi has over 0.5 kg of refrigerant HFC134a (R134a) stored in the air-conditioning unit. A pressure rise exceeding 21 kPa (or 0.21 bar) due to explosion from a small amount of LPG would give damages to the building. As firefighters are always exposing themselves to the risk of explosion when they are carrying out rescue operation in a gas-filled environment, the explosion overpressure has to be more reliably estimated for working out protection schemes during operation. This garage LPG explosion incident was studied numerically using Computational Fluid Dynamics software FLame ACceleration Simulation (FLACS). Three scenarios of different LPG-air mixture volumes and LPG concentrations were investigated. Dispersion of LPG was simulated first with an ignition taken at a position at the garage centre. Overpressure and temperature rise were predicted using a fine grid system with 1657600 computing cells was employed. Results were compared with numerical predictions using coarse grids of 207200 cells. Discussion and conclusions were made with reference to the threshold value of 21 kPa in overpressure.

Impact of the laminar flame speed correlation on the results of a quasi-dimensional combustion model for Spark-Ignition engine

In the present study, the impact of the laminar flame speed correlation on the prediction of the combustion process and performance of a gasoline engine is investigated using a 1D numerical approach. The model predictions are compared with experimental data available for full- and part-load operations of a small-size naturally aspirated Spark-Ignition (SI) engine, equipped with an external EGR circuit. A 1D model of the whole engine is developed in the GT-Power™ environment and is integrated with refined sub-models of the in-cylinder processes. In particular, the combustion is modelled using the fractal approach, where the burning rate is directly related to the laminar flame speed. In this work, three laminar flame speed correlations are assessed, including both experimentally- and numerically-derived formulations, the latter resulting from the fitting of laminar flame speeds computed by a chemical kinetic solver. Each correlation is implemented within the combustion sub-model, which is properly tuned to reproduce the experimental performance of the engine at full load. Then, the reliability of the considered flame speed formulations is proved at part-loads, even under external EGR operations.

The production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at centre-of-momentum energy of s=13 TeV collected during the LHC Run 2 data-taking period. The measurement is performed by combining the measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors ITS and TPC, covering a pseudorapidity range of |ηγ| © The Author(s) 2025.

The expanding market interest on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) invoked the emphasis on their efficient control and design optimization. The highperformance control of a motor demands the precise identification of several machine parameters, namely the phase resistance (and dead-time effect curve), d - and q -axis inductances or flux vs. current characteristic and the Permanent Magnet flux-linkage magnitude (PM-flux). In this paper a novel technique for the identification of PM-flux, which does not require the use of a mechanical position or speed sensor is presented. The motor is supposed to be free to move or subject to light load. DC current is imposed (close to nominal amplitude) and the current vector is then rotated by a limited amount, forcing rotor to rotate through the same angle. A mathematical model is developed to estimate the PM-flux using measured voltages and currents within this limited rotor movement. The stator resistance estimation and voltage offset error compensation are also included in this implementation. The method requires the knowledge of angular transition of the rotor to estimate the flux rather than its position. For the Surface Mount-PMSM (SM-PMSM), the initial and final rotor position are determined by the direction of DC current vector, while for the Interior-PMSM (IPMSM), HFI methods could be applied, thus eliminating the need of position sensor in either case. Simulation and experimental results provided on a SM-PMSM confirms the validity of the proposed method. The technique can estimate PM-flux with an error lower than 10%.

Probabilistic earthquake scenarios of a historical area in the town of Amatrice

This research aims at studying the effects induced by the seismic sequence occurred in 2016 in the Central Italy. The mainshock recorded, which had a moment magnitude of 6.0, caused substantial damages to several historical centres of different Italian regions. In the paper, the attention is focused on the damage scenario of an urban sector within the old town of Amatrice. Firstly, the Risk-UE method has been applied to characterize the physical vulnerability of the construction types detected there. Finally, a probabilistic scenario analysis has been performed to estimate the damages of the examined sector deriving from the occurred earthquake, which has been compared to that deriving from the design spectrum at the Life Safety limit state contemplated in the current Technical Italian code (NTC 2018).

Seismic Assessment and Retrofit Design of a School Building in Florence

The recent earthquakes occurred in Italy highlighted again the high vulnerability of structures built before the release of national Seismic Standards. This induced several local authorities to undertake extensive performance assessment campaigns of public buildings, among which mainly schools. A study carried out within one of these campaigns, concerning the evaluation of seismic vulnerability and the design of retrofit interventions in a school building in Florence, is presented herein. The structure was built at the beginning of 1970s, and is characterized by a ground storey with reinforced concrete frame skeleton, and a first and second storey with steel structure. An extensive on-site experimental investigation was developed at a first step of the study, which allowed identifying the mechanical characteristics of the constituting materials, and re-drawing the main structural details. Based on these data, a check of the seismic performance in current conditions was carried out, which highlighted several drawbacks, especially concerning the steel members. This prompted to propose a seismic retrofit hypothesis of the building, consisting in the installation of a set of dissipative braces incorporating fluid viscous dampers as protective devices. A synthesis of the assessment analyses in current conditions and the retrofit design, which allows attaining an elastic structural response up to the maximum considered earthquake level, is reported in the paper.

In situ renewable energy production is a favourable alternative for reducing pollu-tion and combating climate *** research area,Cuenca,Ecuador,is located in the Andes near the equator with optimal conditions for energy self-supply due to its low energy demands and low levels of irradiation *** this study,tem-porary fluctuations in consumption based on 2016 electricity consumption data are *** GIS,available roofing polygons are obtained,and the amount of usable solar radiation is estimated based on these *** available surface,orientation,and inclination information,electricity generation based on photovoltaic performance is estimated and compared for monocrystalline silica panels and pho-tovoltaic solar roof tiles,which are architectural alternatives.A potential net supply of 148%is found for monocrystalline silica photovoltaic panels in a typical format,whereas that of photovoltaic tiles is only 61%.In addition,production-demand imbalances are predicted in extreme months and average months and on extreme days due to variations in irradiation and demands.

We consider the identification of a single open crack in a uniform elastic cantilever with elastic support of unknown stiffness by minimal resonant frequency data. The damage is modelled by inserting a localized flexibility at the cracked cross-section. The flexibility of the end constraint and the additional flexibility induced by the crack are assumed to be small and of the same order of smallness. We establish conditions for the unique identification of the position and severity of the crack and of the stiffness of the elastic support in terms of the first three resonant frequencies of either the axial or the bending vibrations. Numerical simulations support the theory. © 2017 International Center for Numerical Methods in engineering. All rights reserved.
