The non-smooth contact dynamics method for the analysis of an ancient masonry tower

The dynamics of a medieval tower, inside the Basilica of San Benedetto in Ferrara (Italy), subjected to transversal dynamic loadings has been analyzed by using a distinct element code which implements the Non-Smooth Contact dynamics method. Since the contact between blocks is governed by the Signorini’s impenetrability condition and the dry-friction Coulomb’s law, the tower exhibits discontinuous dynamics. The sliding motions of blocks are non-smooth functions of time. Numerical simulations are performed with the aim of investigating the influence of the friction coefficient but also of the amplitude and frequency of the excitation at the base.

This paper deals with a general Multi-Day Container Drayage Problem (MDCDP) that consists in assigning trucks to container transportation orders during several days. To this aim, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming problem is formulated: the model describes real problems taking into account the orders to be planned for several days, the types of the containers and the rest periods of drivers. In order to address real scenarios, a heuristic algorithm based on the rolling horizon approach is proposed. Some randomly generated MDCDP instances validate the heuristic algorithm and a case study of real dimensions shows the effectiveness of the proposed solution technique.

This contribution specifies a cloud based cooperative Decision Support System (DSS) that aims at integrating logistics management and decision support strategies for Intermodal Transportation Systems. The proposed DSS is dedicated to synchronize different transportation means by using the modern Information and Communications Technology tools and by taking into account environmental aspects. The paper describes the DSS cloud based architecture and presents the procedure to be followed in order to design a DSS able to support Decision Makers in different logistic decision fields.

The pT-differential cross section of ω meson production in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, covering an unprecedented transverse-momentum range of 1.6 < pT < 50 GeV/c. The meson is reconstructed via the ω → π+π−π0 decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporating ω fragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. The ω/π0 ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples the pT ranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio of Cω/π0 = 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the systematic and statistical uncertainties.

This work has been developed among the researches of a PhD thesis in Civil and Environmental engineering and architecture of the University of Udine in cooperation with the GECO Laboratory of the University of Florence. It focuses on the interaction between Geomatics and Structural Analysis, both applied to cultural heritage, and expressly to artefacts and structures in stone materials, like the case study of this paper, the marble statue called "San Giovannino Martelli" (Saint John the Baptist) conserved in Florence. At the beginning, some interesting examples of surveying and structural analyses on statues are reported, in order to remind the complementary tasks and requirements of geomatics and structural analysis. Current laser scanning systems can accurately survey the geometry of a statue or any cultural heritage artefact, essential to understand their structural behaviour and resilience capability. Afterwards, following the few Italian regulations in this field, the possible risks of museum goods are described: Topics of this part are more familiar for structural engineers as object classification, seismic reactions, damage mechanisms, possible movements (adherent, slipping and oscillation), dynamic domains, anyway necessary steps to evaluate the risk and so to define eventual interventions. The artistic description of the statue, its debated attribution to Donatello or/and to Desiderio da Settignano and its history is later recalled, remembering that the surveying has been done for the idea to 3D print a replica and to place it in the original place. Having used a close range laser scanner, the obtained 3D model has an impressive geometrical Level of Detail (LoD), whose geometric features are explained in the paper, underlying that such extremely detailed mesh is directly given as output from the laser scanner software. This paper presents the results of a series of compression tests on FRP-confined concrete that was cast with seawater or sea-sand or both. A total of 48 standard concrete cylinders were tested in four series: reference normal concrete, sea-sand concrete, seawater concrete and seawater/sea-sand concrete. The concrete cylinders were either unconfined or confined with a 1-ply or 2-ply CFRP jacket. The unconfined specimens were tested at ages of 7 and 28 days and the confined specimens were tested at the age of 28 days. The test results show that concrete made with seawater and/or sea-sand developed a higher strength than normal concrete at the ages of 7 and 28 days. The test results also show that the four types of concrete have similar stress-strain behavior when confined with FRP;the use of seawater and sea-sand does not appear to have a significant effect on the effectiveness of FRP confinement. © 2017 APFIS. Urban forests are critical for climate adaptation and liveability, but effective irrigation management—key to their sustainability—remains poorly documented at the global scale. This study addresses this critical knowledge gap by analysing urban forest irrigation practices across 109 cities in 21 countries, offering one of the first global assessments of irrigation approaches, challenges, and opportunities. Using survey data, we examined water sources, irrigation frequency, constraints, and enabling conditions. Our results show that weather conditions were the leading factor influencing irrigation scheduling in 44 % of cities, while 56 % reported no formal water restrictions. Despite the importance of water conservation, 55 % of respondents reported having no water usage monitoring systems, and 73 % lacked financial incentives to promote water-efficient irrigation. A large majority (80 %) did not use recycled wastewater, and 58 % did not conduct water quality testing. Only 15 % of cities regularly used water-efficient irrigation technologies, and 47 % had no plans to implement smart systems. Over half (56 %) rated their current irrigation practices as only moderately successful. Budget constraints and infrastructure limitations were the most frequently reported challenges, followed by climate change-related concerns. While environmental variables such as mean annual temperature and irrigation need influenced specific practices, local governance and institutional actions had stronger effects. Cities in the Global South reported distinct strategies and constraints compared to those in the Global North. Our findings provide actionable insights for climate-resilient urban water strategies and underscore the need for targeted policies, capacity-building, and efficient technologies to enhance urban forest sustainability worldwide. © 2025 The Author(s)

In this paper we present a comparison of different model order reduction techniques for flexible multibody dynamics. In particular, we adopt a formulation based on a Equivalent Rigid-Link System (ERLS). This approach is suitable in the case of large displacements and small elastic deformations and it allows the kinematic equations of motion to be decoupled from the compatibility equations of the displacements at the joints. The ERLS approach, recently extended through a modal formulation, is here implemented in combination with different reduction techniques, i.e. Craig- Bampton, Interior Mode Ranking (IMR), Guyan, Least Square Model Reduction (LSMR) and Mode Displacement Method (MDM). In order to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the different methodologies, these techniques are applied to a benchmark mechanism under different input conditions, i.e. gravitational force and step torque input. The accuracy of each reduced model is numerically evaluated through the comparison of computational time, the behaviour in frequency domain and by means of vector correlation methods, i.e. Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), Cross-Orthogonality (CO) and Normalized Cross-Orthogonality (NCO). © 2017 International Center for Numerical Methods in engineering. Noise in offices is related to an employee's comfort, health and productivity. This paper has briefly reviewed two recent works on office productivity. For the work of Mak and Lui, a seven-part questionnaire survey was conducted. Two hundred and fifty-nine office workers in thirty-eight air-conditioned offices in Hong Kong were recruited to participate in this survey. It was found that sound and temperature were the principal factors affecting office productivity. The most irritating noises were conversations, ringing phones and machines. The study also revealed that the environment mattered least to the younger participants. An extended analysis revealed that the female workers were found to be more sensitive to the environmental and office design factors including office layout, temperature and sound and the office should be more carefully designed especially for the female office workers. For the work of Kang et al., a questionnaire analysis was based on survey responses collected from two hundred and thirty-one people who were working in university open-plan research offices (UOROs) from nineteen universities in China. The results showed a clear picture of how office productivity was affected by the key IEQ aspects (such as acoustic environment) and how these key IEQ aspects were affected by their sub-factors (such as conversation noise).

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, $$\textrm{J}/\psi $$ , $$\psi \mathrm{(2S)}$$ , $$\Upsilon \mathrm (1S)$$ , $$\Upsilon \mathrm{(2S)}$$ , and $$\Upsilon \mathrm{(3S)}$$ , measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ( $$2.5< y < 4$$ ). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum ( $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ ) and rapidity ( $$y$$ ) differential cross sections for $$\textrm{J}/\psi $$ , $$\psi \mathrm{(2S)}$$ , $$\Upsilon \mathrm (1S)$$ , and the $$\psi \mathrm{(2S)}$$ -to- $$\textrm{J}/\psi $$ cross section ratios are presented. The integrated cross sections, assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: $$\sigma _{\textrm{J}/\psi }$$ ( $$p_{\textrm{T}} <20$$ GeV/c) = 5.88 ± 0.03 ± 0.34 $$ ~\mu $$ b, $$\sigma _{\psi \mathrm{(2S)}}$$ ( $$p_{\textrm{T}} <12$$ GeV/c) = 0.87 ± 0.06 ± 0.10 $$~\mu $$ b, $$\sigma _{\Upsilon \mathrm (1S)}$$ ( $$p_{\textrm{T}} <15$$ GeV/c) = 45.5 ± 3.9 ± 3.5 nb, $$\sigma _{\Upsilon \mathrm{(2S)}}$$ ( $$p_{\textrm{T}} <15$$ GeV/c) = 22.4 ± 3.2 ± 2.7 nb, and $$\sigma _{\Upsilon \mathrm{(3S)}}$$ ( $$p_{\textrm{T}} <15$$ GeV/c) = 4.9 ± 2.2 ± 1.0 nb, where the first (second) uncertainty is the statistical (systematic) one. For the first time, the cross sections of the three $$\Upsilon $$ states, as well as the $$\psi \mathrm{(2S)}$$ one as a function of $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ and $$y$$ , are measured at $$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ TeV at forward rapidity. These measurements also significantly extend the $$\textrm{J}/\psi $$ $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ reach and supersede previously published results. A comparison with ALICE measurements in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 2.76$$ , 7, 8, and 13 TeV is presented and the energy dependence of quarkonium production cross sections is discussed. F
