Mathematics plays a pivotal role in science, technology and engineering. It is one of the compulsory subjects to gain admission into a higher institution in Nigeria. Considering its importance, students' performance has been a significant concern for most educators, government, parents and guardians. This study aims to predict students' performance in mathematics using the K-fold approach to support effective decision-making and policy implementation on mathematics. The primary dataset was collected from 192 senior secondary schools, and one mathematics student was randomly selected from five Senior Secondary Schools in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, and used as a sample. Students' Mathematics Achievement Test (SMAT) was used as the instrument to collect data. The data was processed and modelled using the Python Programming language. Thus, five machine learning models were trained and evaluated to overcome overfitting using four-, five - -, and six-fold K-Fold cross-validation techniques. Five folds performed best for all the models except for the Support Vector Regressor, which performed best with six folds. The evaluation of the models showed that the Light Gradient Boosting Model outperformed others with a Mean Absolute Error of 12.642 and a Root Mean Square Error of 15.894. The models were significantly influenced by the students' personal study time, friends' assistance, and the parents' educational background. It is therefore recommended that academic researchers, educational authorities in Nigeria, and relevant stakeholders use and improve on this model to predict the students' scores and assist them in achieving great performance in mathematics. © 2024 IEEE.

This study investigates the controller types and effects of the design techniques on gimbal stabilization. Since implementing the controllers and determining the system's robustness is straightforward, the frequency domain design approaches are widely used with linear controllers in electro-optical inertial stabilized systems. Besides, the required system models can be obtained from experimental data easily. Nevertheless, the system model could change in the operational conditions. Therefore, nonlinear controllers are needed in this situation. In this investigation, we obtained a proper system model using system identification methods to design a mixed-sensitivity H∞ controller. Then, we proposed an input-output feedback linearization controller with a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) based state feedback controller design to stabilize the 2 degrees of freedom (DOF) gimbal. Finally, we compared these two controllers regarding reference tracking, sensitivity function, and disturbance rejection performances on the experimental setup under 6 DOF disturbance profiles. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a partially double pass configuration in serial hybrid fiber amplifier is experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed design, a double pass erbium gain and single pass Raman gain are achieved serially. A total pump power of 450 mW (400 mW for 1495 nm Raman amplifier and 50 mW for1480 nm in erbium amplifier) were used. At -30 dBm input signal power and optimum pumps conditions, the achieved flatness bandwidth is 80 nm (1530-1610 nm) in the conventional and long bands (C+L) bands. In addition, the obtained average gain level is 33 dB. While the obtained flatness gain is 85 nm (1525-1610 nm) within the large input signal power region at -5 dBm. By choosing a proper pump wavelength that avoid the overlapping between Raman and erbium peaks gain, a wide flatness gain is obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

Differential signals are key in control engineering as they anticipate future behavior of process variables and therefore are critical in formulating control laws such as proportional-integral-derivative(PID).The practical challenge,however,is to extract such signals from noisy measurements and this difficulty is addressed first by *** in the form of linear and nonlinear tracking differentiator(TD).While improvements were made,TD did not completely resolve the conflict between the noise sensitivity and the accuracy and timeliness of the *** two approaches proposed in this paper start with the basic linear TD,but apply iterative learning mechanism to the historical data in a moving window(MW),to form two new iterative learning tracking differentiators(IL-TD):one is a parallel IL-TD using an iterative ladder network structure which is implementable in analog circuits;the other a serial IL-TD which is implementable digitally on any computer *** algorithms are validated in simulations which show that the proposed two IL-TDs have better tracking differentiation and de-noise performance compared to the existing linear TD.

Metaheuristic optimization algorithms present an effective method for solving several optimization problems from various types of applications and *** metaheuristics and evolutionary optimization algorithms have been emerged recently in the literature and gained widespread attention,such as particle swarm optimization(PSO),whale optimization algorithm(WOA),grey wolf optimization algorithm(GWO),genetic algorithm(GA),and gravitational search algorithm(GSA).According to the literature,no one metaheuristic optimization algorithm can handle all present optimization *** novel optimization methodologies are still *** Al-Biruni earth radius(BER)search optimization algorithm is proposed in this *** proposed algorithm was motivated by the behavior of swarm members in achieving their global *** search space around local solutions to be explored is determined by Al-Biruni earth radius calculation method.A comparative analysis with existing state-of-the-art optimization algorithms corroborated the findings of BER’s validation and testing against seven mathematical optimization *** results show that BER can both explore and avoid local *** has also been tested on an engineering design optimization *** results reveal that,in terms of performance and capability,BER outperforms the performance of state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimization algorithms.

Drug repurposing, also known as drug repositioning, is the process of identifying novel therapeutic indications for existing drugs, offering a cost-effective and time-efficient strategy to drug discovery. In this context, we developed a network-based algorithm, named SAveRUNNER (Searching off-lAbel dRUg aNd NEtwoRk), which predicts drug-disease associations by accounting for the interaction between the drug targets and disease-associated genes in the human interactome, implementing a novel network-based similarity measure that prioritizes associations between drugs and diseases locating in the same network neighborhoods. Following its successful applications to different disorders (such as viral infections and neurological diseases), in this study, we applied SAveRUNNER on a panel of 13 types of cancers using both disease-associated genes downloaded from widely-used databases and from gene expression data. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies of autonomous power supply sources formed according to the 'internal combustion engine-induction generator' scheme. Autonomous local sources of energy supply according to this scheme are formed from existing electromechanical and electrotechnical equipment of other functional purposes only for the period of electricity demand. Such sources of electricity are universal for welding and other technological equipment of military and civil, including agricultural, machinery. According to the results, the viability of the proposed concept of creating autonomous power supply sources based on motor vehicles and electrical equipment has been proven. The limits of guaranteed excitation and subsequent trouble-free operation of autonomous local sources of power supply with power to consumers of various categories have been established. © 2022 IEEE.

On Space-Filling Input Design for Nonlinear Dynamic Model Learning: A Gaussian Process Approach

While optimal input design for linear systems has been well-established, no systematic approach exists for nonlinear systems, where robustness to extrapolation/interpolation errors is prioritized over minimizing estimated parameter variance. To address this issue, we develop a novel identification-oriented space-filling input design strategy for efficient covering of a well-defined region of interest. By placing a Gaussian Process (GP) prior on the joint input-state space, the proposed strategy leverages the GP posterior variance to construct a space-filling promoting input design cost function from the Bayesian point of view. This accordingly enables maximization of the coverage in the region of interest, thereby facilitating the generation of informative datasets. Furthermore, we theoretically prove that minimization of the cost function indicates the space-filling behavior. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated on both an academic example and a mass-spring-damper system, highlighting its potential practical impact on efficient exploration in identification scenarios for nonlinear dynamical systems. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Platoon-Local Dynamic Map: Hierarchical cooperative perception for platooning vehicles

Onboard perception systems found on modern vehicles generate data that are incredibly rich in contextual information, and thanks to the increasing number of vehicles equipped with communication capabilities, the valuable data generated can be shared with nearby vehicles. One of the most studied vehicular applications for autonomous driving is platooning, for which all maneuvers are managed by the Platoon Leader (PL) with the aid of context information available through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) messages. However, redundant context information from nearby vehicles in the platoon creates an additional workload for the platoon leader resulting in elevated computational costs. To overcome the challenge of redundant context information, the formation of vehicular micro-clouds can offload the platoon leader by enabling vehicles in a cluster to more effectively utilize the available context data through collective data processing and aggregation. The proposed solution, called Platoon Local Dynamic Map (P-LDM), creates a single database of context information, distributing the data aggregation load among all members of the platoon. Simulation results evaluate the collective perception enhancement and the distribution of the computational load, comparing the proposed scheme with usual Cooperative Perception mechanisms. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

The exponential growth of academic publications has made scholarly research recommender systems indispensable tools for researchers. These systems rely on diverse evaluation metrics to assess their effectiveness and relevance. This paper provides a comprehensive review and analysis of these metrics, categorizing them into accuracy, ranking, diversity, user-centric, coverage, temporal, and computational metrics. By employing a mixed-methods approach, combining systematic literature review and empirical analysis, we identify the prevalence and application of these metrics across various scholarly domains such as literature, conferences, and reviewers. Our findings highlight the widespread use of traditional metrics like precision, recall, and Fl-score, while emphasizing the growing importance of novel metrics such as unexpectedness and serendipity, especially in literature and conference recommendations. We also underscore the domain-specific nature of metric selection, with user-centric evaluations more prominent in literature recommendations, and ranking-focused metrics dominant in conference and reviewer recommendations. Furthermore, the study reveals a significant gap in the use of temporal and computational metrics, suggesting key areas for future research. This review offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners, guiding them in metric selection and highlighting potential directions for enhancing the effectiveness, adaptability, and user satisfaction of scholarly recommender systems.
