We consider improving the performance of communications over unknown channels with unknown frequency offsets. In lieu of the commonly suggested double differential (DD) modulation/detection, we consider single differential (SD) modulation/detection. We propose an approach that first estimates and compensates for the frequency offset and then detects using an existing multiple symbol detector for SD modulation. We introduce a simple data-symbol-independent frequency offset estimation method, which is reasonably accurate when using a data block larger than the one used for detection. Simulation results show that the SD modulation/detection approach proposed herein can significantly outperform the DD modulation/detection schemes.

This paper studies the noise reduction design problem for oversampled filter banks (FBs) with perfect reconstruction (PR) constraint. Both the optimal design and worst case design are considered, where the former method caters for the noise with known power spectral density (PSD) and the latter one for the noise with unknown PSD. Explicit formulae involving only algebraic Riccati equation and matrix manipulations are provided for the general (IIR or FIR) oversampled PR FBs

In this paper, we present an explicit and numerically efficient formulae to construct a tight (paraunitary) FB frame from a given un-tight (non-paraunitary) FB frame. The derivation uses the well developed techniques from modern control theory, which results in the unified formulae for generic IIR and FIR FBs. These formulae involve only algebraic matrix manipulations and can be computed efficiently and reliably without the approximation required in the existing literature

In this work we realized the method multistage mixing of speech signals and conducted the series of computational experiments at wav-files. As a result of experiments we received dependences time of mixing speech signals, which are contained in wav-files, from amount wav-files and their descriptions. We formed requirements to the speech signals, that mixed accordant with the method of multistage mixing, which allow decreasing time of mixing of speech signals.

The paper presents an analysis of human reaching movements in the manipulation of flexible objects. Two models, the minimum hand jerk and the minimum driving force-change, are derived and their basic features are analyzed. It is shown that the first model features two-phased hand velocity profiles, while in the second models there are multiple phases. The analysis of the phase transitions for the models considered is done in the analytical form. The results of this analysis can be helpful in the design of experimental scenarios for the verification of the theoretical models. Finally, we present some initial experimental results and analyze the applicability of the models developed in this paper

All electric ship alternators are connected to a main busbar which feeds all shipboard electric loads. To fulfill power quality requirements of the resulting electrical system, high-performance control of busbar voltage and frequency is needed. Such a task is not of easy accomplishment, due to the complexity of shipboard power station (generators are many and differ by sizes, prime movers, controlsystems, etc.) and to the intrinsic weakness of the shipboard grid. In this frame, a key power quality issue is voltage control. This paper presents an innovative shipboard voltage and VAR integrated regulator (WIRE). The WIRE controls main busbar voltage and jointly optimizes the reactive power generated by each alternator. It is designed to be interfaced with onboard automation and to realize the integrated management of all reactive power sources (rotating, capacitive, static). Furthermore it satisfies naval requirements as redundancy and fast commissioning

Conditions on input signals are derived that characterize their probing richness for system identification using binary-valued observations. Identification configurations in open-loop, filtering, and feedback systems are discussed together with different scenarios of noises including actuator noise, input measurement noise, and output measurement noises. In addition to system parameter estimation, identifiability and sufficient excitation conditions are also derived under unknown threshold and noise distributions

Repetitive processes propagate information in two independent directions and are of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard (termed ID here) or 2D systems theory. Here we give new results on the design of physically based feedforward/feedback control laws to achieve desired performance and disturbance decoupling in the sense defined in the body of the paper. The new results are for the case when only output (as opposed to state) information is used to activate the control law
