It is well known that nowadays children tend to spend lot of time playing games on mobile devices at the expense of reading books. The current research aims to explore ways to design and develop a mobile application, attractive for children, that uses voice recognition technology and gamification techniques to help children read more and better and to track the progress of reading. The application is implemented with Flutter, Dart and Firebase and is addressed to children, the books being made available in encyclopedia format. By integrating technologies such as NLP and gamification the application aims to improve reading fluency among children, but also to give them the opportunity to accumulate new and exciting information in the same time.

Energy communities are emerging entities which need their own Information and Communication System. Resilience is a key metric of such communities, and it has to be implemented for both energy supply versus public network outages and for its information system versus cyber-attacks, acting as cyber-citadels which have to resist external malicious attacks while having also digital interactions with external entities. The paper presents solutions for a resilient energy community with appropriate implementations of digital interaction for data exchange, in order to acquire external energy service for specialized companies and to deliver also information and communication-related services for external users. Principles of a Contractual Data Protection Regulation are presented, as an adaptation of data protection tailored for automated energy services and based on secure data exchange. The principles are verified in a demonstration project which has also external entities with digital interaction. © 20XX IEEE.

In this paper, a novel control strategy based on model predictive control is proposed for tracking the trajectory of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). First, the dynamic model of an unmanned aerial vehicle UAV is established by considering the linear velocities in terms of the analyzed system's attitude angles. The UAV's dynamic model is suitable for kinematic control by using two attitude angles as control inputs. The controller design is made up of an output feedback controller formed by the error variables, which are the difference between the measured output and the reference variables. Then, a model predictive control is established by considering an optimization problem with a performance index and the corresponding constraints. Furthermore, the stochastic properties of the UAV dynamic model are taken into account in this research study. The measured outputs provided by the sensors are constrained by the topological characteristics of the unmanned aerial vehicle to be analyzed. Finally, a numerical experiment and its conclusions are presented, demonstrating that the proposed control strategy provides optimal trajectory tracking. © 2022 IEEE.

Federated learning provides clients with a means of collaboratively training a global model without sharing their local data, managed by a central server. However, this server cannot always be trusted, as it may act dishonestly and compromise the privacy of clients’ local data. Consequently, mechanisms for privacy preservation and aggregation verification become crucial components of a secure federated learning system. In addition, support for weighted aggregation is also essential to address the challenges posed by non-IID training data. In this article, we present the Privacy-Preserving and Verifiable Weighted Aggregation (PVWA) scheme. Our approach introduces a new privacy-preserving solution by leveraging masking and homomorphic encryption techniques to protect local and global models, respectively. The masking protocol facilitates secure weighted aggregation, whereas a verification mechanism based upon homomorphic hashing and bilinear aggregated signatures ensures the correctness of aggregated results. Experimental evaluations of the performance, compared against alternative methods on two datasets, demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency.

This paper proposes a method to navigate a mobile robot by estimating its state over a number of distributed sensor networks (DSNs) such that it can successively accomplish a sequence of tasks, i.e., its state enters each targeted set and stays inside no less than the desired time, under a resource-aware, time-efficient, and computation-and communication-constrained setting. We propose a new robot state estimation and navigation architecture, which integrates an event-triggered task-switching feedback controller for the robot and a two-time-scale distributed state estimator for each sensor. With the controller, the robot is able to accomplish a task by following a reference trajectory and switch to the next task when an event-triggered condition is fulfilled. With the estimator, each active sensor is able to estimate the robot state. We provide conditions to ensure that the state estimation error and the trajectory tracking deviation are upper bounded by two time-varying sequences, respectively. Furthermore, we find a sufficient condition for accomplishing a task and provide an upper bound of running time for the task. Numerical simulations of an indoor robot’s localization and navigation are provided to validate the proposed architecture

Obesity is a complex multifactorial disorder characterized by the excess accumulation of body fat that impairs human health due to the risk of developing other diseases, including cardiovascular and hepatic diseases, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia. Its spread has been progressively accelerating, resulting in an unprecedented epidemic with no significant signs of slowing down any time soon. Drug therapy via the proposal repurposing solutions can represent an actionable treatment strategy, even if the emergence of drug-induced adverse effects can affect the treatment of this pathology. In this study, we propose a network-based analysis to identify a list of drug candidates predicted to be repurposable for obesity that are unlikely to produce specific adverse side-effect, such as hepatic steatosis.

Dissecting the intricate regulatory dynamics between genes stands as a critical step towards the development of precise predictive models within biological systems. A highly effective strategy in this pursuit involves an examination of variations in correlation among gene pairs across different conditions trough differential gene correlation analysis. We anticipated that the application of this method to phylogenetically close plant species could reveal powerful insights on how genes’ relationships have a fundamental role in evolutionary dynamics. Building upon this principle, our investigation focused primarily on conducting a comprehensive differential correlation analysis of the roots’ orthologous genes of two closely related plant species: Cardamine hirsuta and Arabidopsis thaliana. By leveraging their shared phylogenetic proximity, we were able to draw comparisons that shed light on how evolutionary pressures might have shaped their gene regulatory networks. By integrating differential expression analysis, differential correlation analysis and functional enrichment analysis, we offer a robust framework for future studies aiming to unravel the complexities of adaptation and evolution across a wide range of biological systems.

Multi-objective optimization determines when, which and how to fuse deep networks: an application to predict COVID-19 outcomes

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of cases and deaths and the AI-related scientific community, after being involved with detecting COVID-19 signs in medical images, has been now directing the efforts towards the development of methods that can predict the progression of the disease. This task is multimodal by its very nature and, recently, baseline results achieved on the publicly available AIforCOVID dataset have shown that chest X-ray scans and clinical information are useful to identify patients at risk of severe outcomes. While deep learning has shown superior performance in several medical fields, in most of the cases it considers unimodal data only. In this respect, when, which and how to fuse the different modalities is an open challenge in multimodal deep learning. To cope with these three questions here we present a novel approach optimizing the setup of a multimodal end-to-end model. It exploits Pareto multi-objective optimization working with a performance metric and the diversity score of multiple candidate unimodal neural networks to be fused. We test our method on the AIforCOVID dataset, attaining state-of-the-art results, not only outperforming the baseline performance but also being robust to external validation. Moreover, exploiting XAI algorithms we figure out a hierarchy among the modalities and we extract the features' intra-modality importance, enriching the trust on the predictions made by the model. Resource allocation and scheduling in multi-agent systems present challenges due to complex interactions and decentralization. This survey paper provides a comprehensive analysis of distributed algorithms for addressing the distributed resource allocation (DRA) problem over multi-agent systems. It covers a significant area of research at the intersection of optimization, multiagent systems, and distributed consensus-based computing. The paper begins by presenting a mathematical formulation of the DRA problem, establishing a solid foundation for further exploration. Real-world applications of DRA in various domains are examined to underscore the importance of efficient resource allocation, and relevant distributed optimization formulations are presented. The survey then delves into existing solutions for DRA, encompassing linear, nonlinear, primal-based, and dual-formulation-based approaches. Furthermore, this paper evaluates the features and properties of DRA algorithms, addressing key aspects such as feasibility, convergence rate, and network reliability. The analysis of mathematical foundations, diverse applications, existing solutions, and algorithmic properties contributes to a broader comprehension of the challenges and potential solutions for this domain. © 2024, CC BY.
