The utilization of active rectifiers as converters in the interface between AC and DC microgrids has become a prevalent practice owing to their capacity to facilitate bidirectional power flow. The contemporary methodology for the development of power converters includes the integration of real-time simulation steps for the validation of control schemes and the assurance of safe implementation with hardware. The present study pro-poses a methodology for developing a real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation framework, which aims to facilitate the rapid prototyping of advanced control algorithms for an Active-Front-End (AFE) rectifier, especially a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) control strategy. This approach aims to enhance the dynamic performance and stability of low-inertia power systems by mimicking the behavior of a synchronous generator, thereby providing virtual inertia to the power system. The control schemes and the primary circuit models are designed and implemented uti-lizing Matlab/Simulink and are optimized for code generation. © 2023, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). With the introduction of 5G networks, high-speed low-latency network connections became available for mobile and embedded devices without the limited range of WiFi networks. Although the source and the destination can now be hundreds of kilometres away, the communication between them can be flawless. Our goal is to have a low cost, low power, lightweight device that is able to stream video for UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles), mobile robot teleoperation over 5G networks to AR/VR (augmented/virtual reality) applications, to large distances without the need for line of sight. In this paper we compare the latency of existing low cost video streamer solutions (UAV camera streaming, single board computer) and present a custom hardware-software solution optimized for low latency, while conducting measurements over different network types (wired, campus 5G, public 5G). We have shown that the custom device was able to achieve with significantly lower latency (50-80 ms direct over direct connection, about 100-150 ms over public 5G). © 2024 IEEE.

In real world applications, classification models can be built by repeatedly going through the steps of data preprocessing, building classification models with different dedicated algorithms, testing the resulted models, until building a good enough classification model is achieved. The model built in this way can be used in order to perform predictions on new data, with a degree of trust resulted by testing the model. All the operations described above can be done with Weka, which is a very powerful machine learning tool. The authors consider that after going through the previous steps, for many real world applications, it would be beneficial to go through a supplementary step, of developing a custom application for data classification, specific to the realized study. The proposed application will use the Weka API, which will allow it to rebuild the selected classification model, save and load it in/from a binary file and then make predictions with the help of a user interface perfectly adapted to the data set used. The proposed application makes it easier to make predictions for a final beneficiary. The paper presents how such a custom classification application can be developed, using the Weka API and Java programming language. In order to validate the proposed solution, the authors have built a custom application for the classification of data of patients who may have heart diseases, starting from the Cleveland heart disease data set, obtained from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. The proposed application allows saving and loading the classification model through serialization and deserialization, so that building it in order to make predictions is necessary only once. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper describes an aggregate cloud-based digital twin (DT) that models an industrial robot by virtualizing its physical structure, motion and action control, operating modes, parameters and interactions with shop floor devices. The DT functionalities are: tuning robot motion parameters, shop floor layout validation for collision avoidance, robot health monitoring and anomaly detection, concurrent job allocation to multiple robots, by implementing in cloud IAAS three DT-specific software configurations: simulation with software in the loop;robust deployment;embedded simulation faster than real-time. This paper presents a study on using innovative machine learning techniques that can be applied in automotive traffic scenarios to increase a vehicle's level of autonomy. The overtaking traffic scenario is treated for predicting the vehicle trajectory when overtaking another vehicle and the data is obtained by image processing using a video camera. Two different methods are compared, first by using classic tracking methods and a Kalman filter (as an adaptive filter) and second by using a machine learning technique - Support Vector Machine. The present article uses as inputs the data received from the camera and focuses on tracking selected objects and estimating their position using mainly image processing in automotive scenarios. The main purpose of this work is to experiment and compare different tracking modes to determine those that have the best performances in terms of runtime, memory usage and prediction accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

The control of a nonlinear process raises various problems, both in terms of the control law design and the controller tuning. This paper presents a tuning procedure of a minimum variance control system based on the analysis of the estimated gain of the controlled process. In this regard, the performed study shows that the settling-time of the estimated process gain can be used as a tuning criterion for the minimum variance controller, allowing the improvement of the control performance. The procedure involves closed-loop estimation of the process gain based on parameters estimates of a linearized model that approximates the nonlinear process functionality around an operating point. The basic idea is that, although the parameters estimates of the linearized model are different in closed-loop, respectively open-loop, the steady-state gain estimates are similar in both cases. Thus, the time dynamics of this estimated gain can be a useful indicator for the control system tuning. In order to validate the proposed procedure, an induction generator integrated into a wind energy conversion system was considered as a controlled process. © 2023 IEEE.

Generalized Formal Model-Verifier: A Formal Approach for Verifying Static Models

The field of software modeling has gained significant popularity in the last decades. By capturing the static aspects of the software requirements, model-driven engineering eases the development and maintenance of software. However, additional constraints, such as invariants on model elements, that the solution must conform to may be too complex to include in the structure of the model itself. External solutions are often used to describe static constraints on models, the most prevalent approach being the Object Constraint Language (OCL) and its formal variants. This paper proposes the Generalized Formal Model-Verifier (GFMV), which is a general approach for verifying static constraints on software models. GFMV employs different formal verification methods based on Kripke Structures. Kripke Structures are used to capture the static structure of the model, then the constraints are formalized using a first-order branching-time logic, the Computational Tree Logic (CTL). Finally, the NuSMV model checker is reused to verify whether the constraints formalized in CTL hold on the formal Kripke Structure. When compared to existing solutions, GFMV offers increased generality and formal proof that the constraints hold on the model. The expressive power and runtime-scalability of the approach are evaluated on a real-world example model and OCL invariants cited from literature. © The Author(s) 2024.

Nowadays, the use of inverters is increasing in more and more applications. Environmental awareness is becom-ing a trend, so more and more people install solar energy systems on their houses, which also require the use of inverters. Higher power levels have led to the emergence of three-level inverters which has opened up new challenges, such as the issue of midpoint voltage balancing. This paper discusses voltage balancing and voltage ripple reduction techniques for three-level inverters with Neutral-Point Clamped (NPC) topology. The balancing is based on injecting zero-sequence voltage component in carrier-based modulation. The viability of the modulation techniques are verified by computer simulation and then tested on hardware. © 2023, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). In the present paper, the operation of high-power wind turbines of the order of mega-watts (MW), is analysed at significantly variable wind speeds over time. Experimental data from a wind turbine operating in the Dobrogea region are processed, at a higher sampling frequency of measurements. The current operating condition is investigated from an efficiency viewpoint and compared with an optimized controlled setting, in which the electric generator power is controlled dependent on the wind speed value. We find that wind speed sampling frequency is an important factor impacting control quality, while the improved control is mandatory for maximal operation efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Autonomous exploration of unknown environments using unmanned robots is a widely researched problem of our days. The focus of this paper is to provide a novel goal-selection method in response to the problems of the simple greedy goal selection algorithm. The presented method uses a tree structure built from the detected frontiers and selects the next goal of exploration using a depth-first search on the expanding tree. This prevents the exploring robot from leaving half-explored areas and backtracking to them later in the exploration. The method is tested in two simulated environments. The results are compared to those achieved using a simple greedy goal selection algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.
