Gamakas are an integral aspect of Carnatic Music, a form of classical music prevalent in South India. They are used in rāgas, which may be seen as melodic scales and/or a set of characteristic melodic phrases. Gamakas exhibit continuous pitch variation often spanning several semitones. In this paper, we study how gamakas scale with tempo and propose a novel approach to change the tempo of Carnatic music pieces. The music signal is viewed as consisting of constant-pitch segments and transients. The transients show continuous pitch variation and we consider their analyses from a theoretical stand-point. We next observe the non-uniform ratios of time-scaling of constantpitch segments, transients and silence in excerpts from nine concert renditions of varn. ams in six rāgas. The results indicate that the changing tempo of Carnatic music does not change the duration of transients significantly. We report listening tests on our algorithm to slow down Carnatic music that is consistent with this observation. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Transcriptomic imputation approaches combine eQTL reference panels with large-scale genotype data in order to test associations between disease and gene expression. These genic associations could elucidate signals in complex genome-wide association study (GWAS) loci and may disentangle the role of different tissues in disease development. We used the largest eQTL reference panel for the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to create a set of gene expression predictors and demonstrate their utility. We applied DLPFC and 12 GTEx-brain predictors to 40,299 schizophrenia cases and 65,264 matched controls for a large transcriptomic imputation study of schizophrenia. We identified 413 genic associations across 13 brain regions. Stepwise conditioning identified 67 non-MHC genes, of which 14 did not fall within previous GWAS loci. We identified 36 significantly enriched pathways, including hexosaminidase-A deficiency, and multiple porphyric disorder pathways. We investigated developmental expression patterns among the 67 non-MHC genes and identified specific groups of pre- and postnatal expression.

SocialRobot is a collaborative European project, which focuses on providing a practical and interactive solution to improve the quality of life of elderly people. Having this in mind, a state of the art robotic mobile platform has been integrated with virtual social care technology to meet the elderly individual needs and requirements, following a human centered approach. In this short paper, we make an overview of SocialRobot, the developed architecture and the human-robot interactive scenarios being prepared and tested in the framework of the project for dissemination and exploitation purposes. Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts. We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases. © 2020, CC BY.

The occurrence of emergency situations in high-rise buildings, daily hosting hundreds of people, may force the massive evacuation of their occupants with the ultimate goal of preventing the loss of lives. In this paper, we propose an adaptive algorithm for dynamically computing safe evacuation routes, while the load of people is balanced between the accesses of each floor of the building, thus avoiding the accumulation of people in hotspots. The combination of this algorithm with sensors to detect the events of interest and a navigation system to guide the evacuees turns this solution into a specially suited approach for evacuation in high-rise buildings. Simulation results demonstrate that the yield evacuation routes drive all people outdoor with a similar average path length for the different riskscenarios addressed. © 2016 IEEE.

Several studies suggest that robots can play a relevant role to address Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This paper presents a humanoid social robot-assisted behavioral system based on a therapeutic multilevel treatment protocol customized to improve eye contact, joint attention, symbolic play, and basic emotion recognition. In the system, the robot acts as a social mediator, trying to elicit specific behaviors in child, taking into account his/her multimodal signals. Statistical differences in eye contact and facial expression imitation behaviors after the use of the system are reported as preliminary results.

This paper studies the problem of image-based leader-follower formation control for mobile robots, where the controller is designed independently of the leader's motion. An adaptive control scheme, which is suitable for both omnidirectional and perspective cameras, is proposed. The proposed approach avoids the need for accurate calibration of the extrinsic parameters of the omnidirectional camera as well as the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of perspective camera. Additionally, the coefficients of the plane where the feature point moves relative to the camera frame can be uncertain. These uncertain constant parameters are estimated using an adaptive estimator. Uniform Semi-global Practical Asymptotic Stability (USPAS) of the system is shown using the Lyapunov approach. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. © 2017 IEEE.

With the increasing amount of interconnections between vehicles, the attack surface of internal vehicle networks is rising steeply. Although these networks are shielded against external attacks, they often do not have any internal security to protect against malicious components or adversaries who can breach the network perimeter. To secure the in-vehicle network, all communicating components must be authenticated, and only authorized components should be allowed to send and receive messages. This is achieved through the use of an authentication framework. Cryptography is widely used to authenticate communicating parties and provide secure communication channels (e.g. Internet communication). However, the real-time performance requirements of in-vehicle networks restrict the types of cryptographic algorithms and protocols that may be used. In particular, asymmetric cryptography is computationally infeasible during vehicle operation. In this work, we address the challenges of designing authentication protocols for automotive systems. We present Lightweight Authentication for Secure Automotive Networks (LASAN), a full life-cycle authentication approach. We describe the core LASAN protocols and show how they protect the internal vehicle network while complying with the real-time constraints and low computational resources of this domain. By leveraging on the fixed structure of automotive networks, we minimize bandwidth and computation requirements. Unlike previous work, we also explain how this framework can be integrated into all aspects of the automotive product life cycle, including manufacturing, vehicle maintenance and software updates. We evaluate LASAN in two different ways: Firstly, we analyze the security properties of the protocols using established protocol verification techniques based on formal methods. This paper addresses the problem of distributed state estimation in a multi-vehicle framework. In the scenario envisioned in this work, each vehicle aims to estimate its own state by implementing a local state observer which relies on locally available measurements and limited communication with other vehicles in the vicinity. The dynamics of the problem are formulated as a more general discrete-time Kalman filtering problem with a sparsity constraint on the gain and, based on this formulation, a method for computation of steady-state observer gains for arbitrary fixed measurement topologies is introduced. The proposed method consists in the optimization of the time-varying distributed Kalman filter over a finite time window to approximate steady-state behavior and compute well-performing steady-state observer gains. To assess the performance of the proposed solution, simulation results are detailed for the practical case of a formation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).
