It has been an important task of discovering frequent fragments as particular patterns from large sequence databases generated from a variety of applications. In general, the patterns to be discovered may partially and asynchronously exist in sequences, and even contain gaps. In addition, it is necessary to collect the information regarding the locations and frequencies of the patterns. How to enumerate candidate patterns for evaluation without exponentially increasing the computation is another problem. In this paper, the modified periodicity transform is proposed to meet the requirements mentioned above. Also, a distributed computing framework is implemented to perform the mining task more efficiently. Both synthetic and biological sequences are utilized to examine the approach. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness the system.

When addressing terrorist threats we must give special attention to both prevention and disaster response. Enabling effective interactions between agent teams and humans for disaster response is a critical area of research, with encouraging progress in the past few years. However, previous work suffers from'two key limitations: (i) limited human situational awareness, reducing human effectiveness in directing agent teams and (ii) the agent team's rigid interaction strategies that limit team performance. This paper focuses on a novel disaster response software prototype, called DEFACTO (Demonstrating Effective Flexible Agent Coordination of Teams through Omnipresence). DEFACTO is based on a software proxy architecture and 3D visualization system, which addresses the two limitations described above. First, the 3D visualization interface enables human virtual omnipresence in the environment, improving human situational awareness and ability to assist agents. Second, generalizing past work on adjustable autonomy, the agent team chooses among a variety of "team-level" interaction strategies, even excluding humans from the loop in extreme circumstances. Model transformation (MT) is a key technology in the model-driven development approach of software engineering that provides automated means to capture the evolution of models and mappings between modeling languages. The pattern and rule-based paradigm of graph transformation is considered a very popular approach for specifying such model transformations. While the expressiveness of different MT specification techniques is frequently compared on well-known transformation problems (e.g. UML-to-XMI, or UML-to-EJB mappings), no such benchmarks exist currently for comparing the performance of different model transformation tools. In the paper, we propose a systematic method for quantitative benchmarking in order to assess the performance of graph transformation tools. Typical features of the graph transformation paradigm and various optimization strategies exploited in different toots are identified and categorized. Moreover, the performance of several popular graph transformation tools is measured and compared on a well-known distributed mutual exclusion problem.

Large-scale complex embedded systems pose unique problems. To reduce overall development times, there is a need to develop the system in a concurrent fashion, involving the development and verification of software at the same time as designing, building and verifying the hardware. This requires a two-phase trade-off analysis approach to the hardware software co-design problem. The first phase is platform independent: it allows system requirements to be met and also supports other important objectives, e.g. scalability, upgradeability. The results of the first phase include deriving requirements and design constraints placed on the platform dependent phase (eg. resource budgets including time). The second, platform dependent phase, chooses the actual software and hardware implementation that satisfies the requirements derived in phase 1. This paper addresses the first part of the problem through trade-off analysis. This establishes the design decisions in a traceable manner whilst capturing the rationale and assumptions made. It then searches the design space for the solution that best meets the system's objectives. The approach has been developed for the needs of critical systems and has already been applied to the logical design of systems.

Bandwidth management is very important to quality of service of network applications. Communications and data transmissions between hosts in a LAN environment may be large in many systems, such as clustering systems and parallel systems. If the network bandwidth is not enough, real-time packets may be delayed and miss their timing constraints. There are many technologies developed to increase host bandwidth in a LAN environment, but most of them need switching hubs with special support such as IEEE Link Aggregation Standard and are very expensive. In this paper, we propose a real-time message channel, BondingPlus, in Linux Ethernet environment which can make use of multiple Ethernet adapters simultaneously between hosts connected with regular switching hubs. When receiving packets from upper network layer, BondingPlus schedules packets in data link layer. real-time packets can be dispatched into a higher-priority queue so that the packets can be transmitted through the physical Ethernet interface right away. Furthermore, real-time applications can transmit real-time packets via one or several dedicated network adapters which create real-time message channels between hosts and thus reduce transmission delay and jitter dramatically, especially suitable for applications that have high bandwidth and real-time requirements. This approach is implemented in two Linux kernel modules and is backward compatible, flexible and transparent to users. BondingPlus pseudo Ethernet device driver module receives packets from upper network layer and dispatches the packets to multiple physical network adapters with a single IP address. ARP+ protocol module is responsible for maintaining a table of the mapping between an IP address and its corresponding MAC addresses of multiple physical network adapters. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Despite Java's initial promise of providing a reliable and cost-effective platform-independent environment, the language appears to be unfavourable in the area of high-integrity systems and real-time systems. To encourage the use of Java in the development of distributed high-integrity real-time systems, the language environment must provide not only a well-defined specification or subset, but also a complete environment with appropriate analysis tools. We propose an extensible distributed high-integrity real-time Java environment, called XRTJ, that supports three attributes, i.e., predictable programming model, dependable static analysis environment, and reliable distributed run-time environment. The goal of this paper is to present an overview of our on-going project and report on its current status. We also raise some important issues in the area of distributed high-integrity systems, and present how we can deal with them by defining two distributed run-time models where safe and timely operations will be supported. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In a very basic sense, the aim of knowledge discovery is to reveal structures of knowledge which can be seen as being represented by structural relationships. In this paper, we make this notion more precise and present a method how to extract structural information from statistical data. There are two key ideas underlying our approach: First, knowledge discovery is understood as a process which is inverse to inductive knowledge representation. So the relevance of discovered information is judged with respect to the chosen representation method. Second, the link between structural and numerical knowledge is established by an algebraic theory of conditionals, which considers conditionals as agents acting on possible worlds. By applying this theory, we develop an algorithm that computes sets of probabilistic rules from distributions. In particular, we show how sparse information can be dealt with appropriately in our framework. The inductive representation method used here is based on information theory, so that the discovered rules can be considered as being most informative in a strict, formal sense. This paper considers the problem of transforming a resource feasible, fixed-times schedule into a partial order schedule (POS) to enhance its robustness and stability properties. Whereas a fixed-times schedule is brittle in the face of unpredictable execution dynamics and can quickly become invalidated, aPOS retains temporal flexibility whenever problem constraints allow it and can often absorb unexpected deviation from predictive assumptions. We focus specifically on procedures for generating Chaining Form POSs, wherein activities competing for the same resources are linked into precedence chains. One interesting property of a Chaining Form POS is that it is "makespan preserving" with respect to its originating fixed-times schedule. Thus, issues of maximizing schedule quality and maximizing schedule robustness can be addressed sequentially in a two-step scheduling procedure. Using this approach, a simple chaining algorithm was recently shown to provide an effective basis for transforming good quality solutions into POSs with good robustness properties. Here, we investigate the possibility of producing POSs with better robustness and stability properties through more extended search in the space of Chaining Form POSs. We define two heuristics which make use of a structural property of chaining form POSs to bias chaining decisions. Experimental results on a resource-constrained project scheduling benchmark confirm the effectiveness of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
