Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The robot arm with multiple degrees of freedom and working in a 3D space needs to avoid obstacles during the grasping process by its end effector. Path planning to avoid obstacles is very important for accomplishing a grasping task. This paper proposes a new obstacle avoidance algorithm, based on an existing deep reinforcement learning framework called deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). Specifically, we propose to use DDPG to plan the trajectory of a robot arm to realize obstacle avoidance. The rewards are designed to overcome the difficulty in convergence of multiple rewards, especially when the rewards are antagonistic with respect to each other. Obstacle avoidance of the robot arm using DDPG is achieved by self-learning, and the convergence problem caused by the high dimension state input and multiple return values is solved. The simulation model of an arm of the Nao robot is built based on the MuJoCo simulation environment. The simulation demonstrates that the proposed algorithm successfully allows the robot arm to avoid obstacles.

Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK¹. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children. © 2023, The Author(s).

Solar power availability is intermittent and must be accompanied by an energy storage system (ESS) so that the effect of variability can be minimized. Hence, a strategy is needed to find the optimum combination of grid power, solar power, and power from the ESS so that the total cost of energy can be minimized. A solution to this problem is proposed here as Advanced Optimal Resource Allocation (AORA). This control scheme uses the prediction of Photovoltaic (PV) power availability, the real-time price of energy, and the levelized cost of energy for both PV and ESS to optimally combine the dispatch of power sources. Simulation results are presented for a 24 h prediction window and compared with a baseline power usage scheme that is based on a fixed charging and discharging schedule for the ESS. The comparison shows that AORA results in a substantial cost savings over the baseline scheme. © 2018 IEEE.

Anthropogenic climate change, resulting in a continuous rise of global temperature, has detrimental effects on human health, particularly among vulnerable populations, such as individuals with low income, older adults, and people with pre-existing health conditions. To reduce the heat-related health consequences, effective interventions targeting community members, especially vulnerable populations, are paramount. This systematic review aims to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of community-based heat adaptation behavioural interventions aimed at improving heat literacy, promoting adaptive behaviours, and enhancing health outcomes amid rising global temperatures. In this systematic review, peer-reviewed English-language articles focused on community-based heat adaptation intervention studies published in PubMed, MEDLINE via Ovid, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to Jan 1, 2024, were retrieved and reported according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The quality of the articles was evaluated with the use of a mixed-methods appraisal tool. The analysis synthesised intervention effectiveness across multiple outcome domains measurable at both individual and household levels, identified key factors influencing successful implementation, and highlighted areas for future research. The initial search yielded 1266 articles, of which ten were finally included. The majority of the included studies (n=7) were from high-income countries. Most intervention modules focused on preventive measures during heat exposure, whereas only a few addressed information on disease mechanisms, risk factors, and monitoring environmental changes. Although most studies reported significant improvements in heat literacy and a reduction in heat-related symptoms, the evidence for behavioural changes and health outcomes was mixed. The aim of this article is to show problems with the analysis of various cognitive disorders in the registered EEG signal and the effects of the neurofeedback therapy. Most of the disorders tested in ICD-10 have electroencephalographic readings associated with Beta bands and slow waves. All problems with attention deficit have similar records in the EEG signal and similar training protocols are used in their therapy and the results of the therapy are visible in more than 10 training sessions.

In this work, the result of the initial attempt to propose an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) digital security and interoperability standard to support the mobility among ASEAN countries is presented. Literature reviews on existing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related digital technologies of six ASEAN member countries are conducted. Several concerns related to creating/implementing the ASEAN digital security and interoperability standard are discussed including the technology accessing concern, the data security and privacy concern, and the data interoperability and availability concern. The proposed solution toward creating an ASEAN digital security and interoperability standard is then presented. To evaluate the proposed solution, a survey has been conducted on representatives of nine ASEAN countries on four main issues including the security standards and requirements, the interoperability standard and requirements, the certifications, and the implementation challenges. According to the survey and the discussion, seven recommendations were proposed toward creating an ASEAN digital security and interoperability standard. First, each country collects and maintains the data of its own citizens and also provides a method to authenticate and access the data by authorized requests. Second, QR code standard or ASEAN QR code standard must be agreed upon so that it can be authenticated and verified by ASEAN countries. Third, health risk assessment must be agreed upon to be used. Forth, the security standard, the data, the data format and the exchange protocol must be agreed upon at the ASEAN policy level while adoption of international standards as an implementation guideline will ease of the process and neutralize different requirements from various countries. This paper studies the prediction of the spatial-dependent-heat transfer coefficient γ(x) and- heat flux q(x), using the modified conjugate gradient method (MCGM). The mathematical formulation of the problem well defined and the existence of the minimizer is investigated. We establish the sensitivity and adjoint equations for computing the gradient with respect to γ(x) and q(x). The proposed algorithm 4.1 is derived for reconstructing γ(x) and q(x) using the MCGM. The numerical experiments are examined to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. Finally, some conclusions and remarks are given.

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are freely accessible materials for teaching, learning, and research that have been made available such that they can be freely used, modified, and shared. Prompted by the potential positive impact that OERs can have, a growing community of OER enthusiasts has been advocating for their adoption in higher education, and elsewhere. The growing demand for computer science education and training (especially in areas related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data) has led to speculation as to how OERs may be best leveraged to support such teaching and learning. The recent occasion of an international OER workshop at the 2019 IEEE Conference on Computers, Software and Applications (COMPSAC) allowed for six OER enthusiasts, all with extensive OER experience, to reflect on the status of OER adoption and understanding. These reflections, addressing misconceptions and challenges, form the basis for this paper.

The ever-increasing number of electronic content stored in digital libraries requires a significant amount of effort in cataloguing and has led to self-deposit solutions where the authors submit and publish their own digital records. Even in self-deposit, going through the abstract and assigning subject terms or keywords is a time consuming and expensive process, yet crucial for the metadata quality of the record that affects retrieval. Therefore, an automatic, or even a semi-automatic process that can recommend topics for a new entry is of huge practical value. A system that can address that has to rely basically on two components, one component for efficiently representing the relevant information of the new document and one component for recommending an appropriate set of topics based on the representation of the previous stage. In this work, different candidate solutions for both components are investigated and compared. For the first stage both distributed Document to Vector (doc2vec) and conventional Bag of Words (BoW) components are employed, while for the latter two different transformation approaches from the field of multi-label classification are compared. For the comparison, a collection of Ph.D. abstracts (～19000 documents) from the MIT Libraries Dspace repository is used suggesting that different combinations can provide high quality solutions.
