On the regularization of generalized eigenvalues classifiers

Generalized Eigenvalues Classifiers (GEC), which originated from the GEPSVM algorithm by Mangasarian, proved to be an efficient alternative to the Support Vector Machines (SVMs) in the solution of supervised classification tasks. However real-life datasets are often characterized by a large number of redundant features and by a great number of points whose labels are difficult (or too expensive) to assign. In this work we start from the Regularized Generalized Eigenvalue Classifier (ReGEC) and show how regularization terms can be used to enable the classifier to solve two different problems, strictly connected to that of supervised classification: feature selection and semi-supervised classification. Numerical results, obtained on some standard benchmark data sets, show the efficiency of the proposed solutions.

In this paper, the problem of H_∞ group consensus is addressed for networks of agents modeled by single-integrator with model uncertainty and external disturbance. The first part of the work is to show that the group consensus with desired H_∞ performance can be achieved under some sufficient conditions that are established in terms of the structure and strength of the couplings among agents. Then given the observation that the theoretical values of the coupling strengths are usually much larger than expected in practical situations, the second part of the work is concerned with developing an adaptation law to tackle such coupling strength problem.

Automatic control, as well as the introduction to programming, are subjects increasingly being taught to young engineering students. For this reason the availability of a suitable platform for the laboratory work becomes a critical decision, in order to promote students' motivation to experience the theoretical concepts studied in the classroom. Until recently, the only option to perform laboratory work in this kind of subjects was to use closed platforms commercially available but today, thanks to advances in technology, many open hardware options supporting standard and intuitive programming languages are available. In order to provide a multidisciplinary low cost open platform for the automatic control introductory courses, an example of open-source educational platform easily programmable composed by a differential mobile robot with a robotic arm manipulator is presented in this paper. © IFAC.

With the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment {GRACE） mission as the prime example, an overview is given on the management and processing of Level IA data of a low-low satellite to satellite tracking mission. To illustrate the underlying principle and algorithm, a detailed study is made on the K-band ranging （KBR） assembly, which includes the measurement principles, modeling of noises, the generation of Level 1A data from that of Level 0 as well as Level IA to Level IB data processing.

Least-Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVMs), originating from Statistical Learning and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) theories, represent a promising approach to identify nonlinear systems via nonparametric estimation of the involved nonlinearities in a computationally and stochastically attractive way. However, application of LS-SVMs and other RKHS variants in the identification context is formulated as a regularized linear regression aiming at the minimization of the 2 loss of the prediction error. This formulation corresponds to the assumption of an auto-regressive noise structure, which is often found to be too restrictive in practical applications. In this paper, Instrumental Variable (IV) based estimation is integrated into the LS-SVM approach, providing, under minor conditions, consistent identification of nonlinear systems regarding the noise modeling error. It is shown how the cost function of the LS-SVM is modified to achieve an IV-based solution. Although, a practically well applicable choice of the instrumental variable is proposed for the derived approach, optimal choice of this instrument in terms of the estimates associated variance still remains to be an open problem. The effectiveness of the proposed IV based LS-SVM scheme is also demonstrated by a Monte Carlo study based simulation example. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Autonomous Exploration of Large Unknown Indoor Environments for Dense 3D Model Building

Autonomous exploration and mapping of indoor environments is important task for building inspections. Mapping of large environments in 3D requires high memory and computational consumptions. In this paper, we present a 3D exploration strategy for a mobile robot equipped with a 3D laser scanner. Our strategy does not require a map of the environment and ensures on-line exploration of large unknown spaces. We propose a room detection algorithm and focus on the room-by-room exploration keeping the memory and computational requirements low. We evaluated our strategy by simulations and experimentally using a real mobile robot.

The security of source has become an increasingly important issue in quantum cryptography. Based on the framework of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD), the source becomes the only region exploitable by a potential eavesdropper (Eve). Phase randomization is a cornerstone assumption in most discrete-variable (DV) quantum communication protocols (e.g., QKD, quantum coin tossing, weak-coherent-state blind quantum computing, and so on), and the violation of such an assumption is thus fatal to the security of those protocols. In this paper, we show a simple quantum hacking strategy, with commercial and homemade pulsed lasers, by Eve that allows her to actively tamper with the source and violate such an assumption, without leaving a trace afterwards. Furthermore, our attack may also be valid for continuous-variable (CV) QKD, which is another main class of QKD protocol, since, excepting the phase random assumption, other parameters (e.g., intensity) could also be changed, which directly determine the security of CV-QKD.

This paper aims to perform the convergence analysis for a group of linear multi-agent systems with time delay and communicating over arbitrary network topology. It is proved that within the allowable delay bound, all the agents within each closed strong component reach synchronization, while all the other agents outside the closed strong components converge to the dynamic convex hull spanned by the agents in the closed strong components. The delay bound is calculated by the method of semi-discretization, which is also useful in searching for an optimal feedback control with the fastest convergence rate for a certain time delay. A simulation example is given to illustrate the validity of the obtained results.

The development of production and increasing usage of light electric vehicles such as electric bicycles and electric scooters entails development of batteries, battery chargers and fast charging algorithms. Batteries with different nominal electrical characteristics and production technologies are currently in use. Among them, lithium-iron batteries are increasingly being used. The differences in basic characteristics of batteries and standardization issues require fast identification of various battery types and adapting of charging algorithms according to nominal current, voltage, capacity and state of charge. This paper describes a method for determining the nominal current for unknown LiFePO 4 battery connected to the stationary filling station for charging electric bicycles. A prerequisite for determination of the rated current is identification of current-voltage curve at the moment of connection and identification of the number of cells. The algorithm for determining these parameters is given in the first part of the paper. The second part deals with determination of the nominal current for LiFePO 4 battery based on current-voltage response to the selected battery charging algorithm.

The improvement of the building sector energy efficiency becomes crucially important to attain a balance in many sectors. Reduction of the energy consumption in buildings by using model predictive control strategies is recognized as one of the essential solutions to achieve considerable energy savings. Due to the nature of thermodynamic processes in buildings the underlying models are mostly nonlinear and of high order. In this work Constrained Unscented Kalman Filter is employed to obtain a linear low order model of a large public building applicable for the predictive control. Through the comparison of results with the data generated by highly accurate building simulation software IDA Indoor Climate and Energy (IDA-ICE), it has been shown that the first order linear model for each zone, with separated nonlinearities related to the solar radiation effects, is sufficient to capture the main dynamics of the observed building.
