This paper introduces a novel multiobjective approach for capacity benefit margin (CBM) assessment taking into account tie-line reliability of interconnected systems. CBM is the imperative information utilized as a reference by the load-serving entities (LSE) to estimate a certain margin of transfer capability so that a reliable access to generation through interconnected system could be attained. A new Pareto-based evolutionary programming (EP) technique is used to perform a simultaneous determination of CBM for all areas of the interconnected system. The selection of CBM at the Pareto optimal front is proposed to be performed by referring to a heuristic ranking index that takes into account system loss of load expectation (LOLE) in various conditions. Eventually, the power transfer based available transfer capability (ATC) is determined by considering the firm and nonfirm transfers of CBM. A comprehensive set of numerical studies are conducted on the modified IEEE-RTS79 and the performance of the proposed method is numerically investigated in detail. The main advantage of the proposed technique is in terms of flexibility offered to an independent system operator in selecting an appropriate solution of CBM simultaneously for all areas. © 2015 Muhammad Murtadha Othman et al.

Decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD) is a standard technique in current quantum cryptographic implementations. Unfortunately, existing experiments have two important drawbacks: the state preparation is assumed to be perfect without errors and the employed security proofs do not fully consider the finite-key effects for general attacks. These two drawbacks mean that existing experiments are not guaranteed to be proven to be secure in practice. Here, we perform an experiment that shows secure QKD with imperfect state preparations over long distances and achieves rigorous finite-key security bounds for decoy-state QKD against coherent attacks in the universally composable framework. We quantify the source flaws experimentally and demonstrate a QKD implementation that is tolerant to channel loss despite the source flaws. Our implementation considers more real-world problems than most previous experiments, and our theory can be applied to general discrete-variable QKD systems. These features constitute a step towards secure QKD with imperfect devices.

Automatic control, as well as the introduction to programming, are subjects increasingly being taught to young engineering students. For this reason the availability of a suitable platform for the laboratory work becomes a critical decision, in order to promote students' motivation to experience the theoretical concepts studied in the classroom. Until recently, the only option to perform laboratory work in this kind of subjects was to use closed platforms commercially available but today, thanks to advances in technology, many open hardware options supporting standard and intuitive programming languages are available. In order to provide a multidisciplinary low cost open platform for the automatic control introductory courses, an example of open-source educational platform easily programmable composed by a differential mobile robot with a robotic arm manipulator is presented in this paper.

Movement disorders, problems with motion and gait stability related to aging form a very intensively studied research area. The paper presents a contribution to these topics through the use of data acquired by motion sensors and namely image and depth sensors of the MS Kinect. While video sequences obtained by complex camera systems can be used for the precise gait features evaluation, it is possible to use much cheaper devices for diagnostic purposes accurate enough in many cases. The experimental part of the study presents video sequences and depth sensors data acquisition for 18 individuals with the Parkinson's disease and 18 healthy age-matched controls using the proposed graphical user interface in the clinical environment. Results presented include the estimation of gait features to distinguish gait disorders and to classify individuals in the early stage of possible serious diseases. The accuracy achieved was higher then 90 % for given sets of individuals. © 2014 IEEE.

Entrainment Analysis in Goodwin-Type Nonlinear Oscillator Networks Driven by External Periodic Signals

In this paper, we present a systematic approach based on harmonic balance method to study the entrained oscillations in a class of Goodwin-type oscillator networks forced by external periodic signals consisting of high order harmonics. First, a necessary condition and a conjecture for entrainment of network oscillations are presented. Next, the authors reveal an estimation for the profile of entrained oscillations in one situation and the monotone dependence of the amplitude and phase shift of entrained oscillations to the external input in other contexts. The theoretical results are then illustrated through some examples including a practical model for circadian rhythm in Neurospora crassa.

Anti-windup systems are modified control structures, which are designed to compensate against the detrimental effects of saturations. This manuscript considers primarily the stability robustness of two well-known anti-windup structures. Sufficient conditions for the stability robustness of the anti-windup structures and optimal robustness against structured norm-bounded plant uncertainty are found. A saturated loop is said to be optimally robust if the constrained loop is as robust as its unconstrained counterpart. The robustness condition is shown to be less conservative than existing results on additive uncertainty. Although it is known that the conventional internal model control provides optimal robustness against additive unstructured uncertainty, this is not the case against the more general uncertainty structure. Equipping mobile robots with an omnidirectional camera is very advantageous in numerous applications as all information about the surrounding scene is stored in a single image frame. In the given context, the present paper is concerned with detection, tracking and following of a moving object with an omnidirectional camera. The camera calibration and image formation is based on the spherical unified projection model thus yielding a representation of the omnidirectional image on the unit sphere. Detection of moving objects is performed by calculating a sparse optical flow in the image and then lifting the flow vectors on the unit sphere where they are discriminated as dynamic or static by analytically calculating the distance of the terminal vector point to a great circle arc. The flow vectors are then clustered and the center of gravity is calculated to form the sensor measurement. Furthermore, the tracking is posed as a Bayesian estimation problem on the unit sphere and the solution based on the von Mises-Fisher distribution is utilized. Visual servoing is performed for the object following task where the control law calculation is based on the projection of a point on the unit sphere. Experimental results obtained by a camera with a fish-eye lens mounted on a differential drive mobile robot are presented and discussed.

The paper presents in its initial part historical notes to the development of digital signal and image processing methods. The following case studies are devoted to their application in biomedicine and they include the use of computational intelligence in EEG and EMG signal processing, image segmentation and registration in orthodontia, the human-machine interaction and the three-dimensional modelling using MS Kinect in diagnostics and treatment of human motion disorders and neurological diseases. Associated comments include remarks and references to the development of modern computational tools, biosensors, wireless communication and data fusion used in assistive technologies and robotic systems. Mathematical tools common to all these applications form the next part of the paper that includes notes to spectral analysis, functional transforms, digital filtering, image enhancement, classification of multi-dimensional signal components and optimization using neural networks. Final remarks emphasize the interdisciplinary significance of the digital signal processing forming the integrating basis of many diverse research areas.

In this article a method for the detection of broken rotor bars in asynchronous machines operating under full load is presented. Unlike most Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) approaches, which operate in the frequency domain, our method operates in the time domain. The scheme is based on the use of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) fault/anomaly detector. PCA is applied on the three stator currents to subsequently calculate the Q statistic which is employed for detecting the presence/absence of a fault. The efficiency of the proposed scheme was experimentally evaluated using different fault severity levels, ranging from 1/4 of a broken bar to three broken bars. The obtained results indicate that the method can detect the caused asymmetry with a very restricted amount of data.

The in-line measurement of COD and NH4-N in the WWTP inflow is crucial for the timely monitoring of biological wastewater treatment processes and for the development of advanced control strategies for optimized WWTP operation. As a direct measurement of COD and NH4-N requires expensive and high maintenance in-line probes or analyzers, an approach estimating COD and NH4-N based on standard and spectroscopic in-line inflow measurement systems using Machine Learning Techniques is presented in this paper. The results show that COD estimation using Radom Forest Regression with a normalized MSE of 0.3, which is sufficiently accurate for practical applications, can be achieved using only standard in-line measurements. In the case of NH4-N, a good estimation using Partial Least Squares Regression with a normalized MSE of 0.16 is only possible based on a combination of standard and spectroscopic in-line measurements. Furthermore, the comparison of regression and classification methods shows that both methods perform equally well in most cases. © 2014 IEEE.
