We consider a class of multi-agent optimal coverage problems in which the goal is to determine the optimal placement of a group of agents in a given mission space so that they maximize a coverage objective that represents a blend of individual and collaborative event detection capabilities. This class of problems is extremely challenging due to the non-convex nature of the mission space and of the coverage objective. With this motivation, greedy algorithms are often used as means of getting feasible coverage solutions efficiently. Even though such greedy solutions are suboptimal, the submodularity (diminishing returns) property of the coverage objective can be exploited to provide performance bound guarantees. Moreover, we show that improved performance bound guarantees (beyond the standard (1-1 / e) performance bound) can be established using various curvature measures of the coverage problem. In particular, we provide a brief review of all existing popular applicable curvature measures, including a recent curvature measure that we proposed, and discuss their effectiveness and computational complexity, in the context of optimal coverage problems. We also propose novel computationally efficient techniques to estimate some curvature measures. Finally, we provide several numerical results to support our findings and propose several potential future research directions. © 2024 IEEE.

The aim of this paper is to address the challenge of gradual domain adaptation within a class of manifold-constrained data distributions. In particular, we consider a sequence of T ≥ 2 data distributions P1, ..., PT undergoing a gradual shift, where each pair of consecutive measures Pi, Pi+1 are close to each other in Wasserstein distance. We have a supervised dataset of size n sampled from P0, while for the subsequent distributions in the sequence, only unlabeled i.i.d. samples are available. Moreover, we assume that all distributions exhibit a known favorable attribute, such as (but not limited to) having intra-class soft/hard margins. In this context, we propose a methodology rooted in Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with an adaptive Wasserstein radius. We theoretically show that this method guarantees the classification error across all Pis can be suitably bounded. Our bounds rely on a newly introduced compatibility measure, which fully characterizes the error propagation dynamics along the sequence. Specifically, for inadequately constrained distributions, the error can exponentially escalate as we progress through the gradual shifts. Conversely, for appropriately constrained distributions, the error can be demonstrated to be linear or even entirely eradicated. Job-shop scheduling is an important but difficult combinatorial optimization problem for low-volume and high-variety manufacturing, with solutions required to be obtained quickly at the beginning of each shift. In view of the increasing demand for customized products, problem sizes are growing. A promising direction is to take advantage of Machine Learning (ML). Direct learning to predict solutions for job-shop scheduling, however, suffers from major difficulties when problem scales are large. In this paper, a Deep Neural Network (DNN) is synergistically integrated within the decomposition and coordination framework of Surrogate Lagrangian Relaxation (SLR) to predict good-enough solutions for subproblems. Since a subproblem is associated with a single part, learning difficulties caused by large scales are overcome. Nevertheless, the learning still presents challenges. Because of the high-variety nature of parts, the DNN is desired to be able to generalize to solve all possible parts. To this end, our idea is to establish 'surrogate' part subproblems that are easier to learn, develop a DNN based on Pointer Network to learn to predict their solutions, and calculate the solutions of the original part subproblems based on the predictions. Moreover, a masking mechanism is developed such that all the predictions are feasible. Numerical results demonstrate that good-enough subproblem solutions are predicted in many iterations, and high-quality solutions of the overall problem are obtained in a computationally efficient manner. The performance of the method is further improved through continuous learning. Note to Practitioners - Scheduling is important for the planning and operation of job shops, and high-quality schedules need to be obtained quickly at the beginning of each shift. Face recognition (FR) technology has numerous applications in artificial intelligence including biometrics, security,authentication, law enforcement, and surveillance. Deep learning (DL) models, notably convolutional neuralnetworks (CNNs), have shown promising results in the field of FR. However CNNs are easily fooled since theydo not encode position and orientation correlations between features. Hinton et al. envisioned Capsule Networksas a more robust design capable of retaining pose information and spatial correlations to recognize objects morelike the brain does. Lower-level capsules hold 8-dimensional vectors of attributes like position, hue, texture, andso on, which are routed to higher-level capsules via a new routing by agreement algorithm. This provides capsulenetworks with viewpoint invariance, which has previously evaded CNNs. This research presents a FR model basedon capsule networks that was tested using the LFW dataset, COMSATS face dataset, and own acquired photos usingcameras measuring 128 × 128 pixels, 40 × 40 pixels, and 30 × 30 pixels. The trained model outperforms state-ofthe-art algorithms, achieving 95.82% test accuracy and performing well on unseen faces that have been blurred orrotated. Additionally, the suggested model outperformed the recently released approaches on the COMSATS facedataset, achieving a high accuracy of 92.47%. Based on the results of this research as well as previous results, capsulenetworks perform better than deeper CNNs on unobserved altered data because of their special equivarianceproperties.

Despite the rapid growth of the ICT sector, there is a gap between it and STEM education, resulting in high dropout rates in computer science and engineering programs. This has led to many vacancies in the ICT job market. A major challenge is that traditional teaching methods fail to engage students in difficult and abstract STEM subjects like programming. To overcome this, innovative technology-enhanced learning solutions are needed. In the past, we created a Programming Learning Assistant System (PLAS) to help novice students learn programming. PLAS provides various types of exercises to develop code reading and writing skills at different levels. In this paper, we implement the gamification into PLAS to enhance students' understanding of programming concepts, boost their confidence, spark their interest in STEM fields, and increase engagement in the course through interactive and stimulating scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.

The conducted research aims to develop a computer vision system for a small-sized mobile humanoid robot. The decentralization of the servomotor control and the computer vision systems is investigated based on the hardware solution point of view, moreover, the required software level to achieve an efficient matched design is obtained. A computer vision system using the upgraded tiny-You Only Look Once (YOLO) network model is developed to allow recognizing and identifying objects and making decisions on interacting with them, which is recommended for crowd environment. During the research, a concept of a computer vision system was developed, which describes the interaction between the main elements, on the basis of which hardware modules were selected to implement the task. A structure of information interaction between hardware modules is proposed, and a connection scheme is developed, on the basis of which a model of a computer vision system is assembled for research, with the required algorithmic and software for solving the problem. To ensure the high speed of the computer vision system based on the ESP32-CAM module, the neural network was improved by replacing the Visual Geometry group 16 (VGG-16) network as the base network for extracting the functions of the Single Shot Detector (SSD) network model with the tiny-YOLO lightweight network model, which made it possible to preserve the multidimensional structure of the network model feature graph, resulting in increasing the detection accuracy, while significantly reducing the amount of calculations generated by the network operation, thereby significantly increasing the detection speed, due to a limited set of objects. Finally, a number of experiments were carried out, both in static and dynamic environments, which showed a high accuracy of identifications. © The author(s) 2025.
