Estimating high-dimensional covariance matrices is crucial in various domains. This work considers a scenario where two collaborating agents access disjoint dimensions of m samples from a high-dimensional random vector, and they can only communicate a limited number of bits to a central server, which wants to accurately approximate the covariance matrix. We analyze the fundamental trade-off between communication cost, number of samples, and estimation accuracy. We prove a lower bound on the error achievable by any estimator, highlighting the impact of dimensions, number of samples, and communication budget. Furthermore, we present an algorithm that achieves this lower bound up to a logarithmic factor, demonstrating its near-optimality in practical settings. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

Increasing the operational efficiency of agricultural machines is essential by the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based navigation, planning, and control algorithms to handle the increasing demand for food production without compromising sustainability. In this study, an end-to-end path planning algorithm (AgroRL) is proposed for aerial-ground robots team collaboration. In the proposed solution, while main operations in the field are handled by the ground vehicle, the aerial robot is responsible for re-planning a collision-free trajectory for the ground robot when the robot faces an obstacle. Deep reinforcement learning is used for training the end-to-end policy for local re-planning of the aerial robot. The agent, informed by the global trajectory, generates local plans based on depth images. Variational autoencoders are also investigated for dimension reduction of the depth images in obstacle avoidance context to speed up deep reinforcement learning and alleviate the computational complexity of the policy network. The agriculture environment is developed in the Webots open-source robot simulator for training and testing purposes. The efficiency and efficacy of the end-to-end planner are evaluated over a number of cluttered field scenarios. The simulation experiments demonstrate a single aerial vehicle guiding multiple ground robots in agricultural operations. © VDE VERLAG GMBH Berlin Offenbach.

Ensemble learning for artificial neural networks (ANNs) is an effective method to enhance predictive performance. However, ANNs are computationally and memory intensive, and naively training multiple networks can lead to excessive training times and costs. An effective tool for improving ensemble efficiency is introducing topological sparsity. Even though several implementations of efficient ensembles have been proposed, none of them can provide actual benefits in terms of computational overhead as the sparsity is simulated using binary masks. In this paper, we address this issue by introducing a Truly Sparse Ensemble without binary masks and directly incorporate native sparsity. We also propose two algorithms for initializing new subnetworks within the ensemble, leveraging this native topological sparsity to enhance subnetwork diversity. We demonstrate the performance of the resulting models at high levels of sparsity on several datasets in terms of classification accuracy, floating point operations (FLOPs), and actual running time. The proposed methods outperform all baseline dense and truly sparse models on tabular data, successfully diversify the training trajectory of the subnetworks, and increase the topological distance between subnetworks after re-initialization. © The Author(s) 2025.

Discriminative Dimension Selection (DDS) has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying the most relevant features in high-dimensional datasets, enabling interpretable data analysis and visualization. This paper explores the application of DDS which utilizes overlapping clusters and dimensions to enhance the interpretability and performance of the K-means clustering algorithm. Our approach leverages the post-processing capabilities of K-means to selectively retain informative features and discard redundant or irrelevant ones. This refined feature set not only preserves the clustering performance of K-means but also enhances its interpretability and visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using a variety of datasets and compare its performance against traditional K-means and the proposed method Overlap-resolved Clustering (ORC). We also test with multiple cluster validity indices such as the Silhouette Coefficient Score (SS), Davies-Bouldin Index (DB), and Calinski-Harabasz Index (CH). Our results consistently show that ORC produces better clustering results and enhances the interpretability of the datasets. This study highlights the potential of DDS as a valuable tool for improving the interpretability and visualization of high-dimensional data analysis using K-means clustering. © 2024 IEEE.

Myelin damage and a wide range of symptoms are caused by the immune system targeting the central nervous system in Multiple Sclerosis(MS),a chronic autoimmune neurological *** disrupts signals between the brain and body,causing symptoms including tiredness,muscle weakness,and difficulty with memory and *** methods for detecting MS are less precise and time-consuming,which is a major gap in addressing this *** gap has motivated the investigation of new methods to improve MS detection consistency and *** paper proposed a novel approach named FAD consisting of Deep Neural Network(DNN)fused with an Artificial Neural Network(ANN)to detect MS with more efficiency and accuracy,utilizing regularization and combat *** use gene expression data for MS research in the GEO GSE17048 *** dataset is preprocessed by performing encoding,standardization using min-max-scaler,and feature selection using Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross-Validation(RFECV)to optimize and refine the ***,for experimenting with the dataset,another deep-learning hybrid model is integrated with different ML models,including Random Forest(RF),Gradient Boosting(GB),XGBoost(XGB),K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN)and Decision Tree(DT).Results reveal that FAD performed exceptionally well on the dataset,which was evident with an accuracy of 96.55%and an F1-score of 96.71%.The use of the proposed FAD approach helps in achieving remarkable results with better accuracy than previous studies.

Speech emotion recognition(SER)is an important research problem in human-computer interaction *** representation and extraction of features are significant challenges in SER *** the promising results of recent studies,they generally do not leverage progressive fusion techniques for effective feature representation and increasing receptive *** mitigate this problem,this article proposes DeepCNN,which is a fusion of spectral and temporal features of emotional speech by parallelising convolutional neural networks(CNNs)and a convolution layer-based *** parallel CNNs are applied to extract the spectral features(2D-CNN)and temporal features(1D-CNN)representations.A 2D-convolution layer-based transformer module extracts spectro-temporal features and concatenates them with features from parallel *** learnt low-level concatenated features are then applied to a deep framework of convolutional blocks,which retrieves high-level feature representation and subsequently categorises the emotional states using an attention gated recurrent unit and classification *** fusion technique results in a deeper hierarchical feature representation at a lower computational cost while simultaneously expanding the filter depth and reducing the feature *** Berlin Database of Emotional Speech(EMO-BD)and Interactive Emotional Dyadic Motion Capture(IEMOCAP)datasets are used in experiments to recognise distinct speech *** efficient spectral and temporal feature representation,the proposed SER model achieves 94.2%accuracy for different emotions on the EMO-BD and 81.1%accuracy on the IEMOCAP dataset *** proposed SER system,DeepCNN,outperforms the baseline SER systems in terms of emotion recognition accuracy on the EMO-BD and IEMOCAP datasets.

This work proposes a novel multi-beam planar hemi-elliptical lens antenna for satellite communication on the move (SOTM) applications. The antenna system comprises three main parts: the feeding section, the planar lens, and the radiating section. To efficiently transfer energy from the feeding section to the radiating section, the planar hemi-ellipticallens is constructed from a 1.575-mm-thick Rogers RT/duroid 5880 substrate, sandwiched between parallel plates. To radiate multiple independent fan beams in the far field, three air-filled substrate integrated waveguide (AFSIW) horns are placed in the focal plane of the lens. For quick and efficient antenna design, each component of the antenna structure was optimized independently. The antenna concept has been validated over the 17-31 G Hz range, demonstrating a scanning capability of ±25° in the elevation plane. The proposed antenna exhibits beam scanning capabilities in elevation, with a maximum gain of 21 dBi and a scan loss below 3 dB within the operational bandwidth. Its low-cost fabrication process, low profile, and compactness make this antenna a very promising solution for SOTM applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Evaluation is a process that compares the results with the target, an initial situation with the final one. ‘Evaluate’ means making an assessment based on some measure or information and referring to some criteria. The Formative evaluation is a process which is used by trainers and trainees and provides feedback on updating current teaching and learning methods in order to improve trainer’s achievement in relation of teaching goals. In this case study a research was carried out using the technique of formative evaluation in order to evaluate two thematic areas with the cooperation of the program’s leaders. The aim of the study was to extract conclusions and opinions about the program’s value, the achievement goals and the organisation implementation requirements and how all this results will been feed backed to program managers and policymakers with the appropriate information which are necessary to adopt appropriate corrective interventions for programs quality improvement.
