Size-induced axial segregation of binary mixtures in rotating drum of different lengths

This study investigates the size-induced axial segregation of binary mixtures in rotating drums, particularly focusing on the effect of drum length. The results indicate that long drums require more time to achieve stable segregation and form more segregation bands. The core region under the free bed surface remains predominantly filled with small particles, indicating that radial segregation occurs simultaneously with the axial segregation. The angle of repose of large particle bands is consistently greater than that of small particle bands, which drives the migration of large particles. Short drums are more sensitive to changes in rotational speed, while long drums with moderate rotational speed promote the formation of segregation bands. The width of small particle bands shows an increasing–decreasing-stabilizing trend with the drum length increasing. An analysis of particle velocities reveals that the characteristics of segregation bands are closely related to the relative velocity difference between large and small particles.

Statistical Monitoring of processes with Multiple Operating Modes

Varying production regimes and loading conditions on equipment often result in multiple operating modes in process operations. The data recorded from such processes will typically be multimodal in nature leading to challenges in applying standard data-driven process monitoring approaches. Moreover, even if a monitoring approach is able to account for the variability present in a training set comprised of historical process data, in order to be robust and reliable the method will need to account for any new operating modes which might emerge during production. Therefore, it is desirable to have a monitoring algorithm that can both handle data multimodality in off-line training and, when implemented on-line, can actively update in order to incorporate new operating modes. This paper proposes a monitoring framework which combines an unsupervised clustering approach with a kernel-based Multivariate Statistical process Monitoring (MSPM) algorithm. A monitoring model is trained off-line and is subsequently used to detect anomalies on-line. An anomaly might be indicative of either a developing fault or a change in the process to a new operating mode. In the latter case, the monitoring model can be updated to account for the new mode whilst still being able to detect faults under this framework. The advantages of the off-line training procedure relative to a standard kernel-based method are demonstrated via a numerical simulation. Additionally, the monitoring performance in the presence of faults and the capability of updating the model in the presence of new operating modes is demonstrated using a benchmark data set from an experimental pilot plant.

This paper studies the observer design for the fractional order boundary coupled distributed parameter systems. Firstly, we obtain the decoupled observer error systems from the state system and observer system. Secondly, the advection terms are eliminated through the invertible transformation and we can obtain the general reaction-diffusion partial differential equations, which are more convenient for discussions. Thirdly, Backstepping method and target systems are employed to give kernel partial differential equations and then the related observer gains can be derived from the corresponding kernels. Finally, Mittag-Leffler stability of the designed fractional order observers is analyzed and the main results are illustrated by the simulation graphically.

Li-ion batteries are widely used in EV applications and are imposed to several aging effects during their lifetime. Since battery health cannot be measured directly, information about its health can be obtained by iteratively re-estimating the parameters of the model describing its dynamical behavior. The optimal design of experiments is investigated in this paper. The proposed method applies families of input signals (PRBS current and constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) signals) to the batteries to estimate the key aging factors. Simulation experiments have been used to analyze the statistical properties of the estimators as a function of the design parameters of the input signal families. The results show that the CC-CV charging-discharging cycle has the possibility to gain the most information out of the battery model parameter estimation. © 2018

Engine knock detection: an eigenpressure approach

In this work, a knock detection approach based on in-cylinder pressure principal component analysis is proposed. The introduction of a set of basis functions called eigenpressures used to describe the principal components of the pressure traces allows for an easy and effective separation between the typical “bell shape” component of pressure profiles and the knock-induced pressure oscillations, making possible the classification of knocking and not knocking cycles. The proposed approach is compared to a standard knock detection method based on the in-cylinder pressure trace band-pass filtering and to a pure data-driven algorithm. The method shows the best knock classification performances and proves to be advantageous thanks to the low number of easily tunable parameters and their ease of calibration/interpretation.

Toluene, a carcinogen widely used in industrial production, necessitates precise detection for environmental and human safety. The semiconductor gas sensor is an efficient and portable test instrument, but most semiconductor gas sensors face the challenge of high detection limit and low sensitivity when detecting trace levels of toluene. Herein, aluminum-doped zinc oxide supported gold nanoparticles (Au/ZnO-Al) material with a small Au nanoparticle size ( d  = 2.80 ± 0.70 nm) was prepared by the deposition precipitation method. Au/ZnO-Al sensor can detect ppb-level toluene with a low detection limit of 1.1 parts per billion (ppb). Additionally, Au/ZnO-Al sensor also shows high response value of 18.3 and excellent selectivity towards 5 parts per million (ppm) toluene at 275 ℃. Meanwhile, Au/ZnO-Al sensor exhibits excellent reproducibility with no significant change in the resistance over five consecutive cycles of the same concentration of 3 ppm and 500 ppb toluene. The developed Au/ZnO-Al sensor can improve the performance of toluene mainly ascribed to the perimeter interface between Au nanoparticles and ZnO as well as the formation of Schottky junction. Furthermore, the co-effect of Au deposition and Al doping significantly increases the amount of adsorbed oxygen, which is beneficial for enhancing the sensing response. Hence, the Au/ZnO-Al sensor has great potential in detecting trace toluene for human safety.

In this study, the flow characteristics of Geldart A particles in a bobbling fluidized bed with and without perforated plates were simulated by the multiphase particle-in-cell （MP-PlC）-based Eolerian-Lagrangian method. A modified structure-based drag model was developed based on our previous work. Other drag models including the Parker and Wen-Yo-Ergon drag models were also employed to investigate the effects of drag models on the simulation results. Although the modified structure-based drag model better predicts the gas-solid flow dynamics of a baffle-free bubbling fluidized bed in comparison with the experimental data, none of these drag models predict the gas-solid flow in a baffled bobbling floidized bed sufficiently well because of the treatment of baffles in the Barracuda software. To improve the simulation accuracy, future versions of Barracuda should address the challenges of incorporating the bed height and the baffles.

We investigate two classes of quantum control problems by using frequency-domain optimization algorithms in the context of ultrafast laser control of quantum systems. In the first class, the system model is known and a frequency-domain gradient-based optimization algorithm is applied to searching for an optimal control field to selectively and robustly manipulate the population transfer in atomic Rubidium. The other class of quantum control problems involves an experimental system with an unknown model. In the case, we introduce a differential evolution algorithm with a mixed strategy to search for optimal control fields and demonstrate the capability in an ultrafast laser control experiment for the fragmentation of Pr(hfac)3 molecules. Essential oils are widely investigated as an alternative or complementary approach to broad-spectrum synthetic pesticides. In the present study, essential oil of Senecio glaucus subsp. coronopifolius was screened for its antifungal, nematicidal, acaricidal and repellent activities against the phytopathogens Botrytis cinerea , Meloidogyne javanica and Tetranychus urticae Koch under laboratory conditions. The volatile phase method (VF) and poisoned food method (PF) were adopted to test the antifungal activity of the essential oil. The oil gave 83% inhibition at 16 μL/ml using the PF method. VF method showed 86% inhibition of mycelial growth of B. cinerea at 0.8 μL/ml air. To check the nematicidal activity of the essential oil, two bioassays targeted the mortality of second stage juvenile (J2) and hatch inhibition of M. javanica eggs. 95% immobility of J2 and 92% inhibition of egg hatch were recorded at 16,000 ppm. The effect exerted by the oil was nematostatic. In the case of mites, a leaf dip bioassay revealed 100% mortality of T. urticae adults, and repellency of 24% after exposure to the oil at 80% concentration. Chemical profile of S. glaucus essential oil was obtained using GC–MS. Terpenic compounds, such as indicated α-pinene (26.2%), myrcene (11.4%), p-cymene (9.9%), β-pinene (7.7%), γ-muurolene (4%), deoxynivalenol (3.1%) and α-phellandrene (2.7%) were identified as the major components. The findings indicated that S. glaucus essential oil has the potential for management of these pathogens.

Viscous fluid holographic bounce

We investigate bounce cosmological models in the presence of a viscous fluid, making use of generalized holographic cutoffs introduced by Nojiri and Odintsov (2017). We consider both an exponential, a power-law, and a double exponential form for the scale factor. By use of these models we calculate expressions for infrared cutoffs analytically, such that they correspond to the particle horizon at the bounce. Finally we derive the energy conservation equation, from the holographic point of view. In that way the relationship between the viscous fluid bounce and the holographic bounce is demonstrated.
