Memory optimization is an important strategy to gain high performance for sequence alignment implemented by CUDA on GPGPU. Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm is the most sensitive algorithm widely used for local sequence alignment but very time consuming. Although several parallel methods have been used in some studies and shown good performances, advantages of GPGPU memory hierarchy are still not fully exploited. This paper presents a new parallel method on GPGPU using on-chip memory more efficiently to optimize parallel Smith-Waterman sequence alignment presented by Gregory M. Striemer. To minimize the cost of data transfers, on-chip shared memory is used to store intermediate results. Constant memory is also used effectively in our implementation of parallel Smith-Waterman algorithm. Using these two kinds of on-chip memory decreases long latency memory access operations, and reduces demand for global memory when aligning longer sequences. The experimental results show 1.66× to 3.16× speedup over Gregory's parallel SW on GPGPU in terms of execution time and 19.70× speedup on average and 22.43× speedup peak performance over serial SW in terms of clock cycles on our computer platform. © 2010 IEEE.

Many programs require more RAM to hold their data than a typical computer has. Theoretically, both the compression and deduplication can trade the rich computing capacity for more available RAM space. This paper comprehensively evaluates the performance behaviour of memory compression and memory deduplication by using seven real memory traces. The experimental results give two implications: (1) Memory deduplication greatly outperforms memory block compression. (2) Fixed-size partition (FSP) achieves the best performance in contrast to Content-defined Chunking (CDC) and Sliding Block (SB). The optimal chunking size of FSP is equal to the size of a memory page. The analysis results in this paper should be able to provide useful insights for designing or implementing systems that require abundant memory resources to enhance the system performance. © 2013 IEEE.

The growth of digital content generation and its access by the general public have, for the past few years, promoted the importance of resources' metadata, and enhanced the debate on their generation and quality. The improvement of new technologies and users needs have led to new metadata generation practices, which include the author-generated metadata. By studying the current literature on the subject we analyzed the author-generated metadata quality used on a given IPTV service. From the results of this study we propose an alternative methodology for insertion of metadata by the service user, where an auto-complete engine is applied aiming to enhance the system's metadata quality. © 2010 i-Society.

Humans always face problems when it comes to medical check-up due to lack of time or laziness. However, lots of medical problems and fatal illnesses can be detected at earlier stages if the person is subject to continuous check-up. Hence, the idea of the proposed system is to design a tool enabling the measurement of the basic vital signs with the smallest effort possible from the person's side. Thus, this paper proposes a smart medical mirror system that acts as a normal mirror and also delivers the basic vital signs of the user such as the heart rate, SPO2, body temperature, and Body Mass Index (BMI). The system takes five seconds for initialization and starts the measurements and displays the results. The user will not lose time as this check-up can be performed every morning while the person is wearing his clothes and getting ready to start his daily activities. The system was tested by multiple users having different body statuses. The recorded values showed very small differences with the exact ones. At the end, the system was able to meet the user specifications concerning its portability, sensitivity, accuracy and, most importantly, its low cost. © 2020 IEEE.

SAT-based model checking is the most widely used method for verifying industrial designs against their specification. This is due to its ability to handle designs with thousands of state elements and more. The main drawback of using SAT-based model checking is its orientation towards "bug- hunting" rather than full verification of a given specification. Previous works demonstrated how Unbounded Model Checking can be achieved using a SAT solver. In this work we present a novel SAT-based approach to full verification. The approach combines BMC with interpolation-sequence in order to imitate BDD-based Symbolic Model Checking. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method by applying it to industrial-size hardware designs from Intel. Our method compares favorably with McMillan's interpolation based model checking algorithm. © 2009 IEEE.

Epilepsy is a medical problem that tackles lots of patients. It limits the life activity of such patients due to the seizures that occur anytime and anywhere. Thus, creating a monitoring system that could make their life easier and allow them to perform daily life activities as safe as possible has been studied. This paper is a continuity for a project where a system monitors epileptic patients using a set of wearable sensors connected to several processing units, the main sensors are Electroencephalogram (EEG) for the electrical activity of the brain, electrocardiogram (ECG) for the electrical activity of the heart, and accelerometers to monitor the posture of the patient, features extracted from EEG and ECG signals are used for prediction/detection of seizures. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present a comparative study in order to choose the appropriate classification method for seizure prediction and detection. Five classification methods were studied: Decision Trees, Discriminant Analysis, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Ensemble Learning. For each of the classification methods, the accuracy, the specificity, the sensitivity, the precision, the false detection rate and the Fmeasure were studied and compared. The results for seizure prediction system show that the highest accuracy, specificity and F-Measure, and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Bagged Trees Ensemble Learning, the highest sensitivity and precision were achieved with Quadratic Support Vector Machine. However, for seizure detection system, the highest accuracy and F-Measure were achieved with Linear Support Vector, the highest sensitivity and specificity were achieved with Fine Gaussian Support Vector Machine, and the highest precision and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Subspace Discriminant Ensemble Learning. © 2020 IEEE.

In LTE (Long Term Evolution), the high utilization for physical resources is achieved by scheduling suitable number of time frequency resource elements for one user in one subframe. This is supported by the rate matching module that selecting arbitrary number of bits from the turbo coding bit streams. In this paper, a closed-form rate matching implementation method is proposed. It derives an integrated expression which is normalized for the 3 turbo coding streams. This expression sets up a mapping relationship between the bit streams input to and the bit sequence output from rate matching module. Moreover, the expression can be applied to rate de-matching processing in the receiver end. Compared with the existing method, the rate matching method that we proposed generates low latency and requires small memory. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

Despite being a set of proven, well-documented, contextualized recommendations for solving frequently occurring user interface design problems, user interface design patterns are still not widely used. We believe this is due to the lack of tools to help designers find patterns and identify how they can be combined to solve user interface design problems. This paper proposes to classify and make explicit the relationships between user interface design patterns. We conducted a small-scale study that indicated that this proposal is more efficient and better accepted by the participants than browsing through a user interface design library. © 2010 ACM.

In this paper, we presented a method to improve structural modeling based on conserved domain clusters and structure-anchored alignments. We first constructed a template library of structural clusters for all conserved sequence domains. Then, for each cluster, we built the profile using the structure and sequence information. Finally we use the profile and structural alignments as anchors to increase the alignment accuracy between a query and its templates. Our preliminary results show that this method can be used for the partial prediction for a majority of known protein sequences with better qualities. Copyright 2007 ACM.

In general, failure data is obtained in the automotive industry during the warranty period. If these contain the expression of a service life characteristic for each failure, statements can be made about the reliability and availability of the systems. For this purpose, estimation methods are used to adapt empirical lifetime distributions to theoretical lifetime distributions. By means of the distribution characteristics, a prognosis of the reliability and availability to be expected is also possible beyond the observation time. In addition to the data basis to be investigated, which is available completely in test bench and experimental trials or re-censored in the field, various methods can be used for estimation. In the past, several methods have been used, such as the estimators according to ECKEL [1], Kaplan-Meier [2] or the estimators according to Pauli [3]. In general, a field failure is subject to several stresses, which can be described by expressions of several lifetime characteristics. For this application case, which occurs in the automotive industry, the known estimation methods, [1], [2], [3], cannot be used. In this paper, the necessity of multidimensional estimation methods will be introduced first. Then, a new estimation method for multidimensional metrics is presented. In a further step, mathematical proof is given that the new method can provide realistic results. Finally, two example data sets from bench testing and field are presented. Furthermore, some recommendations for the use of the new method are concretized in this context. © ESREL 2021. Published by Research Publishing, Singapore.
