Remanufacturing, a popular term in the automotive industry, helps to reduce the need for raw materials, increase profitability, is an effective solution to the challenges of postal items and also benefits the environment. For the remanufacturing department, the reliability and failure rate of serial products is particularly important, and therefore the accurate prediction of failure rates is also important. It must be ensured that the product meets its reliability requirements. Existing one, two and three dimensional reliability prediction models predict field failures as a function of time, based on the stress experienced by the components/systems in the field until failure. The existing models have been extended to include the parameters that allow us to predict the reliability of refurbished systems. Improvements such as registration delays, reporting delays and the corrected candidate calculation, which deals with whether the product is still within the warranty period after the observation period, are present in the models and are applied to the systems. This reduces the incompleteness of warranty data due to the influence of external factors with MATLAB. The reliability of systems can be predicted with the lifetime prediction and further conclusions can be drawn for future development. In the verification process, the predicted field failures of the models are compared with the real field failures. ©ESREL2020-PSAM15 Organizers.

The diagnosis of possible faults in railway signaling systems is an important issue to provide safe travel and transportation in railways. Signaling system designers have to consider the possible faults which may occur in railway field components both on the requirements preparation phase and on the development phase of the signaling system software or namely, the interlocking system. Although the diagnosis of different unobservable faults is relatively hard, especially for large scale railway fields, this complexity can be overcome by using the Discrete Event system (DES) based modular diagnosis approach which is explained in this paper. The main advantage of using such modular approach for fault diagnosis in fixed-block signaling systems is the inspection of the diagnosability of the whole system with respect to its subsystems (railway field components). In this study, the diagnosability of the railway field equipment and the whole system is also explained with a case study. © 2016

Independent mobility is an important feature of an individual's normal life and with the elderly population continually growing, assistive devices such as walkers and canes provide help and guidance to users. Freezing of Gait (FoG) is an episodic phenomenon that is a common symptom of an age-related disease known as Parkinson Disease (PD). This paper is headed toward implementing a detection, diagnosis and correction system for FoG episodes. The proposed cane will generate visual, auditory and tactile cues to help patients overcome this problem, therefore reducing fall risks. In addition, a vibrating calf cuff will be attached to the calf for muscle stimulation. A compatible android phone application is designed to display heart rate measurements of the patient as well as his exact location in case of fall detection. The system is considered to be an electrically safe, portable, comfortable and a low-cost device. The performance of this system is analyzed thoroughly and the accuracy of all methodologies is considered carefully and evaluated. The results have shown no faulty errors and good accuracy and detection percentages. © 2021 IEEE.

EMI suppressors are passive components typically used to filter high-frequency noise due to their high resistance value. That is usually employed using ferrite material with a higher magnetic loss. This paper introduces a novel approach to fabricating such a device without relying on bulky ferrite materials as the magnetic core. The proposed approach relies on using multilayered materials with high electrical conductivity as the magnetic core. We propose three toroid inductor designs using two customized magnetic materials (A and B) with higher electrical conductivity properties. The first toroid design is based on a single-layer magnetic core, the second on a double-layer magnetic core, and the last on an eight-layer magnetic core. The performance of the single-layered toroid inductor is improved by employing a multi-layered core technique in terms of AC resistance across broadband bandwidth. Notably, the multilayered toroid core exhibits higher resistance across the 5-1175 MHz range as compared to the single-layer design. In addition, Depositing conductive layers like copper onto the multilayered toroids leads to inductors that have multiple resonances. Thus, such an approach allows to control and adjust the operational frequency as needed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a weight initialization strategy for a discrete-time recurrent neural network model. It is based on analyzing the recurrent network as a nonlinear system, and choosing its initial weights to put this system in the boundaries between different dynamics, i.e., its bifurcations. The relationship between the change in dynamics and training error evolution is studied. Two simple examples of the application of this strategy are shown: the identification of DC Induction motor and the detection of a physiological signal, a feature of a visual evoked potential brain signal. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.

The authors present their latest research results and developments of a code generator for Matlab / Simulink block diagrams and to download the generated code onto safety related systems such as a safety PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). An example demonstrates the different stages for code generation, evaluation and conversion before such code can be used in process industries. systematic approaches are necessary when such source code is embedded in process units. To the best knowledge of the authors, Matlab/Simulink source code has not been transferred on safety PLC before. Matlab / Simulink is an advanced and matured programming environment, especially for simulations of engineering processes and systems. Hardly no hardware exists, when it comes to download the developed algorithms and to use it in real world applications and so far this approach is the only one for using developed and tested Matlab / Simulink software on an safety related system. © 2008 IEEE.

Following Mark Weiser's vision of ubiquitous computing and calm technology, computer systems should run in the background, preferably without the user noticing it at all. The gathering and disclosure of contextual information on the one hand enables the improvement of system behaviour towards a more autonomous and adaptive behaviour but on the other hand raises privacy issues by disclosing personal data. Thus, a major challenge in ubiquitous computing environments is achieving a good balance between convenience and control over personal data. In this paper we describe an access control mechanism for context data that enables the user to control his personal data in a convenient and non-intrusive way. The approach is based on existing role-based access control mechanisms but extends them as follows. Firstly, our approach is owner-centric, i.e. it is under control of each user, to whom his context is propagated throughout the system. Secondly, our approach does not only control the access to context data but also utilizes context information to simplify the management of these control mechanisms to make the handling of access control more convenient to the user. And thirdly, it introduces individual roles for each user and thus replaces the centrally defined role model of common role-based access control by distinct models for each user. We have validated our approach based on an extended instant messaging system called Adaptive Multimedia Messenger, providing varying buddy information dependent on the access permission of the requesting user

Safety-related systems mostly comprise hardware and software solutions. Due to the increasing application of complex hardware and software systems, the software systems have to be considered regarding safety as well as hardware systems. The development of a safety-related software system is similar to the development of a safety-related hardware systems. But there are still no generally accepted methods for developing safety-critical software. One has to use the methods, which fit best to the actual requirements. However, the calculation of reliability and availability for safety-related software systems is far more complex.

Electromigration (EM) has emerged as a major reliability concern for interconnects in advanced technology nodes. Most of the existing EM analysis works focus on the power lines. There exists a limited amount of work which analyzes EM failures in the signal lines. However, various emerging spintronic-based memory technologies such as the Spin Transfer Torque Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM) and the Spin Orbit Torque Magnetic Random Access Memory (SOT-MRAM) have high current densities as compared to the conventional Static Random Access Memory (SRAM). These high current densities can lead to EM failures in the signal lines such as bit-line (BL) of these memories. Furthermore, these signal lines have workload-dependent stress as opposed to the conventional DC stress of power distribution networks. In this work, we model the EM failures in the BL of a typical STT memory array with realistic workloads. The analysis is based on physics-based EM model, which is calibrated based on industrial measurement data. The results show that the current densities in the STT arrays can be large enough to cause EM failures in the signal lines with running realistic workloads and that these failures are highly workload-dependent. © 2001-2011 IEEE.

Accelerating BWA Aligner Using Multistage Data Parallelization on Multicore and Manycore architectures

Nowadays, rapid progress in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has drastically decreased the cost and time required to obtain genome sequences. A series of powerful computing accelerators, such as GPUs and Xeon Phi MIC, are becoming a common platform to reduce the computational cost of the most demanding processes when genomic data is analyzed. GPU has received more attention at literature so far. However, Xeon Phi constitutes a very attractive approach to improve performance because applications don’t need to be rewritten in a different programming language specifically oriented to it. Sequence alignment is a fundamental step in any variant analysis study and there are many tools that cope with this problem. We have selected BWA, one of the most popular sequence aligner, and studied different data management strategies to improve its execution time on hybrid systems made of multicore CPUs and Xeon Phi accelerators. Our main contributions are focused on designing new strategies that combine data splitting and index replication in order to achieve a better balance in the use of system memory and reduce latency penalties. Our experimental results show significant speed-up improvements when such strategies are executed in our hybrid platform, taking advantage of the combined computing power of a standard multicore CPU and a Xeon Phi accelerator.
