Virtual synchronous generator model control of PV for improving transient stability and damping in a large-scale power system

Because of the significant changes in environmental policies and electric power deregulation in the last decade, a lot of photovoltaic generations (PV) have been and will be installed into the power system in Japan and the ratio of PVs to other synchronous generators will be increased. As a countermeasure against the decrease in the rotational inertia in the whole power system, a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) model control of the PV has so far been proposed. However, the system stabilization effect of the VSG in large-scale power systems has been unclear. In this paper, a virtual step-out blocking method of VSG for improving the transient stability is proposed. In addition, the necessity of governor control of VSG in a large-scale power system is discussed. Finally, the rated kw and kwh capacities of the battery required for realizing the VSG-model control are evaluated. © 2018 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Robust Semi-Global Leaderless Consensus and Containment control of Identical Linear systems with Imperfect Actuators

This paper investigates both the robust semi-global leaderless consensus problem and the robust semi-global containment control problem for a group of identical linear systems with imperfect actuators. The imperfect actuators are characterized by nonlinearities such as saturation and dead zone and there input output relationships are not precisely known. The dynamics of follower agents are also affected by the input additive disturbances. Low-and-high gain feedback consensus protocols are constructed to solve these problems. More specifically, it is shown that robust semi-global leaderless consensus can be achieved over a connected undirected graph and robust semi-global containment control can be achieved when each follower agent has access to the information of at least one leader agent. Numerical simulation illustrates the theoretical results.

Range verification of therapeutic proton beam is crucial in proton therapy to confirm the irradiation field for ensuring effects and safety of the treatment. The irradiation field reconstruction using prompt gamma-rays generated from excited nuclides by proton beam has being studied for the purpose of precision medicine. A simulation tool based on fundamental physics processes employs an important role to understand intermediate relationship between physics interactions and detected observables, and to optimize a detector system with its analysis method. Previously, we reported on the simulation study about an irradiation field reconstruction by using prompt gamma-rays of whole energy range. In this study, we analyzed the energy spectrum and reconstructed the image of irradiation field by using prompt gamma-rays corresponding to a particular energy peak. The simulation was performed for proton beam with a target placed at the isocenter by using Geant4 based particle therapy system simulation framework. A simple tubular detector was placed around the target, in which the kinetic energy and the detected position of each gamma-ray were recorded. The irradiation field was then reconstructed in the ordered subset expectation maximization method. The reconstructed irradiation fields were compared with the dose distribution in the target. The peak positions of these depth distributions were compared each other and discussed about the range verification of therapeutic proton beam.

We present a new simple approach to extend the admissible region of a saturated control law for discrete-time linear systems under state and input constraints. The approach is based on the interpolation of a given, performance driven, control law and a low-gain controller. The latter is designed such that its admissible set has maximum volume. The interpolation does not require on-line numerical optimization, and an analytical formula for the controller is given. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the control technique. © 2018

Permafrost degradation substantially affects water resources within the cryosphere. It is crucial to elucidate the dynamics of water availability influenced by both permafrost degradation and climate change to fully comprehend the water cycle in cold regions, such as the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau (QTP). While existing studies have established the hydrological consequences of permafrost degradation through altered soil hydraulics and water storage capacity, the complex interplay between thawing permafrost and vegetation dynamics—particularly their synergistic regulation of precipitation partitioning and runoff generation through root-zone water accessibility—are poorly understood, creating critical knowledge gaps in predicting long-term water availability trajectories. In this study, we explore the influence of permafrost-vegetation interactions on regional water availability on the QTP by integrating the effects of permafrost degradation on vegetation into the Budyko-Fu model. Our results reveal a consistent increase in surface runoff ( R ) of the permafrost regions from 1981 to 2100, predominantly driven by rising precipitation. However, shifts in vegetation patterns, prompted by permafrost degradation, significantly modify hydrological partitioning, leading to non-monotonic variations in the runoff to precipitation ratio ( R/P ). Notably, early-stage permafrost thaw enhances vegetation growth and evapotranspiration, which results in a decrease in R/P . Conversely, deeper permafrost thaw ( e.g ., beyond the root zone of vegetation) can lead to vegetation degradation, which subsequently reduces evapotranspiration and consequently increasing the R/P ratio. These findings underscore the pivotal role of vegetation in regulating the hydrological cycle and affecting water availability in permafrost-affected regions.

We assessed the association between a genome-wide polygenic risk score (PRS) developed for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) risk and mutation on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in 998 East Asian never-smoking female LUAD cases (518 EGFR-positive; 480 EGFR-negative) and 4,544 never-smoking controls using case-case and multinomial regression analyses. We found that the PRS was more strongly associated with EGFR-positive LUAD compared to EGFR-negative LUAD, where the association between the fourth quartile of the PRS and EGFR-positive LUAD (OR=8.63, 95% CI:5.67, 13.14) was significantly higher than the association between the fourth quartile of the PRS with EGFR-negative LUAD (OR=3.50, 95% CI: 2.44, 5.00) (p-heterogeneity=3.66x10). Our findings suggest that germline genetic susceptibility may be differentially associated with LUAD in never-smoking female East Asian patients depending on the cancer's mutation status, which may have important public health and clinical implications.

Rice hull which is one of the agricultural wastes in Japan has been demanded to reuse as the industrial materials. Rice hull silica carbon (RHSC) material, made from rice hull is produced by mixing rice hull powder with a phenol resin, and then carbonizing and the mixture in the nitrogen gas atmosphere at high temperatures. The RHSC is a porous carbon material utilizing natural porous structure originated from the rice hull. Therefore, reduction in environmental pollution is expected by the RHSC which is inexpensive and unique. In addition, a core competence of low friction coefficient, lubrication free, and high water resistance was reported for the RHSC in previous research. However, the RHSC has low reliability of strength originated potentially from the porous structure. Since the reliability of the RHSC is evaluated by a fatigue test which is required several weeks, calculating the fatigue strength by simulation analysis is useful. In this study, fatigue strength simulation analysis in natural porous structure was figured out and the size effect which influences the strength of the material was investigated. ©2018 Soc. Mater.
