Early detection of infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can lead to effective developmental support. In clinical practice, early screening of 18-month-old infants is implemented using a parent-completed questionnaire. However, research has suggested that signs of ASD may also appear in movement characteristics during the first few months of age. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate infant movement from videos based on non-negative tensor factorization (NTF) and apply it to ASD risk assessment in the neonatal period. The proposed method applies NTF to pose data estimated from videos, and decomposes the infant's movements into multiple components while considering the linkage between body parts. In the experiment, we evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method using 36 low-risk infants and 13 high-risk infants for ASD, with the aim of applying the method to ASD risk assessment. The results showed that the proposed method captured the tendency for infants to perform different movements depending on their risk level. Machine learning analysis revealed that the proposed method identified ASD risk with an accuracy exceeding 70%, which was comparable or superior to the existing video evaluation method based on heuristically designed indicators. © 2025 IEEE.

The research object of this paper is the ankle prosthesis system based on electro-hydrostatic actuation. In the passive state, the prosthesis uses PWM wave to drive a high speed ON/OFF valve (HOV), making it equivalent to a proportional valve with a certain opening size to adjust the damping of the system and achieve a compliant control. However, due to the mechanical delay characteristics of the HOV, there are obvious nonlinear regions in the low duty cycle and high duty cycle regions, which affect the control performance of the system. This paper will discuss this problem. Using the control strategies in PWM-PFM to widen the linear region of the prosthetic system damping control, improve the system's ability to adjust the damping, and facilitate the prosthesis to better achieve active compliance control. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings. Estimation of Probability of Debonding of Steel Plates Strengthened by Bonding CFRP Plates and Its Verification by Statistical Experiment under Bending Load

Probabilistic property associated with debonding of CFRP-bonded steel plate under bending load is theoretically discussed by the use of a probabilistic model based upon a spatially random differential equation. Further, a statistical experiment for debonding of CFRP-bonded steel plate under bending load is performed to verify the theoretically estimated probabilistic property of debonding. First, a system of statically equilibrium equations is formulated to describe axial and shear forces of a steel plate bonded by a CFRP plate. Next, it is extended to a probabilistic model consisting of a system of spatially random differential equations where spatially random variation of the adhesive thickness is introduced as a random field, whose solution leads to a spatially random variation of a principal stress of the adhesive. A Monte Carlo simulation technique is then applied to estimate the probability of debonding under bending load based upon the proposed probabilistic model, where the debonding of adhesive is supposed to occur when the maximum principal stress exceeds a critical value. Further, statistical experiment is also performed to clarify the probability that the debonding of CFRP-bonded steel plates occurs under bending load. Finally, the experimental result is compared with the probability of debonding estimated through the Monte Carlo simulation. The result shows that the probability of debonding obtained through the statistical experiment can be quite well reproduced by the Monte Carlo result based upon the proposed probabilistic model. © 2022 The Society of Materials science, Japan.

Rapid dynamical pattern recognition for sampling sequences

In this paper, based on deterministic learning, we propose a method for rapid recognition of dynamical patterns consisting of sampling sequences. First, for the sequences yielded by sampling a periodic or recurrent trajectory(a dynamical pattern) generated from a nonlinear dynamical system, a sampled-data deterministic learning algorithm is employed for modeling/identification of inherent system dynamics. Second,a definition is formulated to characterize similarities between sampling sequences(dynamical patterns) based on differences in the system dynamics. Third, by constructing a set of discrete-time dynamical estimators based on the learned knowledge, similarities between the test and training patterns are measured by using the average L1 norms of synchronization errors, and general conditions for accurate and rapid recognition of dynamical patterns are given in a sampled-data framework. Finally, numerical examples are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. We demonstrate that not only a test pattern can be rapidly recognized corresponding to a similar training pattern, but also the proposed recognition conditions can be verified step by step based on historical sampling data. This makes a distinction compared with the previous work on rapid dynamical pattern recognition for continuous-time nonlinear systems, in which the recognition conditions are difficult to be verified by using continuous-time signals.

As part of the research and development of shallow methane hydrate recovery and production technologies for deep-sea environments, the potential use of membrane structures for capturing methane seeps while mining and for pollution prevention to reduce environmental impact of mining has been investigated. In our previous study, we developed a visualization system that replicates the methane hydrate environment on the seafloor in a laboratory setting. This system has been utilized to conduct numerous laboratory experiments, providing insights into the behavior of methane bubbles with a hydrate film on their surface. These bubbles differ from conventional methane bubbles in their interaction with various membrane materials. The pure water is utilized in these experiments to eliminate the impact of complex variables present in sea water, such as dissolved gases, ions, and particles. To validate the applicability of the obtained characteristics to the actual sea environment, comparison tests should be conducted in the deep sea, where methane hydrate exists. In this study, we have developed a deep sea remote experiment system that has capabilities to execute analogous tests in situ within a deep sea environment. The design of the system and some results obtained at depths of approximately 1000 meters are presented in this paper.

Bipolar medium-voltage dc (MVDC) distribution systems are of great interests nowadays due to its high availability and reliability. A bipolar MVDC grid can be established by the installation of power-balancers or directly by converters with inherent bipolar operation capability to avoid the extra cost and volume. Therefore, this paper proposes a modular multilevel dc-dc converter (MMDC) with inherent bipolar operation capability for the interconnection of bipolar MVDC grids and LVDC girds. Considering that the MMDC is normally only capable of operating with monopole MVDC distribution systems due to the symmetric structure and operation scheme, a center-Tapped high-frequency interface transformer is employed on the MV side of the MMDC. Based on the concept of the flux dc-bias cancellation, a dedicated operation method is proposed, whereby the power flows of the two MVDC poles can be regulated independently with a simple control scheme, and no penalty of increased current rating is imposed on the semiconductor devices or the interface transformer compared to the conventional MMDC with monopole operation. Additionally, the MMDC can realize single-pole operation in case one pole is faulty and deliver at least 50% of the rated power capacity, which significantly enhance the reliability and availability of the power delivery. The validity of the proposed bipolar operation scheme of the MMDC has been verified by both simulations and experiments with a down-scale prototype. © 2017 CPSS.

Recently, an alternative pressure mattress has been proposed to prevent pressure ulcers. In this study, we aim to design a control system for body pressure distribution using the mattress. This study focuses on modeling the dynamics between the body pressure distribution and the mattress. As modeling based on first principles is challenging, we identify the model from experimental data. However, when high-dimensional data such as body pressure distribution are directly used for identification, the model accuracy can deteriorate. Therefore, we need to determine the suitable model structure or dataset. Herein, we examined how the prediction accuracy of body pressure distribution varies with the dataset and model structure. We also proposed a method for representing the model as the dynamics of the parameters of the Gaussian Mixture Model to suppress the estimated parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to propose the body pressure model as dynamics of the parameters of the Gaussian Mixture Model.

Data Informativity under Data Perturbation

Data informativity provides a theoretical foundation for determining whether collected data are sufficiently informative to achieve specific control objectives in data-driven control frameworks. In this study, we investigate the data informativity subject to noise characterized by quadratic matrix inequalities (QMIs), which describe constraints through matrix-valued quadratic functions. We introduce a generalized noise model, referred to as data perturbation, under which we derive necessary and sufficient conditions formulated as tractable linear matrix inequalities for data informativity with respect to stabilization and performance guarantees via state feedback, as well as stabilization via output feedback. Our proposed framework encompasses and extends existing analyses that consider exogenous disturbances and measurement noise, while also relaxing several restrictive assumptions commonly made in prior work. A central challenge in the data perturbation setting arises from the non-convexity of the set of systems consistent with the data, which renders standard matrix S-procedure techniques inapplicable. To resolve this issue, we develop a novel matrix S-procedure that does not rely on convexity of the system set by exploiting geometric properties of QMI solution sets. Furthermore, we derive sufficient conditions for data informativity in the presence of multiple noise sources by approximating the combined noise effect through the QMI framework. The proposed results are broadly applicable to a wide class of noise models and subsume several existing methodologies as special cases. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To reveal the mechanism why hydrodynamic lubrication of SiC/water system is maintained through the repeated formation and removal processes of tribolayer, we performed molecular dynamics sliding simulation. Our results revealed that tribochemical reactions of amorphous SiC (a-SiC) with water form tribolayer consisting of silica-based layer and carbon layer, and constant supply of silica-based layer by continuous tribochemical reactions is required to maintain hydrodynamic lubrication, whereas the carbon layer prevents adhesion. However, if carbon layer covers the entire interface, it would prevent hydrodynamic lubrication. We proposed here that uneven distribution of chemical bonds in the a-SiC substrate is important for maintaining hydrodynamic lubrication and low friction, because such distribution continuously forms the silica-based layer and carbon layer at the same time. © 2024, The Authors.
