A segmental distance for rooted labeled unordered trees is the edit distance such that the insertion and the deletion in the edit operations are allowed to either the root or the leaves. In this paper, we design the algorithm of computing the segmental distance for rooted labeled caterpillars in O(n+h2σ) time under the unit cost function, where n is the maximum number of vertices, h is the maximum height and σ is the number of labels, whereas the problem of computing the segmental distance for rooted labeled unordered trees is MAX SNP-hard. © 2022 IEEE.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of Pollutant Dispersion Around a High-Rise Building: Impact of Surrounding Buildings

Understanding the detailed mechanism of pollutant dispersion in urban areas is a critical aspect of air quality control in residential areas. In this study, wind tunnel measurements and large eddy simulation were used for the analysis of the pollutant dispersion around a high-rise building for an isolated case and also a case when the central high-rise building surrounded several low-rise buildings. The pollutant was released on the leeward façade of the high-rise building at the pedestrian height. The presence of the surrounding buildings significantly alters the pollutant transfer mechanism around the high-rise building. In the surrounded case, the pollutant in the wake region shifted vertically toward the roof of the high-rise building. As a result, at a location of 2/3 of the high-rise building height, the mean concentration is five times larger than the isolated case, which means the residents on higher floors experience more pollution concentration in the case of the surrounded case even though they are located much higher than the canyon rooftop and the pollutant source. In both cases, the contribution of the turbulent diffusive flux in the streamwise direction is comparable with the mean convective flux while they have opposite directions. Detailed analyses of the pollutant mass transfer rate budget around different control volumes around the high-rise buildings highlighted the effect of the surrounding buildings. It is concluded that there is a risk of underestimating pollutant concentrations around a high-rise building, especially near the upper floors if the surrounding buildings are not properly considered. © 2023, The Authors. This study explores linear encryption techniques to protect against information-based stealthy attacks on re-mote state estimation. Utilizing smart sensors equipped with local Kalman filters, the system transmits innovations rather than raw measurements via wireless networks. However, this transmission is susceptible to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. To safeguard against these stealthy threats, encryption and decryption modules are integrated into the system. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of the encryption strategy when faced with information-based stealthy attacks. A key contribution of this paper is the adoption of the most comprehensive attack models, moving away from the conventional reliance on innovation-based linear attack models. Our results demonstrate that the proposed linear encryption approach effectively mitigates stealthy attacks under certain mild conditions. The efficacy of the encryption is further validated through numerical examples, corroborating the theoretical advancements presented in this paper.

Convolution neural networks (CNNs) are essential in many machine learning tasks. Current deep learning frameworks and compilers usually treat the neutral network as a DAG (directed acyclic graph) of tensor operations and execute them one at a time according to a topological order, which respects the dependency in the DAG. There are two issues with this general approach. First, new CNNs have branch structures, and they form complex DAGs. These DAGs make it hard to find a good topology sort order that schedules operators within a GPU. Second, modern hardware has high computational power, which makes running operators sequentially on modern hardware under-utilizes resources. These two issues open the possibility of exploiting inter-operator parallelism, i.e., parallelism among independent operators in the DAG, to utilize the hardware resources more efficiently. In this work, we formally define the DAG scheduling problem that addresses the resource contention and propose an early-start-time-first algorithm with two heuristic rules for exploiting parallelism between independent operators. Experimental results show that our method improves the performance by up to 3.76× on RTX 3090 compared to the sequential execution.

This paper proposes a decentralized sliding mode control approach to the voltage regulation problem in a DC microgrid consisting of distributed generation units interconnected with each other through resistive-inductive power lines and supplying unknown nonlinear loads. In particular, the port-Hamiltonian structure of the system suggests the design of a suitable sliding manifold such that the system on this manifold exhibits desired passivity properties. This approach simplifies the control design and relaxes some restrictive assumptions required by other controllers proposed in the literature, while offering satisfactory performance.

Distributed Non-Bayesian Learning for Games with Incomplete Information

We consider distributed learning problem in games with an unknown cost-relevant parameter, and aim to find the Nash equilibrium while learning the true parameter. Inspired by the social learning literature, we propose a distributed non-Bayesian rule to learn the parameter (each agent maintains a belief on the parameter and updates the belief according to the received noisy cost), combined with best response dynamics for strategy update. The difficulty of the analysis lies mainly in the fact that the parameter learning process and strategy update process are coupled. We first prove that agents' beliefs converge to a common belief and the strategy profiles converge to a Nash equilibrium under this common belief. On this basis, we further show that the beliefs eventually concentrate on the true parameter. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Predictive evaluation of hydrogen diffusion coefficient on Pd(111) surface by path integral simulations using neural network potential

Quantum diffusion of hydrogen (H) on palladium (Pd) (111) was studied using two types of path integral simulations: quantum transition state theory (QTST) and ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD). The use of an artificial neural network potential trained by density functional theory calculations has made it feasible to perform path integral simulations considering nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) of a many-body Pd-H system with ab initio accuracy. The QTST result has shown a clear non-Arrhenius behavior in the diffusion coefficient (D) of H below the temperature of 150–200 K due to the NQEs. Comparing the D on Pd surface and bulk Pd, it was found that surface and bulk diffusion are competitive at high temperature. Consistent with this, it was observed in the RPMD simulation at 800 K that a part of the quantum trajectories of H on the surface bifurcates to the Pd subsurface. As the temperature decreases, the surface diffusion becomes much faster than the bulk diffusion. Furthermore, distinct quantum behaviors of H were identified at the surface and within the bulk. The D values obtained from this study using a “flexible” Pd surface model differed considerably from those previously reported using “frozen” Pd surface models, indicating an important contribution from Pd vibrations coupled with H diffusion.

Resilient distributed optimization under mobile malicious attacks

This article addresses the distributed optimization problem in the presence of malicious adversaries that can move within the network and induce faulty behaviors in the attacked nodes. We first investigate the vulnerabilities of a consensus-based secure distributed optimization protocol under mobile adversaries. Then, a modified resilient distributed optimization algorithm is proposed. We develop conditions on the network structure for both complete and non-complete directed graph cases, under which the proposed algorithm guarantees that the estimates by regular nodes converge to the convex combination of the minimizers of their local functions. Simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Gram positive cocci occur as not only singles but also arrangements of pairs, tetorads, chains and clusters in Gram stained smears images. In this paper, we detect Gram positive cocci based on the annotation along singles, which is an annotation along a single bacterium, and the annotation along arrangements, which is an annotation along arranged bacteria. Here, we avoid to the difference of the number of regions obtained by the annotations both decreasing the number of regions by annotation along singles and increasing the number of regions by annotation along arrangements.
