We consider distributionally robust optimal control of stochastic linear systems under signal temporal logic (STL) chance constraints when the disturbance distribution is unknown. By assuming that the underlying predicate functions are Lipschitz continuous and the noise realizations are drawn from a distribution having a concentration of measure property, we first formulate the underlying chance-constrained control problem as stochastic programming with constraints on expectations and propose a solution using a distributionally robust approach based on the Wasserstein metric. We show that by choosing a proper Wasserstein radius, the original chance-constrained optimization can be satisfied with a user-defined confidence level. A numerical example illustrates the efficacy of the method.

For complex dynamic systems, due to their intrinsic nonlinearity, time-varying and multivariate interdependence, they usually contain multiple inputs and multiple outputs, and the complex interactions and dynamics within the time and space of the system are also complex for the study of complex system physical properties. Therefore, in order to study complex dynamic systems, obtain their physical properties, and describe and predict the system behavior, this paper adopts a novel data-driven approach with the probing excitation method. The probing excitation method proposed in this paper distinguishes itself from traditional machine learning methods. Complex dynamic systems are usually black-box systems or partially black-box systems, while traditional methods for black-box systems construct black-box models that lack physical interpretability. The method in this paper enables the detection of physical properties of complex dynamical systems by selecting inputs and outputs and constructing models that reflect the physical properties. The probing excitation method involves selecting one input and one output of a complex dynamic system to build a model with interpretability that reflects the physical properties or some of the physical properties of this system. Repeat this process to develop multiple models and integrate them for comprehensive analysis. In this way, we can capture the system's physical characteristics, enhancing interpretability and enabling the prediction and control of system behavior.

Sensor network localization (SNL) problems require determining the physical coordinates of all sensors in a network. This process relies on the global coordinates of anchors and the available measurements between non-anchor and anchor nodes. Attributed to the intrinsic non-convexity, obtaining a globally optimal solution to SNL is challenging, as well as implementing corresponding algorithms. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex multi-player potential game for a generic SNL problem to investigate the identification condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) therein, where the global NE represents the global solution of SNL. We employ canonical duality theory to transform the non-convex game into a complementary dual problem. Then we develop a conjugation-based algorithm to compute the stationary points of the complementary dual problem. On this basis, we show an identification condition of the global NE: the stationary point of the proposed algorithm satisfies a duality relation. This paper presents a simple yet effective design of a platform to automate the task of shellfish aquaculture, specifically pearl oysters. Compared to traditional methods, our platform can eliminate the tedious task of cleaning the pearl oysters due to fouling. Inspired by the low and high tide characteristics of the intertidal zone, our platform employs an air-water displacement mechanism to periodically float pearl oysters above the water's surface, exposing fouling organisms to air and sunlight. While pearl oysters have developed the ability to stay alive during low tide, these fouling organisms cannot survive after prolonged exposure, thus preventing them from developing. Additionally, the platform provides an alternative approach to grow not only pearl oysters but also various types of shellfish, consequently benefiting the aquaculture industry. We introduce the design of the platform and provide a comprehensive analysis. We also demonstrate the practical deployment of the platform for cultivating pearl oysters.

With the evolution of Industry 4.0, next-generation wearable devices have come under the spotlight, where organic electronics are playing an important role due to their flexible form factor, high performance, and integration capability. Designed to conform to soft and dynamic surfaces, flexible organic photodetectors (OPDs) and integrated arrays stand out for their application potential in non-invasive biosensing and bio-imaging, with inherent advantages in mitigating motion artifacts – a notable limitation of traditional, rigid photodetector systems. Leveraging the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum's capability for deep skin penetration and minimal scattering in human tissues, flexible NIR OPDs are especially capable of precise diagnostics with enhanced signal quality. The adaptable form factor further broadens their potential for applications in human-environment interaction, marking a notable shift towards more responsive and intelligent wearable technologies. This review summarizes the latest challenges and breakthroughs of flexible NIR OPDs, emphasizing effective strategies toward flexible and high-performance device units and integrated systems. We further discuss the remaining challenges and outlook on the vast potential of flexible NIR OPDs in reshaping our interaction with our surroundings.

Learning of Nash Equilibria in Risk-Averse Games

This paper considers risk-averse learning in convex games involving multiple agents that aim to minimize their individual risk of incurring significantly high costs. Specifically, the agents adopt the conditional value at risk (CVaR) as a risk measure with possibly different risk levels. To solve this problem, we propose a first-order risk-averse leaning algorithm, in which the CVaR gradient estimate depends on an estimate of the Value at Risk (VaR) value combined with the gradient of the stochastic cost function. Although estimation of the CVaR gradients using finitely many samples is generally biased, we show that the accumulated error of the CVaR gradient estimates is bounded with high probability. Moreover, assuming that the risk-averse game is strongly monotone, we show that the proposed algorithm converges to the risk-averse Nash equilibrium. Development of Soft Magnetic Composites for Improving the Efficiency of Electric Vehicle's Wireless Power Transfer

Integrating the wireless power transfer (WPT) system into pavement is an effective way to solve the inconvenience of electric vehicles charging, accelerating the growth of ownership of EVs to achieve net carbon zero in transportation. However, the existence of a cement paving layer between coils was a negative impact factor. Here, two types of ferrite powders were separately mixed into the cement to prepare soft magnetic composite (SMC) material to enhance the coupling degree of coils. The magnetic and mechanical performance of the composite were tested by vibrating sample magnetometer and compressive and flexural strength. Furthermore, to explore the optimal layout of the magnetized pavement structure, nine pavement layouts were designed based on the distribution of magnetic flux. Finally, the performance of the WPT system was validated. Results showed the higher the ferrite powder content, the stronger its magnetic properties but the weaker its mechanical performance. It was recommended to place SMC in the area of pavement inside the empty core and outside the coil. By incorporating N/C-10 material, the efficiency achieved the highest, 95.44%. However, considering the mechanical performance, it was recommended to use the SMC prepared with a 0.6 mass ratio of Mn-Zn ferrite powder to cement. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To understand the nanoparticle motion behaviours on a surface, we have studied to investigate the three-dimension tracking of an individual nanoparticle with nanometre localisation accuracy. In three-dimensional nanoparticle moving position, the X and Y coordinates are on the parallel plane to the surface, which their coordinates can be tracked in general microscopy. However, the Z coordinate is the nanoparticle height position perpendicularly to the surface plane, which could not be generally tracked without longitudinal scanning method. In this paper, the polystyrene 100 nm standard particles were used to investigate the three-dimensional tracking. The individual standard nanoparticles were fixed on the tip, which was vertically travelled with the piezo actuator for movement control on the third dimension to verify the actual height Z. Our developed optical microscopy apparatus has been applying multi-wavelength evanescent fields, and obtaining multi scattering light intensities from the observed nanoparticles near to surface. Commonly, the X and Y coordinates of nanoparticle were determined by the centre of mass of each scattering light intensity. The height Z was investigated from the integration of the detected scattering intensities of each wavelength. By using our method, the height Z uncertainty could be measured approximately less than ±20 nm, and the penetration height measurability was approximately 250 nm far from the reference surface. Consequently, we could three-dimensionally track the individual standard nanoparticle in recording speed higher than 50 frames per second. Photochemical cell membrane perforation is a technique that introduces substances directly into large numbers of cells and has a low cytotoxic effect. Among several cell modification techniques, this method is more efficient, since it can perforate a group of cells rather than an individual cell. It is also characterized by a high cell survival rate because the perforation is performed using oxidative treatment so that cells can repair themselves. To further expand this technology on a larger scale, we aimed to shift from batch processing to flow processing. In particular, the perforator, which had a flat shape in the past, was changed to a cylindrical shape, and a mechanism was developed for cell modification by passing a mixture of cells and transfection components between the perforator and two rotating cylinders on the receiving side.

In this article, we study the standing-wave solutions to a class of systems of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Our target is all the standard forms of the NLS systems, with two unknowns, that have a common linear part and cubic gauge-invariant nonlinearities and that yield a Hamiltonian with a coercive kinetic-energy part. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the existence of the ground state. Further, we give a characterization of the shape of the ground state. It will turn out that the ground states are scalar-type, i.e., multiples of a constant vector and a scalar function. We further give a sufficient condition on the existence of excited states of the same form. The stability and the instability of the ground states are also studied. To this end, we introduce an abstract treatment on the study of scalar-type standing-wave solution that applies to a wide class of NLS systems with homogeneous energy-subcritical nonlinearity.
