Accurate machining process monitoring (MPM) is crucial to ensure manufacturing process stability and efficiency. In particular, tool wear, surface roughness, and cutting force comprise primary elements of MPM, which are physically interconnected and significantly affect machining quality and productivity. Hence, MPM should be performed through comprehensive consideration of the primary elements and their interactions. Yet, there is a lack of a unified approach to MPM that holistically predicts, which limits the practical applicability of MPM in real-world machining processes. Therefore, this work proposes a novel deep multi-task learning (MTL)-based method that integrates primary MPM elements by simultaneously predicting tool wear, surface roughness, and cutting force. To this end, the proposed method develops a probabilistic multitask likelihood that considers task uncertainty for seamless end-to-end training. The proposed method's efficacy in MPM is validated with real-world datasets from an end-milling process of Ti-6Al-4V. The comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method consistently shows superior prediction performance compared to existing single-task and MTL methods, indicating its effectiveness in real-world MPM. © 2024 IEEE.

To effectively interact with the physical world, an intelligent robot is required to have the ability to obtain the detailed features of an unknown object. Visual devices are commonly used to detect the global geometry of an object;however, detailed information such as surface properties cannot be identified using these devices. The current study proposes an efficient haptic exploration method to recognize the physical properties of surfaces using an intelligent fingertip. Our surface-following algorithm utilizes the normal force vector and the tangential force vector at the contact point between the fingertip and the target object to predict the moving direction and implement the surface exploration. And a correction index K is introduced to adjust the sliding velocity. The algorithm is proved to be robust and high performance both in simulation and lab experiments. Finally, we propose and explore a haptic prediction neural network, which enables our robot to have an accurate feel through physical interaction. In the classification experiment of four types of objects with different surface properties, the average accuracy of the proposed model is 90.2%. © 2023 IEEE.

To address the slow convergence speed of genetic algorithms (GAs) in solving the mobile robot path planning problem, this study proposes a genetic algorithm with quality of population evolution (QPEGA). In QPEGA, the population is divided into two subpopulations based on the quality of individuals, and the quality of each subpopulation is defined. The crossover and mutation probabilities of each subpopulation are dynamically adjusted to enhance the algorithm's solving quality. Additionally, the optimal parameter combination for the algorithm is determined using the orthogonal experimental method. To evaluate the performance of QPEGA, a comparison is made with standard GA and adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA). The planning results are subjected to Friedman test at a 95% confidence interval, and the experimental findings demonstrate that QPEGA outperforms the comparative algorithms and exhibits significant advantages in solving the path planning problem. © 2024 The Authors.

One way to increase solar photovoltaic penetration in the grid is management of voltage fluctuations. This is because a photovoltaic plant cannot be interconnected to the grid if it causes voltage violations. Voltage violation is where voltage exceeds the acceptable range. Often, grid operators request photovoltaic plant owners to regulate voltage sufficiently with expensive and space-consuming static Var compensators. Unfortunately, this sometimes makes the project less feasible. This paper argues that there are better ways to regulate voltage. We ran a simulation with a 70 MWp photovoltaic plant as an addition to the grid. Without voltage regulation, voltage violations were found to be significant. This paper found that oversizing the inverter sufficiently would remove all voltage violations without deploying a static Var compensator. This is often a cheaper and space-saving solution for voltage management. This paper argues that economics and spatial efficiency of reactive power compensation devices is key to increasing photovoltaic penetration.

Visualization of discussions using diagrams is effective in facilitating efficient debates. However, because actual debates involve many conflicts, the diagrams that represent them tend to be complex in structure. Therefore, we use AF and BAF, which have simple structure and semantics to extract arguments that may be included in conclusions of debates, to support real-time debate progression and to verify the logical structure of debates. For this purpose, we propose a "BAF diagram summarization method" that recognizes and reduces subgraphs that represent local arguments about related sub-issues from these diagrams. The final output of this method is a diagram in the form of "Reliability based Argumentation Framework (RAF)", which consists less nodes and less links between them. RAF is an extensional model of AF in which each argument is assigned an "argument class" based on its feasibility, and semantics for RAF is defined by argument classes of arguments and attack relations between them. The RAF semantics has the role of preserving the semantic information in the BAF diagram summarization method. This is because by computing the semantics of the resulting RAF, it is possible to capture some of the important information in the semantics of the original BAF. Furthermore, we developed an on-line discussion support tool that implements this method, and visualize the results of user input. © 2024, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. In dynamic optimization problems where optimal solutions change over time, traditional ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms face limitations. This study explores the adaptation of multi-colony ACO algorithms, known for their enhanced search capabilities in stationary problems, to tackle optimization problems in dynamic environments. Various strategies for exchanging information between colonies, which is a critical factor influencing algorithm performance, are investigated. Using the dynamic traveling salesman problem as a foundation, we generate test cases to reflect real-world complexities. Our results on a set of problem instances reveal that the choice of communication strategy between colonies significantly impacts the adaptability and efficiency of multi-colony ACO algorithms in tracking moving optimum. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose an audio spectrogram transformer (AST) for sequential inference and evaluate its real- time performance. ASTs are pre-trained in a self-supervised manner, such as masked autoencoding, and the pre-trained models are well-performing in sound event detection. However, the existing architectures are designed for offline inference, wherein the entire signal serves as the input, and are unsuitable for sequential inference as they require the input sequence to be split into short chunks. In this study, we design a sequential AST based on a memory token (MT-AST) and its training method and conduct comprehensive experiments regarding the chunk length configuration. Specifically, we extend the offline AST with special tokens that memorize past signal information so that the network avoids repetitive inference of the same signal. While our model has limited inference capability, we train it using knowledge distillation from BEATs, a large-scale pre-trained model. Compared to the offline architecture, our model achieved higher performance by pre-training with AudioSet and fine-tuning for the URBAN-SED and DESED datasets. In addition, we conducted experiments to investigate the input chunk length considering performance-latency trade-offs and revealed the optimal configurations. We revealed that our model requires at least one extra second of input to maintain the performance.

A comfortable indoor working circumstance can be accomplished by a ventilation and air conditioning system. There are several factors influencing the quality of indoor air, with the insufficiency of ventilation accounting for over 50% of the overall considerations. While traditional air conditioner is able to fulfill the needs of ventilation and indoor temperature control, low-efficiency and high energy consumption no longer align with the current sustainable and energy-efficiency goals. Thus, the development of energy-saving and high-efficiency air conditioning systems is crucial for realizing green and efficient building practices. Evaporative cooling technology, specifically dew-point evaporative cooling, has garnered extensive attention as an efficient cooling method and a candidate for environmentally friendly and high-performance alternatives to traditional air conditioning systems. This article investigates the thermodynamic losses involved in a dew-point evaporative cooling system using the counter-flow design. Detailed mathematical models for the evaporative cooler along with the entropy generation in the channels are developed. The model facilitates calculations of (1) the entropy generation distribution in different layers within the system and (2) the entropy generation of each layer and the whole system under various input conditions. Approaching the system from the second law of thermodynamics perspective, this model serves as a guide for selecting the optimal operating conditions, thus promoting the widespread application and commercialization of dew-point evaporative cooling systems with the counter-flow structure. © 2024 by ASME.

The pursuit of high-performance electronic devices has driven the research focus toward 2D semiconductors with high electron mobility and suitable band gaps. Previous studies have demonstrated that quasi-2D Bi2O2Se (BOSe) has remarkable physical properties and is a promising candidate for further exploration. Building upon this foundation, the present work introduces a novel concept for achieving nonvolatile and reversible control of BOSe’s electronic properties. The approach involves the epitaxial integration of a ferroelectric PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) layer to modify BOSe’s band alignment. Within the BOSe/PZT heteroepitaxy, through two opposite ferroelectric polarization states of the PZT layer, we can tune the Fermi level in the BOSe layer. Consequently, this controlled modulation of the electronic structure provides a pathway to manipulate the electrical properties of the BOSe layer and the corresponding devices. © 2024 The Authors. Adaptive Grasping of Moving Objects in Dense Clutter via Global-to-Local Detection and Static-to-Dynamic Planning

Robotic grasping is facing a variety of real-world uncertainties caused by non-static object states, unknown object properties, and cluttered object arrangements. The difficulty of grasping increases with the presence of more uncertainties, where commonly used learning-based approaches struggle to perform consistently across varying conditions. In this study, we integrate the idea of similarity matching to tackle the challenge of grasping novel objects that are simultaneously in motion and densely cluttered using a single RGBD camera, where multiple uncertainties coexist. We achieve this by shifting visual detection from global to local states and operating grasp planning from static to dynamic scenes. Notably, we introduce optimization methods to enhance planning efficiency for this time-sensitive task. Our proposed system can adapt to various object types, arrangements and movement speeds without the need for extensive training, as demonstrated by real-world experiments.
