Decision-making for autonomous vehicles is critical to achieving safe and efficient autonomous driving. In recent years, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques have emerged as the most promising way to enable intelligent decision-making. However, DRL with 'black box' nature is not widely understood by humans, thus hindering their social acceptance. In this paper, we combine SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) and random forest (RF) techniques to bring transparency to decision-making obtained by DRL. Specifically, we first implement decision-making of autonomous vehicles following in discrete action space based on DRL algorithm with the goal of safety and efficiency. Then we use the SHAP technique to simplify the feature space, which shows that relative distance, longitudinal speed of the ego vehicle, and longitudinal speed of the proceeding vehicle have a critical impact on vehicle following task. Finally, we collect the state-action pairs generated by the DRL model and perform feature filtering, and fit the decision model with an interpretable RF model. The simulation results show that the RF model achieves the behavioral explanation of autonomous vehicle following. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the activation functions appropriate to detect bacteria from Gram stained smears images by YOLOv8. First, we detect bacteria by replacing all the occurrences of the default activation function SiLU at the convolution layers in YOLOv8 with other activation functions. Next, by focusing on the activation functions providing higher performance than SiLU to detect bacteria, we investigate which of occurrences of SiLU in several convolution layers in YOLOv8 replacing with the activation functions improves the results to detect bacteria. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we detect bacteria from Gram stained smears images by the object detectors of SSD, M2Det, RT-DETR and YOLOv8. Then, we show that SSD and M2Det are not appropriate for detecting bacteria. Also we show that RT-DETR with pre-training and the variation of YOLOv8 shifting convolution layers are more appropriate to detect bacteria than standard YOLOv8. © 2024 IEEE.

Postural stability is a significant aspect that needs to be investigated to prevent the risk of injuries and falls in all age groups. Moreover, developing reliable techniques and feedback modalities to enhance the posture control evaluation is crucial. The study investigates the effects of incorporating self-simulated gaming exercises with haptic feedback on posture control in young adults. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: a control group (n=10) which performed conventional squatting within prescribed time intervals; an intervention group A (n=9), which engaged in virtual reality (VR)-based squatting; and an intervention group B (n=9), which performed squatting in a VR environment while wearing a soft actuator suit. The gaming interface dynamically optimizes the difficulty of squatting based on the user’s knee tremor. We evaluated several center of pressure (COP) parameters: displacement, root mean square (RMS), area, median frequency, and mean velocity in the mediolateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) directions. Statistical analysis using ANOVA revealed significant effects in the ML displacement between the control group and intervention group B (p = 0.027), ML RMS between the control group and intervention group A (p = 0.001), and between the control group and intervention group B (p = 0.001). Additionally, significant differences were observed in the circumference area between the control group and intervention group A (p = 0.035) and between the control group and intervention group B (p = 0.001). The findings indicate that the developed prototype, which provides visual and haptic guidance, shows promise as a tool for improving postural control.

The wavelength instability of Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers in telecommunication degrades system performance. While DFB lasers are popular for their stability in singlewavelength output generation, thermal fluctuation severely impacts them. Excessive heat also causes complete device failure. However, effective thermal management is a critical challenge in the design and operation of DFB lasers. The interaction among multiple properties of electrical, optical, and thermal domains makes it more challenging. To address this challenge, this study introduces a Unified MultiPhysics Simulation ( UMPS ) model that integrates electrical, optical, and thermal dynamics into a single, comprehensive framework. This innovative approach demonstrates the capability of accurate predictions of temperature distributions, identification of thermal hotspots, and optimization of thermal management strategies. The simulation conducted by the UMPS model captures both steady-state and transient thermal behaviors, providing valuable insights into how photonic devices respond to dynamic operating conditions. The proposed UMPS model not only advances the understanding of thermal dynamics in DFB lasers but also offers a versatile tool that can be applied to other photonic devices facing similar challenges. This model can potentially impact the design of next-generation photonic systems, ensuring their efficiency and reliability in increasingly demanding applications.

In order to compare rooted labeled trees (trees, for short), in this paper, we introduce an ancestral-path descendant-labels (APDL, for short) histogram distance as the L1 distance between histograms of triples consisting of the path from the root to v, the label of v and the multiset of labels in the descendant of v for every vertex v. Then, we show that the APDL histogram distance can be computed in linear time with respect to the number of vertices in trees and it is a metric. Furthermore, we compare APDL histogram distance with the isolated-subtree distance for real data. © 2024 IEEE.

The development of turbulent combustion models for a three-feed non-premixed flame is essential for the research of gas-turbine in the oxy-fuel integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system. The quasi-two-dimensional flamelet models are considered effective and accurate substitutes for the two-dimensional flamelet model, however, there are still many aspects worth further investigations in terms of each dimension in the flamelet library. The considerations of heat loss, the presumed probability density function (PDF), and the resolution of the diluent fraction in large-eddy simulation (LES) should be attached importance to. In this paper, heat loss, diluent fraction PDF, and resolution of the diluent fraction have been investigated. It has been shown that the current heat loss model in the flamelet equation can correctly interpret the reactions which are facilitated by high temperature. The beta-PDF used for diluent fraction results in a lower temperature in the flame zone than that of the delta-PDF as the diluent fraction fluctuation cannot be overlooked. And also, coarse resolution in terms of the diluent fraction gives interpolation error and shoud be paid attention to. © 2022 Gas Turbine Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

Self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is one of the useful methods to simulate phase separated structures of multi-component polymer systems. In this article, we propose an SCFT for semiflexible polymer melts, where the basic equations for the SCFT are derived by introducing a bending stiffness into a flexible Gaussian bead-spring model and taking its continuous limit. Our SCFT is described by a coupled modified diffusion equations for the statistical weight of the chain conformation (path integral), which is a perturbation to semiflexible chains from the flexible Gaussian chain model. Using our modified diffusion equations, we investigated the influences of the bending stiffness on the conformations of symmetric semiflexible diblock copolymer in a strongly segregated lamellar structures and on the order-disorder transition. © 2025, CC BY.

Magnetic materials are in great demand for magnetic devices such as memory, sensing, and communication applications. Magnetic crystals are physically important to know their intrinsic magnetic properties. Magnetic crystals are also technologically important and their creation has aided crystal growth signifi cantly. Rareearth orthoferrites material (RFeO3) is one of the major components used in manufacturing sophisticated gadgets. This study focuses on the growth and physical properties of the optically generated RFeO3 (R = Y, Gd and Sm) single crystals. The fl oating zone method generates single crystals of 3-20 mm/h in the optical zone. The purity of the grown materials was confi rmed from the Powder X-Ray Diff raction (PXRD) analysis. The addition of Gd to YFeO3 increases the lattice parameters of the material. Magnetic properties of the grown crystal were studied between 20-700 K. At high temperature, two anomalous eff ects were observed, one at (TSR = 480 K) due to spin reorientation and the other is antiferromagnetic (AFM) to paramagnetic transitions at (TN = 670 K). Bloch parameter was also calculated. Microhardness value decreases nonlinearly. When the applied load is greater than 1.96 N, there is a transition from palmqvist to median crack due to the plastic deformation of the crystal. controllable magnetic and mechanical characteristics will help to enhance performance of magnetic devices. © 2022 Soc. Currently, population in Japan has been aging at a speed unparalleled in other countries, and countermeasures against aging population and the worsening of disease for people with disabilities have become urgent issues. Pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia are the leading causes of death. It is said that swallowing function tends to decline from around age of 40, however it is important to keep it in good condition without deteriorating function as much as possible. The gold standard for swallowing functional evaluation is swallowing contrast testing, however X-ray exposure disables to repeat testing. In addition, Repetitive Saliva Swallowing Test (RSST) of screening test is difficult for self-check. Therefore, in this study, we develop a system to self-evaluate swallowing ability for keeping swallowing function healthy. It is proposed by applying optical flow and artificial intelligence of DeepLabcut. As a result, we were able to visualize movement of larynx during swallowing. © 2024 IEEE.
