Candle soot colloids enhance tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seed germination and seedling quality

The effect of candle soot colloids, a novel nanomaterial from candle combustion that we developed previously, on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seed germination and seedling vigor was investigated. Candle soot colloids were applied at different concentrations and hydrophobicities to tomato seeds and germination parameters and seedling vigor characteristics, such as length, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll, and carotenoids, were measured. It was found that candle soot colloids significantly improved germination speed, seedling length, and seedling fresh weight compared to the control. The adherence of soot particles to the trichomes on the seed surface, which may help seeds retain moisture and stay hydrated, was observed. The chemical composition of the soot samples was analyzed using gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry and two different chemical constituents in hydrophilic and hydrophobic soot samples that may affect seed germination were identified. A new potential use of candle soot colloids as plant growth-promoting agents and insights into the effects of nanomaterials on plant physiology and biochemistry were revealed by this study.

In recent years, due to typhoons and torrential rains caused by global warming river overflows have been increasing rapidly. A river monitoring systems using surveillance cameras is considered efficient. However, in mountainous areas the bandwidth is limited that restrict the video transmission with acceptable video quality. In this work, a novel river surveillance system is proposed with a semantic segmentation based important object extraction process followed by a VVC encoder on the river side which only encode the context of the most important objects to save encoding bits. On the other hand, unimportant context is generated on the decoder side in the server side with a VQGAN model. The simulation results show that the proposed system can not only significantly reduce the bitrate but also keep a very high subjective video quality.

Adaptive FRIT (A-FRIT) with exponential for-getting (EF) has been proposed for time-varying systems to improve the data dependence of FRIT, which is a direct data-driven tuning method. However, the EF -based method is not a reliable controller because it can cause significant degradation of the control performance and instability unless the persistent excitation (PE) condition is satisfied. To solve this problem, we propose a new A-FRIT method based on directional forgetting (DF) and exponential resetting that can forget old data without instability regardless of the PE condition. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we applied it to artificial muscle control with strong asymmetric hysteresis characteristics and evaluated its robust performance against load changes during the experiment. The experimental results show that the proposed method based on DF achieves high control performance and is robust against changes in the characteristics and/or target trajectory. The proposed method is also practical because it does not require system identification, model structure, or prior experimentation.

Atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts(SACs)on carbon supports show great promise for H_(2)O_(2) electrosynthesis,but conventional wet chemistry methods using particulate carbon blacks in powder form have limited their potential as two-electron(2^(e−))oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)***,we demonstrate high-performance Co SACs supported on a free-standing aligned carbon nanofiber(CNF)using electrospinning and arc plasma deposition(APD).Based on the surface oxidation treatment of aligned CNF and precise control of the deposition amount in a dry-based APD process,we successfully form densely populated Co SACs on aligned *** experimental analyses and density functional theory calculations,we reveal that Co SAC has a Co–N_(2)–O_(2) moiety with one epoxy group,leading to excellent 2^(e−)ORR ***,the aligned CNF significantly improves mass transfer in flow cells compared to randomly oriented CNF,showing an overpotential reduction of 30 mV and a 1.3-fold improvement(84.5%)in Faradaic efficiency,and finally achieves an outstanding production rate of 15.75 mol gcat^(−1) h^(−1) at 300 mA cm^(−2).The high-performance Co SAC supported on well-aligned CNF is also applied in an electro-Fenton process,demonstrating rapid removal of methylene blue and bisphenol F due to its exceptional 2e^(−)ORR activity.

In this study, we describe developing a learning support system for academic writing. The proposed system attempts to detect colloquial words based on subjective or objective sentences in student reports. To achieve this, we implemented a prototype machine learning model to realize effective detection. We then proposed the system design to incorporate this model into the previous colloquial words detection system. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper addresses the control synthesis of heterogeneous stochastic linear multi-agent systems with real-time allocation of signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. Based on previous work, we decompose specifications into sub-specifications on the individual agent level. To leverage the efficiency of task allocation, a heuristic filter evaluates potential task allocation based on STL robustness, and subsequently, an auctioning algorithm determines the definitive allocation of specifications. Finally, a control strategy is synthesized for each agent-specification pair using tube-based model predictive control (MPC), ensuring provable probabilistic satisfaction. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methods using a multi-shuttle scenario that highlights a promising extension to automated driving applications like vehicle routing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

In the past, omni-directional wheels, including omni-rollers, have been studied. The sphere has attracted attention as a shape with better running and overweight characteristics than this. Because of its excellent symmetry, it has been used as a wheel in omni-directional moving mechanisms. Spherical robots driven by two constrained rollers have been studied extensively, not only to derive their kinematics but also to study their validation methods. In this study, we propose a new method for verifying sphere kinematics, in which the rotational motion of spheres driving two rollers by two mouse sensors and used for estimation calculations. © 2024 IEEE.

The tangible impacts of air pollution on built heritage during COVID-19 period on the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul, Turkey

The degree of corrosion of the built cultural heritage site is examined considering the changes in air pollution trends during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul as a case study area. Key findings indicate that restricted mobility during stringent lockdown measures contributed to a noticeable reduction in PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3. This causes a temporary decrease in the surface recession rates and corrosion depths of the materials. The maximum reduction in surface recession rate for Portland limestone and White Mansfield dolomitic sandstone reaches to 7.2% and 7.5%, respectively while for cast bronze and zinc, this ratio continues to 17.1% for cast bronze and 4.8% for zinc. Except for the Sultanahmet Urban Archaeological Site, carbon steel and copper exhibit modest variances in corrosion depth, remaining below 2%. Despite the reduction during the pandemic period, Portland limestone surface recession rate and the corrosion depth values of copper, and zinc have already surpassed the 2050 thresholds, indicating that the materials are already experiencing severe damage. This implies that the Istanbul Historical Peninsula necessitates comprehensive conservation strategy plans considering the potential for increased urban and traffic mobility rather than temporary solutions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.
