Experimental investigation of the impact ethanol-biodiesel-diesel blended fuels on combustion, emission, and performance of compression ignition diesel engine

This research was directed to reduce the global diesel engine emissions and dependency on finite fossil fuel reserves. The ethanol was blended by weight ratio with commercial "B20" fuel (20% palm oil's biodiesel and 80% diesel) as B20E5 (95% B20 with 5% ethanol), B20E10 (90% B20 with 10% ethanol) and B20E20 (80% B20 with 20% ethanol). The results of the engine's performance, combustion, emission, and agglomerate particles size using blended fuels were compared with the results of based commercial B20 fuel. All fuel samples were tested on a four-cylinder direct injection diesel engine at a constant load of 140Nm with engine speeds of 1000RPM, 1500RPM and 2000RPM. When the engine speed increased, the brake-specific fuel consumption decreased, and the brake thermal efficiency increased. The B20E20 shows the highest brake-specific fuel consumption because of the low energy content of the fuel blend and the highest thermal efficiency because of a better combustion process. The ethanol-blended fuels show higher peaks of in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate than the base B20 fuel, with B20E20 as the highest. Ethanol blended fuels have significant advantages in particulate matters reduction, especially in idle engine speed. The blended fuels decreased soot and CO2 emissions and increased NOx emission. The agglomerate particles size distribution was analysed with 100 samples for each fuel by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Image J tools. The average agglomerate particle size of B20, B20E5, B20E10 and B20E20 are 0.253 µm, 0.245 µm, 0.225 µm and 0.187 µm, respectively. As conclusion, adding ethanol to diesel fuel provide strong advantages on soot reduction and higher engine efficiency due to the enrich of fuel oxygen. © 2022

Spacetime-localized response in quantum critical spin systems: Insights from holography

According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, certain quantum many-body systems in d-dimensions are equivalent to gravitational theories in (d+1)-dimensional asymptotically anti–de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. When a massless particle is sent from the AdS boundary to the bulk curved spacetime, it reaches another point of the boundary after a time lag. In the dual quantum system, it should appear as if quasiparticles have been transferred between two separated points. We theoretically demonstrate that this phenomenon, which we call “spacetime-localized response”, is actually observed in the dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model near the quantum critical point. This result suggests that, if we can realize a holographic spin system in a laboratory, the experimental probing of the emergent extra dimension is possible by applying a designed stimulus to a quantum many-body system, which is holographically equivalent to sending a massless particle through the higher-dimensional curved bulk geometry. We also discuss possible experimental realizations using Rydberg atoms in an optical tweezers array.

This paper examine the challenges posed by conventional sliding mode design in the presence of matching/nonmatching disturbances. Previously designed approaches have proven inadequate in offering an efficient and straightforward solution to non-matching disturbances. To overcome this, a novel sliding mode control strategy centered on a non-smooth integral sliding manifold is introduced. The newly proposed sliding manifold possesses two crucial characteristics. Firstly, it functions transform to a reduced-order disturbance observer by autonomously estimating the mismatched disturbances, eliminating the need for an additional observer design. Secondly, the system consistently initiates its operation from the sliding surface, eliminating any reaching phase dynamics. As a result, the system trajectory remains resilient to disturbances right from the outset. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is simulated for a coupled tank system.

The Youla-Kucera parametrization, a method to parametrize all stabilizing controllers, is developed for linear and nonlinear systems based on their stable image and kernel representations. As a stepping stone of parametrizing nonlinear controllers for contraction, we investigate in this paper stable image and kernel representations for variational systems. In particular, we construct stable inner image (resp. co-inner kernel) representations having stable left (resp. right) inverses based on differential Riccati equations for contraction analysis.

Distributed Online Bandit Nonconvex Optimization with One-Point Residual Feedback via Dynamic Regret

This paper considers the distributed online bandit optimization problem with nonconvex loss functions over a time-varying digraph. This problem can be viewed as a repeated game between a group of online players and an adversary. At each round, each player selects a decision from the constraint set, and then the adversary assigns an arbitrary, possibly nonconvex, loss function to this player. Only the loss value at the current round, rather than the entire loss function or any other information (e.g. gradient), is privately revealed to the player. Players aim to minimize a sequence of global loss functions, which are the sum of local losses. We observe that traditional multi-point bandit algorithms are unsuitable for online optimization, where the data for the loss function are not all a priori, while the one-point bandit algorithms suffer from poor regret guarantees. To address these issues, we propose a novel one-point residual feedback distributed online algorithm. This algorithm estimates the gradient using residuals from two points, effectively reducing the regret bound while maintaining O(1) sampling complexity per iteration. We employ a rigorous metric, dynamic regret, to evaluate the algorithm's performance. By appropriately selecting the step size and smoothing parameters, we demonstrate that the expected dynamic regret of our algorithm is comparable to existing algorithms that use two-point feedback, provided the deviation in the objective function sequence and the path length of the minimization grows sublinearly. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through numerical simulations. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Improved Mechanical Properties of Metallic Glass by 2D Gradient Rejuvenation

Although metallic glasses have excellent and unique mechanical properties such as high strength, elastic modulus and hardness, they exhibit a poor ductility for the industrial use. Especially in the relaxed metallic glass due to processing or insufficient cooling rate during a manufacturing process, mechanical embrittlement occurs drastically. Therefore, controlling of the relaxation state in metallic glass has been widely evolved by thermal and physical processes. The authors have reported that the less relaxed state can be recovered (rejuvenated) using a thermal process and the rejuvenated metallic glasses actually exhibit the mechanical softening with improved plasticity. Recently, the gradient distribution of rejuvenated structure can be obtained in the cylindrical metallic glass sample using the newly developed asymmetric heat treatment equipment. In such the unique structure, the shear band angle is sensitive to the relaxation state (i.e., amount of local free volume), which develops the formation and propagation of shear band in a very complex manner during the deformation process. As a result, an intrinsic work hardening and an improvement of plastic strain in metallic glass are observed. The results provide a novel way to control the relaxation state functionally and beneficial information on the industrial application of metallic glasses. ©2022 Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy.
