Anomalies in motor function and social communication skills constitute early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In recent years, researchers have paid attention to the possibility of the quantitatively evaluating infants’ social communication skills based on their eye movement. In this paper, we attempt to evaluate ASD risk using infants’ eye movement data by examining the relationship between eye movement patterns at 4, 10, and 18 months of age and ASD risk as assessed by caregivers using a checklist at 18 months of age. A total of 18 eye movement indices were calculated from eye movement data measured by an optical eye tracker. The results revealed an association between ASD risk and eye movement indices. The indices included those related to a preference for social information at 4 months of age, those related to visual exploration of images at 10 months of age, and those indices related to both preference and visual exploration at 18 months of age. These results indicate that eye movement analysis may potentially serve as a means for early screening of ASD risk.

Recently, the platform economy allows enterprises to collaborate with business partners and provide additional channels for various parties. E-commerce platforms have become integral channels for connecting suppliers with consumers. In the platform economy, agency selling and reselling are two predominant sales models that often coexist for the same product types, resulting in a competitive relationship. This study analyzes transaction data for 30,000 Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) provided by the Chinese e-commerce platforms over one month. We employ three models to compare the sales quantity and profits of manufacturers and online platforms and to identify the most efficient mode for stakeholders based on the model establishment and empirical evidence. Our findings suggest that apart from the existing channel to provide products to customers, manufacturers enter the platform which will increase the profit of platform operators. On the other hand, platform operators may also affect the profit of the manufacturers. © 2023 IEEE.

Can all variations within the unified mask-based beamformer framework achieve identical peak extraction performance?

This study investigates mask-based beamformers (BFs), which estimate filters for target sound extraction (TSE) using time-frequency masks. Although multiple mask-based BFs have been proposed, no consensus has been reached on which one offers the best target-extraction performance. Previously, we found that maximum signal-to-noise ratio and minimum mean square error (MSE) BFs can achieve the same extraction performance as the theoretical upper-bound performance, with each BF containing a different optimal mask. However, two issues remained unsolved: only two BFs were covered, excluding the minimum variance distortionless response BF;and ideal scaling (IS) was employed to ideally adjust the output scale, which is not applicable to realistic scenarios. To address these issues, this study proposes a unified framework for mask-based BFs comprising two processes: filter estimation that can cover all possible BFs and scaling applicable to realistic scenarios by employing a mask to generate a scaling reference. Based on the operators and covariance matrices used in BF formulas, all possible BFs can be classified into 12 variations, including two new ones. Optimal masks for both processes are obtained by minimizing the MSE between the target and BF output. The experimental results using the CHiME-4 dataset suggested that 1) all 12 variations can achieve the theoretical upper-bound performance, and 2) mask-based scaling can behave like IS, even when constraining the temporal mean of a non-negative mask to one. These results can be explained by considering the practical parameter count of the masks. These findings contribute to 1) designing a TSE system, 2) improving scaling accuracy through mask-based scaling, and 3) estimating the extraction performance of a BF. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

An analytic equation for single cell electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with a dependence on cell position

An analytic equation for electrochemical impedance of a single-cell measured with a microelectrode is presented. A previously reported equation had a practical problem that it is valid only when the microelectrode resides at the center of the cell under test. In this work, we propose a new analytic equation incorporating dependence on cell position, and confirmed its effectiveness by numerical simulation. Comparisons show that our proposed equation gives an excellent agreement with simulated impedance values. Discrepancies between results from our equation and numerical simulation is suppressed within 13%, which is a dramatic reduction from the previously-reported equation as large as 58%. The proposed analytic equation is expected to enable more accurate analysis in actual cell experiments. © 2023, CC BY.

Lung health is crucial to human well-being, with lung diseases exhibiting high incidence and mortality rates worldwide. Accurate segmentation of lung airways is vital for diagnosis, especially highlighted by the recent coronavirus pandemic. Despite extensive research, challenges persist due to the complex structure of lung airways. This study proposes a novel dual-encoder network combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformer networks for precise lung airway segmentation. Evaluations on a private dataset from Shandong University and the public LIDC-IDRI dataset demonstrate superior performance over existing methods. We also introduce a system utilizing Microsoft HoloLens 2 for 3D holographic visualization of lung airways, enhancing medical diagnostics and education. This user-centric pipeline offers immersive, interactive, and collaborative experiences for medical professionals. In summary, this study presents an advanced segmentation network and demonstrates the integration of Mixed Reality and deep learning in medical applications, potentially improving lung disease diagnosis and treatment.

The rise of virtual education and increase in distance, partly owing to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, has made it more difficult for teachers to determine each student’s learning status. In this situation, knowledge tracing (KT), which tracks a student’s mastery of specific knowledge concepts, is receiving increasing attention. KT utilizes a sequence of studentexercise interactive activities to predict the mastery of concepts corresponding to a target problem, recommending appropriate learning resources to students and optimizing learning sequences for adaptive learning. With the development of deep learning, various studies have been proposed, such as sequential models using recurrent neural networks, attention models influenced by transformers, and graph-based models that depict the relationships between knowledge concepts. However, they all have common limitations in that they cannot utilize the learning activities of students other than the target student and can only use a limited form of exercise information. In this study, we have applied the concept of rating prediction to the studentexercise knowledge tracing problem and solved the limitations of the existing models. Our proposed Inductive Graph-based Knowledge Tracing (IGKT) designed to integrate structural information and various unrestricted types of additional information into the model through subgraph sampling, has been found superior over the existing models across two different datasets in predicting student performances.

This paper investigates the anomaly-resistant decentralized state estimation(SE) problem for a class of wide-area power systems which are divided into several non-overlapping areas connected through transmission lines. Two classes of measurements(i.e., local measurements and edge measurements) are obtained, respectively, from the individual area and the transmission lines. A decentralized state estimator, whose performance is resistant against measurement with anomalies, is designed based on the minimum error entropy with fiducial points(MEEF) criterion. Specifically, 1) An augmented model, which incorporates the local prediction and local measurement, is developed by resorting to the unscented transformation approach and the statistical linearization approach;2) Using the augmented model, an MEEF-based cost function is designed that reflects the local prediction errors of the state and the measurement;and 3) The local estimate is first obtained by minimizing the MEEF-based cost function through a fixed-point iteration and then updated by using the edge measuring information. Finally, simulation experiments with three scenarios are carried out on the IEEE 14-bus system to illustrate the validity of the proposed anomaly-resistant decentralized SE scheme.

For a class of uncertain large-scale interconnected systems, a design method of decentralized variable gain robust controllers with guaranteed { mathcal{L}-{control}} gain performance based on piecewise Lyapunov functions is shown in this paper. Furthermore, LMI-based sufficient conditions for the existence of the proposed decentralized variable gain robust controller are shown.
